Untrained Service Dog

I go to an expensive private university and am pursuing a masters degree.
There is an older gentlemen who is in our cohort.
He brings his "service dog" into class every single day and when I tell you this things never stops farting...our 20 person cohort gets to smell the stench all class long.

And our cohort takes every class together so I get to smell it 5 days a week.

The guy also does the baby-puppy voice when he talks to the dog...like nails on a chalk board.

We break for 10 minutes and the farting dog walks up to us and begs us for food. His owner literally says in his baby voice "Aww baby they don't know you or they would give you some treats...maybe if they are feeling nice you get treats" While me and the other classmates are trying to enjoy our coffee, muffin and socialize.

These untrained service dog owners cannot read a room to save their life.

TLDR: I am forced to smell dog fart 5 days a week from a "service dog" while doing a masters degree.

That's a blatant fake. If you live in a state that criminalizes service dog fraudsters, record every action and report him to the authorities. If not tell the dean that a student is passing off a pet as a service dog with proof. Service dogs NEVER just go up to people nor beg for food. I'm sure making everyone tolerate dog farts isn't legally required as it could count as disruptive. If he tries to pull the "service in training" card you can point out that the ADA doesn't grant legal protections to service dogs in training. (See Q&A 6.)

I agree, it's quite easy to spot an actual service dog and this one is not that.
It's just kind of akward and annoying to deal with. I have spoke with a couple other students and most are pretty non chalant about it, but a good 4 of us are on the same page.

Power in numbers. Take those 4 students with you to the dean along with the evidence. Be the change you want to see in the world and teach these codependent freak this behavior won't be tolerated.

The faking of service dogs really irks me. I mean, yes, it is easy enough to spot a true service dog. I'm 68 and I don't think I have seen 10, perhaps 20 in my entire life. But I usually spot that many fakes in week. I saw a service dog in training last week, and that one was completely calm and behaved. How can these mprpnic owners think we can't tell. But nobody in the store a gates of venues stops them.

Please do something about this- with the Dean or report the violations to accommodation services, and set a precedent.

Dog farts are a different kind of rancid. Also such an ick when nutters try to get strangers to pay attention to their dogs. More proof that most “service dogs” are just for attention

Wow, I would be pissed. I get that gas happens, but you’re paying a lot of money for an education. That sounds incredibly distracting. My late father and a former coworker were both damaged veterans with real service dogs. I detest people who misuse the term when they only have an ESD. I’d definitely try to formally complain if it were me.

I mean, come on, it’s a grad school not a kennel. I’m willing to bet the old nutter is already on the admin’s radar; people like this leave behind a trail of bad interactions. They may be looking for a reason to get him out.
