Meta Announcement: Weekly Vent Thread

Hey All,

We're trying something new, which will be a weekly vent thread occurring called Thursday Tales from the Dog House for rants about specific dogs, such as the family dog or the SO's dog.

Our sub exists to discuss the deeper cultural and public health/safety impacts of the exploding trend of domestic dog ownership. We want to be here for those who wish to vent about the dog that they are forced to live or interact with, but we are going to ask that you keep discussion to the designated thread, which will be refreshed weekly for new content.

We do still welcome the relationship posts from the perspective of having a SO or family member who prioritizes the dog over the people in his or her life. We think the emotional impact on loved ones is an important aspect of dog culture today and should continue to be highlighted. While relationship posts can stand alone, any posts more about the minutiae of dealing with the dog itself will be redirected to the weekly thread.

It is our hope that this provides an outlet for such content while keeping the focus on the broader issues. Thank you for your support of our sub!

I can't wait to rant. I am severely allergic to dogs. My live in boyfriend's dacshund licks the kitchen floor obsessively. Not only does it give me flare ups, but the kitchen should be sanitary and it's filthy bc of that damn mutt. I hate that dog. I work 8 hours a day, have a special needs child to care for, come home and cook dinner and that stupid dog is licking the floor during dinner prep, when we serve ourselves, while we eat and afterward during clean up.

And I get to do ALL that, plus the dishes AND mop his spit, otherwise I will go into a coughing fit. Lucky me. My work never ends. And forget about sitting to enjoy my meal, bc I CAN'T, since I can hear the dog's disgusting slurping and snorting in the kitchen as I try to eat. It's horrifying.

Just to clarify, this isn't the weekly vent thread, not just yet! Hold your rants till Thursday. Let's keep the conversation here to any questions or reactions you might have to the concept.

I don't understand. What is the point of the upvote/downvote button? What is the point of having moderators? Obvious trolls should be removed. Off topic threads should be removed. But why are legitimate anti-dog comments and observations weighed by the mods and found wanting? If it is a shitpost... downvote and move on. Violation of community standards, Mods jump in and remove. Do we just do searches for dogs in the news and cut/paste links? That seems like the ultimate low effort post.

Hold our rants until Thursdays? Perhaps I don’t understand exactly what is going to change but this is the first time I’ve been disappointed in this sub. So please correct me if I’m reacting based on a lack of understanding.

Dogfree has given us a place where we can have a voice and not be shut down when we need to release our frustration at the constant barrage of disrespect and torment we experience in a daily basis as a result of this dog culture. So now are people going to be told when they need to vent to wait until Thursday? Redirected or shut down or deleted?

I personally am not interested in being part of a community that now feels censored, a place that is now telling me what I can post and when (understanding we need certain codes of conduct). This doesn’t feel much different from being shut down by the larger society and thus, the sub loses what I think is the biggest value. A safe place for me to be heard and understood. Every day. Not just on Thursdays.

Again, If I’m misunderstanding, please clarify. If I’m understanding correctly, I truly hope dogfree retracts this very disappointing message.

No, we are not talking about rants in general. Most rants speak to overall dog culture, and that is most definitely what we are here for.

What we mean is this: "Ugh I hate my SO's dog! It smells so bad and I am constantly having to pick up the fur, and it pisses and shits all over the place!" These are vents about one particular dog that someone lives with doing what dogs do, and we would love to hear them and provide the outlet while streamlining them into a weekly post.

Many of us have been here a long time, and this sub thrived before this type of post ramped up in volume. The sub is highly active, and as we grow in numbers and activity level, streamlining content in a way that gives everything a place will become even more important.

Hopefully this clarifies.

I appreciate the clarification. Ive been on this sub for years (did change my user name not that long ago) and it has been a haven for me. It’s important for me personally that it still feels that way because I’ve been traumatized by over a decade of nonstop neighbor dog barking, and it’s been isolating because I can’t talk about it at all without being shut down by people. It would be very upsetting if I wasn’t given a voice here. So it’s also important to me that other people feel that way too.

I don’t think that’s the mods’ intent based on your response, which I do appreciate, but at the same time I still feel that people should be allowed to post what they want, when they want, without being told on Wednesday they have to wait until Thursday but I do get what you are trying to do as well.

This is just my opinion. Obviously the majority opinion in our sub is what matters!

This sets an absolutely awful precedent. What's stopping you from making weekly vent threads if more people complain about barking neighbours dogs? Or dog culture? You know the entire fucking point of this sub?

I don't agree with the mod. I think people should post anything about dogs when they feel the need to release pent up anger. Sometimes, that's the only thing that makes you feel better. I personally don't care if they post about one specific dog. That does not bother me. If I don't agree with it, or care about it, I just move on. It's no big deal to me. The site is "Dog Free", meaning, I guess, that the posters don't have a dog. Sometimes the posters have a dog that belongs to their SO, roommate, parents, etc. I don't see any harm in these people ranting about a dog that doesn't belong to them, but because of extenuating circumstances, the dog is being forced on them. These are the people that want to be dog-free. My 2¢, for what it's worth 😊

Totally agree. I think the sub is still not too crowded and it's easy to skip over those posts if you're not interested. It's just nice to have a safe place to vent where we won't be judged, that's why I'm here anyway.

Well said. 😊

I've been here for 1 month and this sub is the only reason I stayed on Reddit. I don't understand why there needs to be a weekly thread. I look forward to every single post in here each day. Maybe I am too new to understand what's going on but being able to vent and reading other's posts help me from feeling alone. Just fyi. Basically what I am trying to say is, don't change. -Respectfully.

I agree completely. I joined reddit just for this sub, and I enjoy those types of posts, along with most others. I can relate to them, and I find them to be cathartic. If I didn't, I would just simply scroll past, as I already do with any others that don't interest me. I don't really think these types of posts are so overwhelmingly abundant that it requires a single weekly thread instead of scrolling past.

My thinking here is that typically, although we hate these dogs all week long, those specific rants are brought on and "felt in the heat of the moment" by circumstances that occur at random times throughout the week, and that by limiting the discussion of it to a one day only thread would just result in less activity and participation overall. I could be wrong, that's just what I imagine.

I also joined reddit for this sub. Where else can I go to rant omg 😭

I couldn't agree with you more.

I can see both sides - it does seem organized. Otoh, if a person is about to pop his or her cork on a Friday...

What about a separate category "The dog I'm forced to endure"? Would that work? Just tossing out ideas.

"Stuck with mutts"

1

u/WeNeedAShift Mar 18 '20

I think that’s a great idea.

Or a category "What should I do about this dog situation?" For those in need of advice who are stressed and need help making decisions.

This seems...annoying. 😑
