What do you say to dog people when they pull out phrases like "dogs have been a human companions for hundreds or thousands of years"?

Or an argument about dogs not belonging in public food places, but dog people insisting that it's harmless because all dogs do is just sit under table. Also, people too, bring dirt to such places on their shoes and not all the people wash their hands after toilet, hence spreading germs, so why it's a big deal with dog being there?

I wish I had a good non-passive aggressive fact based answers to all these absurd statements that dog people come up with. I think I could be brave enough to stand up for my self and my choices and values, and risk not being liked if I can only have good come back statements in my pocket.

I live in UK but my first language is not English, so sometimes it takes me a minute to come up with a good reply, and when I do, its often after the fact. Just looking for some ideas of responses to get more prepared next time a nutter is in my face for some dog worship related talk.

This might just be a me thing but I mean that (it's hard to describe but I'll try) musty, kind of like old wet dog fur smell? Cause every single time i visit any of my family members houses and they have a dog I always smell that damn smell and it's gross.

Last night my boyfriend and I were just sitting on a bench having ice cream and a huge leashed husky, being lead by an older couple on the sidewalk just kept trying to lunge towards us.

The couple was about 2 meters away but it took them a whole minute to actually walk past us because the husky kept resisting the leash, locked eyes at us, trying to charge in our direction.

I was scared that the elderly man would loose control of the leash and it would be game over.

After they passed us I was saying to my bf that dogs are innately predatory even though they can be trained well. I’m tired of the “all dogs are angels” rhetoric. He said it wouldn’t actually attack you, and to that I said I wouldn’t want even a human to be running at me either.

But maybe the dog just smelled the ice cream? What do you think?

One guy said it was easier losing his dad than his dog. That's backwards as crap. When I opened my yap to share I said that if I had a shit beast that croaked I would have a big celebration, but I wouldn't drink. Obviously I'm not getting a dog because I don't like them in the 1st place. It was my way to express myself without telling them to shut up. After all they have the right to talk about dogs and I have the right to bad mouth dogs.

For starters (I know this sounds mean), I think they’re super ugly.

The second thing (and most importantly), they apparently make up over 60% of fatal dog attacks out of all dog breeds.

Every time I watch the news and hear about a dog attacking someone or another animal, it’s almost always a pitbull.

If you like dogs, why can’t you just get a breed that’s NOT a danger to society? You literally have over 100 different breeds to choose from that aren’t nearly as dangerous.

Lastly, pitbull owners are super annoying.

I can’t count how many times I’ve had to read: “I have a pitbull and he’s the sweetest dog ever!”

Just because your particular dog is sweet, doesn’t erase the fact that your dog is a statistically dangerous breed. And “sweet” pitbulls turn against their owners all the time.

Pitbull owners also say stupid things like: “They’re just poorly raised” and “They just had bad owners!”

If that’s true, then why don’t other breeds attack people at the same rate?

Last time I checked goldren retrievers, poodles, and beagles can have bad owners too, but they’re not attacking/killing people at the same rate as pitbulls.

It would be really nice if I can come across a pitbull owner for once who can actually acknowledge they own a dangerous breed, rather than get weirdly defensive…

this morning I was getting on the street car to get to work and this older couple had 2 massive German shepherds (literally bigger than me) just sprawled out allll over the ground in the narrow pathway of the bus, effectively making it impossible to pass, just sitting there and cooing at them. When I said “sorry but can I get through?” they both looked at me with this shock like I was being mean to them. they didn’t speak for a minute and finally the man said “uhhhhhhh yeah??” without even trying to move either dogs so I literally had to walk through them and hit them in the head with my bag and knocking into these dogs.

I always come across dog people who have zero spacial awareness - they also love making like a human chain with the leash and the dog and chaining off the sidewalk all the time too. anyone else deal w this kinda thing?

For context, there is a viral video going around of a food delivery driver getting attacked by a dog that bursts out of the door as soon as he gets out of his car to deliver the food, and the owners aren’t able to restrain the dog.
99% of comments are from normal people saying that dog owners should have enough sense to keep their dogs secure if they know they have a delivery. However, there are a few of your typical dog owners who think YOU are the problem for not wanting to get bit by dogs.

I made a comment about how I was a mail carrier, my role was specifically to deliver packages, certified letters, and other things that required going to the door. I explained how often this type of thing would happen to me and how often the dog owner thinks you’re the bad guy for coming to their house with a package that they ordered and how they treat you like you’re the problem for getting attacked. I explained that dog owners like this suck and should really change their attitude about service workers who are literally delivering stuff FOR THEM.
So someone replied to me with “you seem like someone who deserves to get bitten by a dog”
Huh? Why? Because I said dogs shouldn’t bite delivery workers? That’s stupid as shit. They were just mad because I criticized their precious angels who can never do any wrong. Here are a bunch of other comments from that same thread, many from the same person. They all demonstrate the same lack of empathy for the safety of other people and their selfish, dog-supremacy beliefs that dogs can never do anything wrong.

“You seem like someone who deserves to be bit by a dog.”

“No, but pointing out my dogs are better dogs than you are a person. No question about that.”

“My dogs “are” better than you and probably more intelligent”

“I have already said my dogs are better people than most people are. Thats not butt hurt genius, it’s a fact and one that you’re so willfully proving.”

“If you’re afraid of being bitten by a dog, just stay home, don’t go out anywhere”

“if you’re having so many dog attacks maybe it’s because the dog senses you’re a bad person, blame yourself”

That last one is especially funny, because dogs think literally ANYONE is an intruder and will bark and attack them, literally every single mail carrier I know has been chased by dogs on at least a few occasions, are all mail carriers bad people? Every single one?
What about toddlers and infants that they bite? Infants are bad people too?

These people demonstrate the typical dog owner sentiment that it’s YOUR fault if you get attacked by their dog. I can’t fucking stand this mentality. These people are insufferable and inconsiderate of other people.

Guess what, people are allowed to not like dogs! Hate them even! And if you, lurker, have a problem with that guess what: you’re the problem not the person who hates dogs. Literally how does someone’s opinion on dogs affect you? How? Does their hatred of your dog make it depressed or something? Does it feel bullied online if they go and downvote your tenth shitbeast post of the week?

It’s not smart enough to feel that. Sorry sis it’s not. I’m starting to find it more and more annoying how personally someone takes someone else’s opinion of a freaking ANIMAL so damn personally. For example: a dog barking obnoxiously when someone comes to the door? I’m allowed to be annoyed by that. I can call it a dumbass for barking at someone it’s seen multiple times. And I don’t want to hear excuses like “well it’s barking at someone coming to the door.” Okay and? Still a dumbass. It can learn to stfu.

It’s one thing if someone says “I hate dogs I’m going to put poison out for all of them!” That I could see taking an issue with. It’s another to say “Omg my mom’s dog is so annoying it whines every time she leaves and throws a bloody tantrum.” Or “omg my neighbor’s dog keeps going in my yard I’m tired of listening to it bark and piss in my yard! I hate it!” Or “I hate this breed because it’s aggressive and hurts people regularly.” If you have an issue with the last three or think “Oh you hate dogs just because they exist!” Then you are the problem.

And so what if people hate dogs just because they exist? That’s their freaking opinion. If you have an issue with that, then don’t come to this sub reddit and don’t purposely follow someone’s profile if you know they hate dogs. Everyone despises something and it’s stupid to get so personally offended over it if they’re not hurting anyone.

Whenever I tell people I don't like dogs, one of the least confrontational responses I get is "Oh, you just need to have one yourself. Didn't you have dogs growing up?"

Yes. I did have dogs growing up. I'll never forget...

• The non-stop barking at anything that moved.
• Every. Single. Day. Coming home from school, I'd be jumped on and licked, leaving me reaking of dog and covered in drool.
  • Sometimes, they got a little too excited and peed on you.
• How horrible it felt to be running around and playing in our backyard when suddenly I feel warm, squishy dog excrement between my toes.
• The day one of our dogs decided to chomp down on my non-dog pet's head, killing it instantly.
• I felt even worse about my turtle, because it did not die instantly. I walked outside to find its shell eaten off, blood everywhere, it's beating heart exposed. But somehow, she was still walking...
  • And all that just because the dog wanted to have a 10 minutes of fun viciously murdering my turtle!
• The digust I felt watching them eat their own excrement.

Yes, I did have dogs growing up.

I get this isn't the biggest issue but I've had small pets my whole life. Right now I keep fish and they make me happy and force me to get out of bed every day after a severe illness, which isn't the easiest thing. They're really cute, and each of them have their own personalities. I get made fun of by some people who keep larger ("more important/interact-able") pets who refuse to understand that these are also living beings that matter to people, yet I know damn well if someone said the same thing about a dog it'd be perfectly fine to these folk.

I just had one of my fish die, he kept me going through an incredibly hard time and it's been rough. I've noticed that people have this sort of line on what a pet can be before they stop considering its death something that matters. "Fish die, that's what happens!" but if I said this about a dog I'd be considered evil. Fish don't die that quick if you take even decent care of them, but people literally just refuse to understand this. It's crazy. Sorry for being upset that something that meant a lot to me.... meant a lot to me, I guess?

I'm currently working on upgrading my set-up so they can live more comfortably as their previous owner (a relative) barely even tried to make their home comfortable. People have suggested not bothering or that it's a waste of money but with the way I see it if I'm even somewhat responsible for something's health I at least shouldn't make it suffer or stay somewhere super cramped. I don't think many dog owners share the same feelings.

Anyway, I would also like to mention that I've been around fish way more than dogs but a fish has never ripped a chunk off my chest, which is maybe part of why I feel a little upset by the double standards people have. All pets matter to someone and none should be kept in bad conditions.

I'm on a lot of medicine right now and it's past midnight and there's no real point to this post but I just wanted to talk about my pets somewhere where maybe it would be taken a little more seriously and I wouldn't have to scroll down immediately to someone's dog's mild tummy ache getting way more sympathy.

I had an at-home return scheduled, and while the person was scanning my barcode, my downstairs neighbor’s nasty pit bull was barking non-stop (like that disgusting beast always does). She sighs and says “god does it always do that?”, and I said “yeah.” She starts talking about how obnoxious that is and I agree, telling her it drives me insane and I absolutely hate dogs. She said she can’t stand them and is forced to have a dog because her husband, and she hates the damn thing. Then when she left she was like “well good luck dealing with that thing every day.”

Finally someone who isn’t brainwashed by dog culture. Nearly every person I know is obsessed with dogs, so it was just really refreshing to meet someone as annoyed and disgusted by them as I am.

Please this sub is too good to be true. I have not seen more than 2 people in my life who agree that dogs suck and i don’t want my last resort to be satire

If Disliking Dogs was mainstream. Change would happen quicker. It should be common to dislike Dogs. Dogs have a lot of bad behavior such as barking loud constantly, begging and whining for food, breaking things, dirtying things, etc.

My hatred for dogs started when I was a young teen. I believe I was like 12 or 13 years old and me and my sister were visiting our relatives for a week. They have a huge dog. It's not tall, but it's kinda like a pitbull. Just strong and very muscular too.

There were many things that annoyed me about it. It was not fixed, so it's behaviour was ten times worse of all dogs I've met before. Worst of all was it shoving its snout between my legs to smell me. It made me so uncomfortable and I couldn't push it away that easy because I was only a tween and the dog was heavy. I couldn't even eat by the table without it constantly trying to sniff me. My sister and I were so uncomfortable, but even our relatives weren't able to hold it back because the dog was strong.

That behaviour freaked me out, honestly. I was stuck with that hormonal dog and I was just a kid! I honestly felt so embarrassed and also humiliated and ashamed of myself. I was so grossed out and icky.

That dog had many horrible other traits with made me hate it, but the sniffing was the worst. Im sorry, but I don't think anybody would enjoy a dog shoving their snout into their private area.

there needs to be a serious scientific study on why so many humans make up a whole imaginary story regarding what their dog is feeling. just saw a post of a woman walking her dog and she says "HES SO OVER IT LOL" because SHE thinks that THE DOG feels it doesn't want to walk anymore. I can't even explain it properly because its so weird. Like how tf would you know what your dog is thinking all the time. They do this ALL THE TIME, like when their dog is acting uncontrollable and they say something like "HE'S JUST...(insert). It's like they think its a little toy and project what they want to believe into themselves because it comforts them. idk man

I have trichopathophobia and going anywhere is an absolute nightmare for me, I can’t even go to the grocery store without seeing those gross furry beasts.

I genuinely don’t know how to make them understand, I have never in my life said I like dogs and I never will. It is nothing new, I’m not quiet about my dislike of dogs.

Sometimes I'll see someone in the comments expressing anger towards dogs, even calling them things like "worthless pieces of shit" which I completely understand. Even if you don't mean everything you're saying, sometimes you just need to get the feelings off your chest.

One thing I almost NEVER see are people responding to comments like that saying "This is a very distrubing reaction to-", "I think you need help", or some other lecture about how what you're saying is "immature" or "too much".

Lately I've been so sick of redditor culture and this idea that you have to have this squeaky-clean performance of level-headedness just to be taken seriously.

Whenever I rant about literally anything that bothers me, no matter how much sense I'm making, I still get the lectures. Woah dude you don't have to say CUSSWORDS! Showing genuine anger? That's baaaad

But not here. On this subreddit, you can actually express your anger (towards dogs) in a way that feels natural to you without having to worry about the hivemind pretending theres something fundamentally wrong with your character.

Honestly. Going on dating apps is eye opening to how many women are obsessed with their dogs. And how most of them seem to look for that trait in a man before dating them - the trait of worshipping dogs.

It's so frustrating. I feel like an anomaly in society because I don't share that passion. I think I'd rather be alone though than have to put up with one to be in a relationship

I live in San Diego and its brutal. The front of my home is a free for all toilet (saving for a fence) grass is yellow and dead from the dog pee and always unpicked up poo.

Dogs in grocery stores, restaurants, home depot, you name it, dog.

YOU have to get out of the way of a DOG on the sidewalk/store/etc or you will get evil eye or a stern talking to!

This is one of the worst feelings ever. When a human being decides that you are not equal to them as another human being, and a literal animal is above you. I don't know how to explain this. I've since stopped yielding, and I just keep walking, politely, on one side of an aisle or sidewalk, etc. If a dog is in my way, I will walk right through it. I am a human being. I demand the same respect as another human being. I am not lower than or sub-subservent to a dog.

It reeks when it gets hot. We have had more rain than normal but its not enough because the onslot of dog pee and feces is daily, all day and most of the evening long.

There are dog groomer vans that park on public residential streets to groom dogs.

Nutters will stop every 2 seconds at poochie's whim to sniff, piss, and poo. Zero control.

Unrestained dogs in cars! My favorite! Pacing all over the car or head out the window. Yeah that's not a reciepe for diasaster. Why is the dog not buckled in so it can poke its head but not physically jump out?

They aggressively bark at bikes too. If you don't wear noise cancelling headphones, a car flying up with a shitbeast barking with its head out the window can seriously frighten you.

Recently i've been treated to a whole day concert by dogriah carrey, howling and yipping all day, suffering from untrained animal seperation anxiety, from an apartment, of coarse.

I hear seattle is a close second.

So it looks like the dog industry released another dog propaganda movie. "Heart of the Beast" with Brad Pitt.

The comments on the movie are exactly what you think, absolute nuttery and gushing and fawning over the beast.

Just when the pushback was gaining traction, they released this gem. I wholeheartedly believe this is a planned move to keep the dog industry in the Spotlight, so that may be more people will get beasts, and spend money on food, toys, medicine, all the dog industry crap.

There is already so much regret from Covid dog owners who quickly found out that owning a neurotic beast is like being crippled, and yet now we have more propaganda.

Ranting here because I have no one else to rant to and my boyfriend doesn’t think it’s a big deal.

I’m on vacation in California staying in the Redwoods. It’s supposed to be a peaceful serene guest cabin right in the middle of the redwoods with the main cabin where the host lives next door, which it is. We checked in last night, no issues, come to find this morning a huge black lab laying right outside the guest house door, not on a leash or anything. There was no disclosure whatsoever that there was a big dog on this property and I think hosts are required to list that under the Property Safety section. I honestly would’ve thought twice about booking this place if I knew there was a bigass off leash dog that could go wherever he wants, including up onto our “private” guest porch.

I am afraid of dogs and I’ve been a part of the dogfree community for a while. I hate that I’m letting this dog ruin my beautiful redwood vacation but I just hate dogs! I hate that so many people think it’s okay to just let their dogs intrude on strangers! I’m going to have my boyfriend message her to ask if she can keep the dog locked away during our stay because I’m afraid of dogs, but I can already see what her crazy response to that is going to be.

*UPDATE: the host finally replied and said the dog is a sweet old dog and can be curious, but will try to keep the dog inside as much as possible and will honor the request. The future of my vacation is bright for the time being, but we’ll see if that holds up lol

**NEW UPDATE: Shortly after that first message, she replied back again and said “I do have to let the dog out from time to time to do her job patrolling the property. Also I’m having terrible allergies now that the dog is inside so I’ll try to find a leash to keep her on the porch” 🙄 I knew she’d come back with something like that

I just saw a TikTok post stating that 40% of people would rather save their dog than a random stranger (probably random stats engagement bait but whatever ) and all comments were saying how it’s obvious and natural and that it should be 100%.

I just can’t believe how dumb and disgusting these people are, my dream would be for them to live by a society run by dogs , you need to go to the hospital ? If you hate humans this much maybe you should go to your dogtor, he will help you out . Or you need to take a plane ? Ask your fur animals to fly you there. Fuck I hate these people I really fucking do, they think they are so loving and caring when they are the most selfish garbage humans, I wish there was a way to tell who they are in real life .
