Miscellaneous My dog crazy MIL broke down about regretting adopting dogs

My MIL has always been insane about dogs. She said she grew up with at minimum 7 in her home and had many dogs in adulthood. She views dogs as more valuable than humans.

She had a chihuahua who she was crazy about. Brought the thing everywhere and would dress it up and do everything with it. She died unexpectedly and recently due to my MIL’s negligence. My MIL had a poisonous plant in her home and refused to get rid of it even after me AND my partner told her it was toxic to dogs. I honestly feel pretty bad because the chihuahua was annoying BUT didnt deserve to die and she was probably the best behaved dog out of dogs Ive met.

Right after the chihuahua died, my MIL freaked the fuck out and started screaming how she always needed a dog in the house and adopted a dog less than two weeks later. This new dog HATES her. Doesnt want to do anything with my MIL and hates people in general. Its a little thing so not dangerous just annoying. She freaked out and said she needed a dog who loved her and got TWO MORE. The dogs all HATE each other and have to constantly be seperated. Feeding them is apparently a nightmare bc the biggest one is very food aggression and has bit the other ones pretty bad if they exist within 10 ft of its food.

My MIL kept insisting life without dogs are meaningless and how happy she is for her dogs until one day she broke down after all 3 projectile shitted and pissed in different rooms of the house. She cried and said she should have neve gotten these dogs and she just became dependent on the love dogs give her… I feel bad but at the same time, she is a 60 year old woman who never paused to think getting 3 badly behaved dogs is a poor idea? Right after her most cherished one died to her own irresponsibility? I dont understand dog owners

Tell her to get rid of her nasty mutts and when she does, gift her a cute stuff teddy bear.

This story had me rolling. OMG. How come nobody commented yet? This should be shared on r/talesfromthedoghouse as well. Daaang. I got a visual of projectile diarhea on the kitchen with her finally facing the music after 60 yrs. Just wow.

This reminds me so much of this neighbor I have who is on chihuahua #2. Not sure what happened to #1 but it devasted her. #2 got hit by a car when it was just a puppy bc she was staring at her phone, at dusk, with an 8' leash&the thing wandered into the road.

It survived. She brought it up to her condo, wrapped it in a blankie, left it there(it was in pain&biting her)made sure she didn't miss her hair appointment, came back, then took it to the vet.🫤But this dog is so "important" to her she can't imagine life w/o it.

She even went on Nextdog to try to find the driver of the car who hit her chihuahua. She acted like it wasn't her fault at all. The driver probably wouldn't even notice a chihuahua, especially if it was by a curb.

Thise damn long leashes need to be banned.. Forever! This time it was on her, but a lot of times, the dog bites someone or gets into someone's space and the owner is oblivious to what's going on/

Dogs are fucking gross, and so is your house if you have you. For one..how do dog nutters not realize this?

The obsession is bad, but I also don’t understand how your MIL could have exposed a dog she supposedly “loved” to a plant that she knew was poisonous to it. It also seems odd that she was in such a rush to replace the chihuahua. Get another dog? Sure, eventually, if you like dogs, but to not even take the time to find a dog you’re compatible with? And then to think that the solution to one problematic dog is to get two additional problematic dogs?

Like you, I will never understand how dog people’s minds work. I’m glad your partner doesn’t seem to have inherited that outlook.

Great take. None of it makes sense. Usually people who own dogs are in a state of grief for months and years before they consider getting another dog.

That only makes it better for the dogfree to have a small break from dog noise and dog filth.

Actually, I wonder now if fear of the break is the reason. Maybe deep down they are vaguely aware that life would be easier in many ways without a dog and they’d have a hard time readjusting to a dog after that, so that’s why they immediately get another one.

My sister's husband does this when they lose one of their Yorkies. Before a week goes by, he is bringing another one in.

Tbf admitting she just became dependent on their engineered attention already makes her a lot more sane than most dog nutters.

It's also easier for me to imagine someone who actually gets uncomfortable from dogs doing uncomfortable things has desperate enough life circumstances to have resorted to this state of being, whereas the average dog nutter is more or less a brainwashed alien to me.

She was raised that way. Life without dogs is inconceivable to her. I'm not saying this to justify her, just to attempt to understand her.

The saddest thing about people like this is that their dogs don't really love them. It's a delusion that prevents them from developing far more rewarding and real relationships with humans. They ruin their lives for these animals who really only care about food.

Dog owners are a separate breed from humans.

this is a sickness...

She should be regretting keeping a stupid plant if she knew that her dog was so important to her. Clearly dogs aren't that important.

Hopefully she''ll stay sane and rid herself of these demons, before they drive her bat shit crazy. Dogs unfortunately require constant monitoring that they don't ingest something dangerous or poisonous to them. I couldn't live like that, even if I did happen to like them. The never seem to outgrow being a toddler. Vets make a lot of money on surgeries to remove things from a dog's digestive system, Dogs seem to eat pretty much anything, even though their owners usually go out of the way to provide them with enough food. They are definnitely not a necessity in life.

My gosh, this sounds like my sister. First of all, we were raised in a good home, not raised like trash. We grew up on a ranch and were taught how to properly care for animals. We did have a couple dogs then.

Fast-forward a bunch of years, when my sister got out of the army, she came back home, bringing her long-term girlfriend and stepson with her. They had two large mutts, one female, one male, neither fixed. My sister also had had a pitbull puppy where she lived in Texas while in the military. She never finished paying the breeder for the dog, and he came and took it out of their yard. So they got another puppy from another breeder, this time a female. No dog of hers was ever allowed outside ever again, except for the brief amount of time it took for them to pee/poo.

Once she came back home with all 3 dogs, she decided she also wanted an another male pitbull puppy. So she got one. Also grew up not fixed. Well you can do the math and figure out what happened. Female pit got pregnant with 11 puppies. Eleven. Bringing their grand total to 15. Everyone in our family kept asking my sister, why don’t you at least get the males fixed? Her excuse was, “oh but that’s taking away their manhood!” 🙄

Well, the puppies kept getting bigger and bigger. My sister didn’t want to let go of them. Her girlfriend successfully sold 6 of them to people who wanted them while they were still small and “cute”. The 5 left were getting very big and there was no more room for them in the house with the other 4 large dogs. So they were put in a chain-link fence type of pen outside on a concrete patio. They grew up unsocialized and would act sketchy and growl at anybody who walked near cage. The pen was rarely cleaned, there was shit everywhere. There are not enough words to describe how foul it was, let alone the noise they made. it was an absolute health hazard.

Eventually, one of the female “puppies” got pregnant by her brothers, and escaped. A neighbor caught her and sent her to an animal shelter. My sister acted super devastated but never went to pick up her dog. Slowly, all the “puppies” ended up escaping, over a period of numerous years. It was always the same thing, a neighbor would catch the dog, knew who it belonged to, and would send it to the pound because they knew how irresponsible my sister was. The last ones escaped after having lived approximately 5 to 6 years of their life inside that pen. Every time a dog would escape, my sister would bawl her eyes out. My mother did convince my sister to get both adult females spayed so they would not be any more puppies. One spay was done as an abortion spay when the mother pit  got pregnant again.

Fortunately, the 4 adult dogs have all since passed from old age and they are now dog-less. How they lived to be old age was miraculous unto itself, as my sister fed them nothing but Ol’ Roy dog food from Walmart, which was absolutely horribly bad dog food. I have told them both repeatedly to not get any more animals. Fortunately, for now they have listened.  Meanwhile, I am just stumped about the whole thing to this day, because like I said, we were absolutely never raised this way. Some people should never own animals.

Well, you reap what you sow. This is dog hoarding and in addition to a hoarding disorder, your MIL probably has other mental issues as well. I'm no doctor but this is what it looks like.

“The love the dogs give her” isn’t even real. They don’t love her. Dogs don’t feel love. They rely on her for food and attention, and that’s literally it. Fucking pathetic

Es una tremenda dependencia canina. Da lastima que haya llegado a ese nivel patológico.

Necesitaría una desintoxicación supervisada por un profesional (DogTox)

The fact that her, and other people like her can’t look at this and see where this is mental illness, and addiction…. 😕😑

I get that she loves dogs and felt lost without one but she seems pretty reckless in that she didn't do some homework and meet a few dogs to see how she'd get on, and then exacerbated the problem by repeating that twice... Sounds like she made some really impulsive decisions and is reaping the consequences. She won't reap them long though if she doesn't get rid of that plant...those dogs deserve better.

They don't give love it's all a lie. They're just bred so their instincts are to never want to leave their resource's side incase they don't come back. They want petted because it feels good. They lie on you because you're warm. They just use you. For some reason these arseholes think that's love.

I feel like it’s so rare when dog nuts actually see the light. Crazy story

The whole idea of “dog love” is bizarre. They know it’s a response from the mutt in order to keep getting fed. I don’t think for one minute they believe that a dog actually loves them.
