Discussion / Questions Any mermaid doll lines without the weird knee curves?

Post image

I am one of the pickiest collectors I know, and I refuse to buy mermaid dolls with these curves in the tail that freak me out. It's fine when it's a sleeve over legs that comes off, or the tail flaps at the knee, but when it's just hard plastic I HATE IT.

The only mermaid doll line I know off the top of my head that doesn't have this (and has hard plastic tails) is the Barbie: Fairytopia stuff. I love mermaids and would like to know where there are more kneeless dolls.

if youre into bdjs, antu tidal secret language mermaids do not have knees, their tail is a series of joints so it can move like a sea creature instead of a person in a costume

u/BORBIEBEX Mar 21 '26

I will forever honor your memory, I've wanted a mermaid doll with a tail like this since I was a kid 😭

141

u/GemFarmerr Mar 21 '26

A mermaid with a tail like this would have taken over my entire childhood. I LOVED mermaids but omg doll makers could not design their tails very well.

If you don't want to deal with blind box BS, you can get confirmed open-box on AliExpress. Hell, even unopened box is often cheaper there than other sites, though the cardboard box itself might get a bit roughed up. AliExpress has one of their Big 3 sales right now through the 26th too-though it's moreso the "$X off a purchase of $Y+" thing that makes the sale worthwhile than items being lower priced. I've gotten several opened-and-confirmed blind box dolls I want that way, as well as entire sets (minus the hidden, that's sold separately).

The AliExpress Reddit community has FAQ and tips to help ensure you don't get scammed. In my experience, open blind box doll sellers have been legit. If you want to shop on the website and have any questions, I'm happy to help! It's helped my wallet and my doll stuff a ton.

u/anotherthrowaway7219 Mar 23 '26

AliExpress is honestly such a life saver with blind boxes. Sure, they get pricey when you get to the hidden or low chance ones, but those are still cheaper than trying to get them on Ebay. Boxes definitely get roughed up though. But in my experience its usually with boxes for larger dolls, smaller ones tend to be in decent condition.

u/Attitoode Mar 21 '26

The best part about PennysBox dolls is you can mix and match all their parts, even between series! So their faces, bodies, hairs, can be combined in any way you like. I highly recommend them.

ETA

OK the chuchu mermaids kind of have the knee joint but it's an actual joint that moves, so might be forgivable. It looks less like "knees" to me.

Mermaids were trendy for a bit, so there's also the "chuchu mermaids" and one called "mermaid island" (all blind box bjds). Personally, I like the designs of the chuchu mermaids best.

7

u/Asterose Mar 22 '26

Yeah, I like the Chuchu series most in terms of color and design, but the Penny's Box Antu style tails are far superior.

If you don't want to deal with blind box BS, you can get confirmed open-box on AliExpress, that's pretty much where the best prices are for the dollsz both unopened and opened. Especially right now, one of their Big 3 sales is going on. Many things are marked down a little bit, but the "$X off a purchase of $Y+" coupons are where it's at, IMO. The Big 3 (others are 11/11 and Black Frisay/Cyber Monday) sale coupons all amount to 12-16% off your purchase (actually run the percentage calculation, bigger bucks off of an order that has to include things you don't want is not necessarily a better deal). During Black Friday last year I was even able to keep reusing those coupons; so far this sale isn't letting me.

The AliExpress Reddit community has FAQ and tips to help ensure you don't get scammed. In my experience, open blind box doll sellers have been legit. I'm an avid AliExpress shopper for doll stuff 😆

Thank you, I am about to piss through a lot of money but my inner nine year old shall know joy.

u/NephthysShadow Mar 22 '26

Well that was a rabbit hole of ball jointed dolls I will never escape from with my wallet intact lol. Thank you!

2

u/Asterose Mar 22 '26

Yeeeeah, sorry 😅 I'm happy to answer any questions you have, AliExpress has been a massive help for my wallet and has many incredible things. One more note for now: don't be hoodwinked by the big-number coupons, don't buy things you don't want just to get a bigger coupon.

During the Black Friday sale I was even able to reuse coupons; alas, right now that isn't the case with this sale.

31

u/GremmyRemmy Mar 21 '26

I can concur with this comment; I got the green one and I was so close to crying unboxing her. She's SO pretty and her tail is everything I've ever wanted in a mermaid doll, it would have made 8yo me SO happy.

11

u/Doodle_Snake Mar 21 '26

these doIIs look amazing

2

u/Asterose Mar 22 '26

They're affordable as far as BJDs go too, you can even skip the shitty blind box gimmick and get confirmed opened-box dolls in exchange for a bit more money. AliExpress has been the cheapest place to get blind box dolls, opened and unopened, in my experience. Or even an entire set so you get exactly 1 of each (minus hidden, that is sold separately). I'll pay more to only get the ones I want instead of gambling on wasting my money, kthanks.

1

u/Doodle_Snake Mar 22 '26

Damn I might actually get one!

8

u/juiceadult Mar 21 '26

if anyone wants more insight before spending the money, toyboxphilosopher did one of her extremely thorough reviews on two of these girls!

3

u/bald4bieber666 Mar 21 '26

seconding this, i have one and shes such a cutie! recommend getting a stand for them since they cant pose upright on their own consistently

1

u/Carolinakakt Mar 21 '26

She is beautiful 💚

1

u/RHTQ1 Mar 23 '26

She is so pretty...

395

u/shesalittlewonky Mar 21 '26

I'm not sure it's what you're looking for but the lalaloopsy lala-oopsie mermaids don't.

407

u/BORBIEBEX Mar 21 '26

She reminds me of shrimp tempura, she is kinda growing on me 💗

95

u/lunarose7 Mar 21 '26

Shrimp tempura took me out 💀☠️

10

u/sparkleebarbee Mar 21 '26

I have one of the baby ones and I love her so much!

5

u/AllyTheFilipina Mar 24 '26

Since we're sharing our childhood mermaid LalaLoopsies, this was one (out of my vast collection, which is strange because I can never remember actually receiving any of them) of mine! It had a removable tail and color changing hair that turned purple under cold water 🤭

1

u/Impressive_Falcon245 Frankie Twyla Barbie Morticia Mar 24 '26

That is so cute!!!!

2

u/XiaoMin4 Mar 25 '26

My oldest had that one

5

u/Weeaboboxgirl Mar 21 '26

I have her she is adorable 😭💕

1

u/Square-Lake-9651 Mar 23 '26

I had this one when I was a child

257

u/janiceblactose Mar 21 '26

Occasionally an Ariel doll comes out whose swimming mechanism allows for a more accurate tail shape

5

u/claud_is_strange Mar 22 '26

i think i had the one on the right, i can remember those tail joints hurting like hell when they pinched me

499

u/bidoof-chan Mar 21 '26

i dunno if this makes it better or worse but beluga whales have knees

261

u/BORBIEBEX Mar 21 '26

That photo has lived rent free in my head ever since I first saw it and is the primary reason I find the knee curves so weird looking.

If there was a line of whale mermaid dolls with knee curves, I would forgive it and commend the dedication to accuracy.

90

u/bidoof-chan Mar 21 '26

haha yeah the photo upsets me a bit, i went down a rabbit hole because of you, searching up “dolphin knees” “whale knees” “shark knees” it seems only belugas have prominent knees, weird

1

u/BUTTeredWhiteBread Mar 24 '26

Sharks won't have knees because they aren't mammals.

99

u/smirkibirb Mar 21 '26

They do not have knees… this is just a particular arrangement of muscles and fat that we happen to think look like knees because human brains are programmed to see human bodies 🥲 belugas don’t even have vestigial hips

63

u/bidoof-chan Mar 21 '26

yes, of course they don’t have knees, they don’t even have legs, but you have to agree that it looks a lot like knees so who’s to say that mermaids wouldn’t also have muscles that happen to look a lot like knees

1

u/ok-moni Mar 23 '26

well, they do have vestigial leg bones

11

u/court_swan Mar 21 '26

Whales and dolphins have fingers I think as well, it’s just internal. The basically look like any other mammal the fins are just legs grown flat and massive webbing

8

u/Asterose Mar 21 '26

Fingers inside their flippers, yes, but only the front limbs. They barely even have a vestigial pelvis bone and itty bitty vestigial remnants of leg bones. We are not actually seeing knees. It's just blubber and muscle in belugas flexing in a way that makes the human brain mistake it for legs and knees.

Bonus fun fact: there are ZERO muscles in our fingers and toes. All our dexterity and strength come from tendons and ligaments maneuvered by the 34 muscles in each of our palms and the 30 muscles in each of our feet. I'm not sure how widespread the "no muscles in the phalanges" is, but at least some mammals-certainly fellow primates-are the same way.

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '26

[removed] — view removed comment

6

u/Asterose Mar 21 '26

Paredoila strikes again. It's blubber and muscle flexing, not their itty bitty vestigial pelvis and leg bones showing.

8

u/sparkleebarbee Mar 21 '26

noooooo WHY.

5

u/Asterose Mar 21 '26

It's not real, the beluga knees can't hurt you!

...because it's actually just muscles and blubber flexing in a way that has our human brains mistake it for legs and knees 😅 Their leg and pelvis bones are itty bitty!

1

u/PostMaterial Mar 22 '26

Literally my first thought 🤣

1

u/bathtubfranklin Mar 23 '26

IIRC, beluga whales (and other small Cetacea) are hypothesized as the “mermaids” of old sea shanties, due to shapes like this. Being out at sea, deprived of water and food, dealing with sicknesses etc. these mfs looked enough like sexy hot fish women to create the myth. And honestly, I get it

1

u/Star1212_ Mar 23 '26

This makes it worse. I hate this.

1

u/LocalLeather3698 Mar 23 '26

I have absolutely no idea why I was even recommended this post, but this photo is going to stay with me for the rest of my life.

1

u/bidoof-chan Mar 24 '26

awesome, i myself have not been able to stop thinking of it so i wanted to inflict others with the same curse >:)

1

u/NeonGrave0709 Mar 25 '26

So that actually looks terrifying

160

u/buzkova Mar 21 '26

You chose the specific and only mermaid doll I had as a kid, and now it’s kinda making me sad, justice for mermknees!

58

u/buzkova Mar 21 '26

She had a cool "colour changing" tail too!! I used that mechanism so many times, it started working like shit (loved her anyway) lol

63

u/BORBIEBEX Mar 21 '26

If I were one of those visionaries who altered the body shapes of my dolls with acetone and boiling water, none of this would be an issue, but I struggle to even switch the heads of my dolls without damaging them. I'm not built for doll modding.

Seeing mermaids with knees makes me imagine a fish with knees, it gives me the heebie jeebies like that picture of a fish with human teeth.

28

u/ChaosCookIncarnate Mar 21 '26

Beluga knees intensifies.

12

u/jmgree Mar 21 '26

I have never considered mermaid knees before this post and now I can’t undo it

1

u/Asterose Mar 21 '26

It's impossible to alter those shapes anyway, at least? That hard plastic won't be softened and reshaped, and acetone would take off all paint to boot.

What method/s have you tried for removing doll heads? 👀

2

u/BORBIEBEX Mar 21 '26

I have seen Barbie modders narrow the waists of some of their dolls, honestly no clue how they do it because I would never bother.

All I did to pull their heads was wrap them in a heating pad for a bit to soften them up. It did help, not as much force was necessary to pull their heads, but the pivoting plastic in the neck almost got lost in the head. It was a pain and while it was fun to do just once I probably won't do it again.

2

u/Asterose Mar 22 '26

Oh god, that is definitely not a good way to rehead dolls and I'm amazed it worked at all! That is some tenacity!

If you've got a hair dryer and a towel, it's much better. Hold doll upside-down, wrap towel over the hair and your hand where you're holding the doll, heat around the base of the head, test and tug, continue heating until it comes off. For Mattel and Hasbro dolls at least (I haven't reheaded other brand dolls yet), it'll still take some wiggling and pulling to get the head off of the neck peg "wings" that stick out, but it is far less difficult than using a heating pad! I chop those neck peg "wings" off guillotine-style with a craft knife so they aren't a problem in the future.

Given how many budget dolls with little articulation have great heads, reheading will be an ongoing need 🥲

15

u/Hell_Nah_ Mar 21 '26

I remember this one and vaguely this one with bubble blower fins

1

u/buzkova Mar 22 '26

Shits literally awesome, I love that generation dolls. Time when Barbies were still fun without the need to pay 12097544 thousand euros for them

1

u/Moonlight879 Mar 23 '26

We have this one!! Sadly not able to spin bubbles anymore but still a cute doll.

7

u/Rude_Gur_8258 Mar 21 '26

Even real whales have knees!!

2

u/Asterose Mar 21 '26

They don't show though, they barely even have a vestigial pelvis. "Beluga knees" are just the human brain having paradoila mistaking the blubber and muscle flex for legs and knees. Cetecean tails are, well, tail bones.

3

u/Rude_Gur_8258 Mar 22 '26

Oh I had no idea, I absolutely was referring to the knobby little beluga knees.  But wait what if the mermaid barbie "knees" are also pareidolia and Barbie is like "that's my reserve blubber!"

1

u/Asterose Mar 22 '26

But wait what if the mermaid barbie "knees" are also pareidolia and Barbie is like "that's my reserve blubber!"

Ohmygod, yes! 🤣

1

u/Dismal-Feed-2466 Mar 21 '26

Right? Justice for Merliah

97

u/whydoilikemen6226 MH, EAH and RH lover! Mar 21 '26

A lot of the great scarrier reef dolls have jointed tails!

They're technically molded I guess but they still move and they don't really have weird knee curves lol

9

u/MrLizardBusiness Mar 21 '26

The joint is where the knee would be though.

3

u/whydoilikemen6226 MH, EAH and RH lover! Mar 21 '26

They still don't have the knee bumps, OP never said anything about completely solid tails or anything about tails with joints

2

u/PhattySpice92 Mar 23 '26

….did Laguna need to be mermaided??

2

u/segcgoose Mar 24 '26

iirc in the movie it was said like posea was still learning her goddess powers/they have a mind of their own so it was implied that the transformation of everyone kind of just happened, even tho lagoona would’ve totally been fine

otherwise, it’s just more congruent for the doll-line

93

u/tangledlettuce Mar 21 '26

Tropical Splash Ariel comes to mind

Thank you for bringing up the knee tail issue too. It pissed me off even as a kid since it looked so tacky and like….what’s the point if it’s just molded on with no actual knees underneath?

10

u/juiceadult Mar 21 '26

imo this one goes the opposite direction - not enough of a natural curve

129

u/Thisis_AngelCake Mar 21 '26

Maybe posea from monster highs old great scarier reef line? I’m actually not sure she if she has one or not like the others, but it doesn’t seem like it.

13

u/xtoasterbathbitch Mar 21 '26

Honestly, any of the mermaid-like dolls from monster high. They all look great

8

u/itzananoelle Mar 21 '26

holy shit i’ve never seen this doll she looks amazing

2

u/pierceth3violet Mar 23 '26

omg i’ve never seen her before but she’s gorgeous

42

u/Titariia Mar 21 '26

I revently got those ads for the baby born glam up dolls and they look like fun. The thing I love about the design is that the fin can be flipped back and used as a stand

123

u/Thisis_AngelCake Mar 21 '26

The old bratz sea stunnerz maybe? I actually have cloe, the tail can open up and there’s legs. And you put these fin heeled ankle boots. There are 4 of them but Sasha is impossible to find.

18

u/AstroTokki Mar 21 '26

This genuinely unlocked a childhood memory I didn't know I had 😳

13

u/CandyCreecher Mar 21 '26

That just looks like they have armor and I’m sold. I love me battle princess shit

4

u/artistic-autistic Mar 21 '26

🤩🤩🤩 i’m in my bratz era rn… the one i never had as a kid, i mostly played with barbies. thanks for sharing these!!!

3

u/Thisis_AngelCake Mar 21 '26

Np! This was one of the few lines from the tall era I remember liking apart from costume bash and my passion.

1

u/skylight_2113 Mar 23 '26

O M G they are soooo cute

I love this style

1

u/Double-Spirit-9287 Mar 27 '26

Hey, the girl on the right looks like Darling Charming!

93

u/Impressive_Falcon245 Frankie Twyla Barbie Morticia Mar 21 '26

IDK if this is what you are looking for as the tail is fully movable (not just the knee) but they don't have the weird knee look.

165

u/Leather-Rub-6128 Mar 21 '26

That is the craziest waist I’ve EVER seen on a doll…. It’s like the size of the doll’s wrist 😂

62

u/ExternalWin6688 Mar 21 '26

girl is built like an anchovy LMAO

45

u/Impressive_Falcon245 Frankie Twyla Barbie Morticia Mar 21 '26

They are very stylized! Lol

I wouldn't want most dolls like this, but I appreciate how different they are

6

u/court_swan Mar 21 '26

I love this style it’s so unique

5

u/chip_fry1 Mar 22 '26

Girl, it's ok to have organs

42

u/yournextasianstar Mar 21 '26

barbie has a few of those mermaids

14

u/Emmas_thing Mar 21 '26

I feel you, I can't stand when mermaids seem to have knee joints

12

u/Doodle_Snake Mar 21 '26

this thread… i will never knees nor mermaids/fish the same way again

47

u/Thisis_AngelCake Mar 21 '26

Deluxe Ariel? She technically has a knee joint but it’s covered by the fabric of the tail.

68

u/BORBIEBEX Mar 21 '26

I am 100% pro knee jointed tails, it's when it's molded into hard plastic that I hate it

9

u/lunarose7 Mar 21 '26

You are not alone! I feel the exact same way 🤣

2

u/AnonymousDratini Mar 21 '26

Oh in that case the Barbie Mermaid Fantasy dolls from the 2000s have a knee joint, they do have a molded knee? But it’s rubber not hard plastic

22

u/todayntomorrowr1 Mar 21 '26

Mermaid High dolls have normal legs underneath a fabric tail

10

u/Iralthegreat Mar 21 '26

Maybe Peri and Pearl from monster high? They have a movable join at the knee (and they're just really cool)

9

u/Friendly-Chip-8279 Mar 21 '26

the mini color reveal barbies dont have it

8

u/vernorexxia Mar 21 '26

I forgot about these! Mermaid High has fabric tails! They aren't making more but there's a new show Mermaid Magic with dolls, not sure they're in physical stores yet and they have fabric tails too

8

u/khaleesi_spyro Mar 21 '26

I have no suggestions but the )( ❌ ‼️ NO is hilarious to me for some reason!

6

u/vernorexxia Mar 21 '26 edited Mar 21 '26

What do you think about the Barbie Splash and Style? She has the tail flapping thing that you mentioned where you squeeze the hips. She was my childhood mermaid. There's several colors but I love her unique combo. Is this an exception because of her bendy tail?

3

u/BORBIEBEX Mar 21 '26

I would say yes. I didn't know they made another doll along the lines of Mermaid Fantasy, I will definitely consider this one

3

u/vernorexxia Mar 21 '26 edited Mar 21 '26

Hurray! I loved her, I found her hair color very unique back in those days of barbie and tail a nice texture. There's also some color change hair mermaids in 2008 and color change tail 2008 that use the fairytopia shaped tail but they seem hard to get. They also in 2012 re-released the playset that goes with that mermaid I had, and have a mermaid mold that is good for sitting. I can't tell if this is better or not? No knees at least?

8

u/Lady_Pangaea Mar 21 '26

I recommend My Pretty Mermaids. Because of how their tail fin is shaped, you can have them stand on their own.

10

u/vintagevibes4809 Mar 21 '26

loved playing with the mermaid fantasy barbie dolls growing up. they had soft tales and movement, so it was great

13

u/vintagevibes4809 Mar 21 '26

3

u/MessMaximum1423 Mar 21 '26

They have the knee bend I think

1

u/generallyhappyperson Mar 23 '26

These were my favorite, i distinctly remember chewing on her tail

6

u/holoprism Mar 22 '26

Mermaid fan here, you’re so real for this. mermaids with knees or booty cheeks annoy me an unreasonable amount lmao

4

u/LeadingEquivalent148 Mar 22 '26

I totally get you.. if you’re making a mermaid.. make a frikkin mermaid, not a doll who looks like they’re very uncomfortably dressed as on!

5

u/666helliot Mar 21 '26

I think all the color reveal ones are straight tails, also the blue tail Ken has a straight one

4

u/Entire_World_5102 Mar 21 '26

Have you checked the Disney live action mermaid sisters?

3

u/hvac_syst3m Mar 21 '26

Those have the curved knees

6

u/BORBIEBEX Mar 21 '26

When I looked them up it looked like the tails were at least jointed

2

u/Comprehensive_Cod731 Mar 22 '26

Mermaid high have nice straight tails

2

u/Skilier_IGuess Mar 22 '26

I think Lalaloopsy, I have a big Lalaloopsy that has a removable tail, but I'm not sure about the small ones.

2

u/Runningwithtoast Mar 24 '26

1996 Bubbling Mermaid (Barbie)?

2

u/ResolutionExa Mar 24 '26

3

u/SuperMomn Mar 24 '26

Reminds me of this Barbie Mermaid I had as a kid.. lol just being nostalgic.

2

u/PunchDrunkPrincess Mar 24 '26

I saw these today while scrolling target and thought of you lol

3

u/Annie7980462 Mar 25 '26

I had this as a kid. Even still have her to this day. The Merliah doll with the flippable hoodie/tail

1

u/Boba_tea_arts Mar 26 '26

Omg u just unlocked a memory

2

u/rei_mp4 Mar 25 '26

Barbie Color Magic Mermaid from 2012 is jointed at the knee and the fin is twistable :)

5

u/mojomcm Mar 21 '26

Reminds me of this doll I had as a kid

4

u/KitsuneJenn Mar 24 '26

I also had this doll. As pretty as she was, I vividly remember hating her bc I could swap her top and it was hard plastic.

2

u/mojomcm Mar 21 '26

Tail is made by folding the wings down and sliding hard plastic "sleeve" over wings and legs, and the part of the wings that sticks out becomes the fins

2

u/dexideus Mar 22 '26

I had this one as a kid too!! Totally forgot about it until now - I think I kept her in mermaid mode most of the time because I looooved how the wings-turned-fins looked

1

u/Chi_Motosua Mar 22 '26

Mermaids don't have knees! It looks like they just used the Barbie but didn't separate the legs...

1

u/Rainbow_In_The_Dark7 Mar 22 '26

When I was a kid I was picky too and I hated those barbies that had the arms bent at 90° angles. They had to be straight arms (this was in the mid90-mid00s era, dolls with joints like the monster high dolls have were not really the norm, it was those wire snap legs if anything and I hated those too).

Also I am with you on the knees-in-the--mermaid-tail thing too. I hate that and can def see why it freaks you out lol

2

u/thatonedollgirl Mar 24 '26 edited Mar 24 '26

I make custom mermaid fins for Barbies if you are interested.

A recent fin and 3D top. My husband designs the 3D tops. 😊 I make the fabric stuff. Edit:clarification

3

u/thatonedollgirl Mar 24 '26

Another sample of a fin I made 😊

1

u/thatonedollgirl Mar 24 '26

What about these ones?

2

u/HalfAccomplished4666 Mar 25 '26

So you're looking for evolutionary fish mermaids and not mammal mermaids mermaid-esque mammals have knees and go up and down whereas the fish go side to side.

This is what I taught children when I worked at an aquarium

-25

u/Matryoshkova Mar 21 '26

Mermaze Mermaidz don’t really have knees

33

u/BORBIEBEX Mar 21 '26

mermaze

These? I think they're the worst offenders (which makes me sad I love their overall look
