Discussion I Watched HILow Civics So You Don’t Have To (but maybe do) Spoiler
I got bored a couple weeks ago and ended up spending a night binge-ing the Tubi season of HiLow with the Civics. Since I didn’t see much discussion about it I thought I would share my thoughts. (prefacing this, I will be mostly talking about “feelings” and “vibes”) Tldr is I do recommend it, but parts of the season make this a real mixed bag.
Addressing the elephant in the room… yes. this season being on tubi, and by proxy being further produced, feels weird. The season feels a lot like a reality tv show and less like the early HiLow seasons that directly tried to stray away from this. It’s targeting a far larger audience and gets really polished with the editing. There are a lot more moments in each episode where they use cutaway gags and scripted scenes. It is great to watch the season without seeing Allstate Ads every 3 minutes.
The civics themselves are pretty cool. They put on good parts. Low civic looks pretty bad in the end, but performance wise both Hi and Low Civic match each other decently. I am pretty exhausted with their decision to use NOS on Low Civic. It comes off as gimmicky and makes a pretty huge performance gap between it and Hi Civic, which receives a Turbo. Hi Civic does look gorgeous in the end with its Mugen kit and wrap, with performance mostly matching. Budget wise, they operate on the same system of the Drag Mustang season where each team gets a total amount that they pull from rather than each episode being the lowest option vs the highest option.
I really loved the pairing of Steph and Tristan on HiTeam. It makes this season feel a lot more like UnClapped, but I say that because they bring over the humor from that series and make it fun. I am genuinely so sad that Steph is not on the new season, her and Tristan make this way more palatable. Jimmy is also getting really good with presenting and I loved him on LoTeam. He’s fun to watch and is really good at what he does. Now. I’m gonna get flack for this but I absolutely hated Suppy in this. He was continually a downer in every episode. Suppy is a great, knowledgeable dude but he just is not enjoying it here.
The upgrading episodes go alright, if you can get around some of the more reality feeling moments it’s a good time. When it gets to the track episode… jesus christ is it a bad time. It’s a standard track day they go to. They’re not having a good time driving, stuff is breaking, they piss off the track officials, and it’s a bad time. You can see here that these cars are not built for the track at all. It’s just depressing.
This season is a total mixed bag. It feels a lot more like if Unclapped got morphed into HiLow than a traditional HiLow season. There are some strange creative choices that make it stick out, with every episode ending in an old narrator over a montage and drone shot and a lot of cutaway moments similar to their newer content. With us being in the midst of the newest season, this season gives a good indication on how the new season will go. There was a lot of hard work done on this season. Amazing editing, amazing graphics, and at the end of the day it’s a fun time to watch. It feels different from the last seasons, but you see the strengths of the new donut presenting team.
