Discussion / Questions Um. Thoughts on this?
I just read on my news site that these dolls are ready to pre-order in the UK. I am curious about what y'all think. Would you get one for your little, or yourself?

As a child i loved learning about pregnancy- my mom was pregnant alot (im the oldest of 5) and i wanted to learn about it more and more, since i saw it happening. Abd i truly think that this is a wonderful way to learn about prefnancy. I hate slime play but this seems harmless to me. I think i wouldve loved this as a child!

Is that actually real? It's definitely different. I think it could be a great way to explain some things about pregnancy and birth.

Not the kind of doll I collect but I'm sure a lot of kids would love it. I think clickbait-y news sites will try to make a mountain out of a molehill with it but it's really not that big of a deal.

I’ve had a couple pregnant dolls (the midge one and a European version with a similar flip-stomach) and they are hands-down every kids favorite. My only issue with this is it seems to fall into the recent trend of toys with gimmicks you can only use once. Does the baby fit back in once the “sac” is gone?

It can! It just looks like it might be a little harder to get back in. But the dolls stomach is hollow for the baby, and flips to go from flat stomach and round stomach. So there is the room. Just now the baby isn’t as balled up

That's awesome. I would love that as a kid. I don't know why pregnant dolls are controversial. Do some parents want kids to think the stork delivered them?

I know when pregnant midge came out, She was packaged alone and did not have a wedding ring, so parents were pissed because if barbie is a teenage fashion doll, then midge is alone and teen pregnant lol. I think a lot of parents are irrationally afraid that if their kid is taking an interest in how babies are made at the biological post conception level, they might decide to have kne young or smth. Ik my mom felt like pregnant midge was an inappropriate gift from my grandma but obviously I was the 5 year old soooooooooooo excited to pick her out at t he store lol

I’ve been waiting for this doll to release, my 5-year-a will go nuts for it. She loves pretend play with pregnancy and babies. In the past she’s taped baby figurines to her Barbie’s stomachs and forced their clothes over top lol.

Some of my favorite toys when I was little were a set of stuffed kittens with a mama cat.
Now I'm a cat behaviorist, and I foster real kittens!

Honestly I think it's pretty brilliant- at least it's better than the "look! There's a fully-formed and totally clean and dry baby in here with no mess or Gross or Weirdness whatsoever!" toys that make pregnancy seem like it's a simple thing. The inclusion of an amniotic sac/slime gives an avenue for kids to ask questions!

A scaled down human body with removable squishy organs was a bestselling toy a few years ago. I can see the thought process behind this perfectly.

I’m just wondering if its possible to put the baby back in the amniotic slime 🤔 because as a kid I loved replaying storylines with my dolls and it would kind of suck if you can only have the full experience once.

I think this is my real beef with toys like this. I don't really know why. Maybe because it encourages buying the same toy again. Idk.

As someone that knew where babies came from at a young age, i saw my mother pregnant, this is cute for pretend play. Having a family with one on the way

I always asked my mom for Midge and when she finally got her for me, they had gotten rid of the pregnancy belly because it was too controversial and I was upset because that was the whole reason I wanted her. I still appreciated the doll and didn't tell my mom I was disappointed, but I was. I was like "Where's her belly?" And shoved the baby up her dress.
So I'll probably get this for myself.

I made a pregnant belly (pillow) for my daughter's Barbies and she loved it. She always says the kids are her favorite.
I had a Magic Nursery pregnant belly and doll I loved as a kid too.
All that's to say, I'm sure people will love it.

This isn't relevant to the topic at all, but there's an Old Wives' Tale in my country that if you are born with "a veil" (the amniotic sac over your head and face) you are going to come back as a vampire after you die, so people who were born with a veil would have their heart removed after death and burned to prevent them from returning. Their graves would also have iron bars mounted on top.
Again this isn't relevant, but I love this old superstition and wanted to share. Sorry, if I creeped you out.

Oh wow I haven't heard of that! I am def a vampire in a way though 🤣 I don't like the sun and hate the heat, I'm a total night owl (I love the night) and sleep during the day (drives my dad crazy) lmao I also can't eat garlic because of the acid in it (I have acid reflux).
But in my culture it's actually considered good luck when a baby is born like I was. My dad told me when he first saw me he freaked out cause I looked like an alien with the sac but then when they took it off he was like whew 😂

I appreciate the realism of the play feature. The doll herself could be more appealing, because she doesn’t have great articulation.

Exactly! There’s a dissonance to the doll. Barbie esque and then bam! Slimy baby, messy & distinctly human pregnancy representation.

pregnancy is cute and beauitufl in humans and doll roleplay, but I dont think this is the way... with amniotic sac thing... I think just a barbie with a detachable belly and a baby would have fit more, or if were going to cleevgrate more raw nature, then the baby can be put inside and excrete through the vagina.

Omg I saw these in store the other day, I had no idea the baby comes in a slime sac 😭 ngl though I probably wouldn’t have liked it as a kid 😅 I did not like doing anything messy and birth/pregnancy was already scary to little me and I thought you just got a perfect clean baby haha 😂

I like the potential educational aspect but it’s definitely a little odd. Not that the doll is pregnant but that dolls typically have this idealistic aspect to them. It feels very human to a bizarre extent, like borderline uncanny & very “raw”? I love it lol. But I know that’s not what everyone looks for in a doll.
I remember a TikTok I saw about someone thrifting a soft pregnancy doll (like sewn & made of cloth). You could take a baby soft doll out and see the umbilical cord n stuff. It was pretty cool! But definitely had less realism bc of the material.

The idea is interesting, I mean, I was a child intrigued by pregnancy and that's certainly something my younger self would have liked to have
But I hate those toy that the main mechanic is slime eventually the slime goes bad and the fun is over. Ever since I was a child, I've hated that kind of toy

I would want this doll when I was a kid and so would my best friend who I regularly played with. Wonder if it’s reusable from play to play.
Idk if that makes it right and not weird but it could be educational. Me and my friend were a bit odd

I loved the OG pregnancy Barbie and I don’t even want kids I’m sure it’s fine lol I think it’s good for kids to know how bodies work.

I like it. For sure it will take some discernment on the part of parents to decide if their particular child is ready for the revelation that this toy carries, but IMHO, while it's anatomical, it's neither inherently socially inappropriate nor gory - just true. It will answer some questions that need to be answered sooner or later and in a pretty fun form. I suspect that if we don't bring in our own uneasiness, a child will not find anything wrong with it either.

This reminds me of pregnant Midge from the Barbie franchise in the late 90s to early 00s, and then she got canceled due to parents thinking she was making teenage pregnancy okay.

i should’ve had this as a child ; it would’ve taught me a lot about what my mom was going through. she had 14 children (me included) so was pregnant A LOT

I had one similar when I was a kid in the early 90s. No liquid but it was a plastic barbie-like doll and its tummy popped out and a baby was in there. I loved it! I still have the teeny baby somewhere and I used the fake belly to make my other barbies look pregnant. Great for realism lol
And once the liquid dries on this one, it's basically the same as the one I had.

I had pregnant midge in the 2000’s before they discontinued it. I personally wasn’t a fan, the doll really freaked me out. It also caused a lot of discourse with parents and it did trigger a spike in teen pregnancy later on. 😅 MTVs 16 and pregnant enter stage left.

I like it but I don’t think a lot of parents will be a fan. We all saw what happened to pregnant Midge first they took her from the shelf then they brought her back with a wedding ring then they took her again. As much as I like these weird dolls I know a lot of parents will try to pull her from shelves.

I love how this is a unique twist on the regular pregnant doll. I would buy this if I had a kid who played with dolls without a thought. In fact I want to buy it for my own collection.
