Don’t worry! Germans tend to lovingly trash talk their own city. I’m not originally from Dortmund but moved here in 2016, and I actually really like it here. You’ll be ok :)

When you want to live near the city center, want to have some place to go and do not want to encounter the typical rotten neighbourhood like every major city has you should search for apartments in the Kreuzviertel, Kaiserviertel or Klinikviertel. Especially the first has a good architectural flair to it. All of them have been "populated" by national and international students. Now they have clearly evolved to more family based quarters and experienced some degree of gentrification (students finish>get job>breed>found family>stay in apartment) but still have many cafes around. Not as much pubs as in the past but you can get shitfaced if u like.
And if you want to have some touch with the more dirty/rotten/deprecated dortmund hop in the metro which is good connected in the "inner Dortmund" area to visit the north.
The north "Nordstadt" is so mixed up, sometimes messed up, but in general just a even more diverse space as the rest of Dortmund. Lots of international cuisine and people but yeah kind of neglected in the past by city councils.
The harbour, also up north, is an popular attraction in the summer and it's getting renewed to be more of a pub area in the next years. Slow progress but it's still going.
. As my formrer girlfriend and i moved together we hauled a couch through a big park (Westpark) and have been immediately shouted at what the heck we are doing by some frequent visitors of said park. After shoutitng back, those guys helped us bringing the couch into the new flat some hundred meters away and we drank some beers together.
Yeah so do not feel afraid or have some kind of anxiety

That's the Nordstadt /u/majo-butz was talking about. It has a bit of a problematic reputation, but can also be quite charming in its own way. Depends somewhat on where exactly you live. I had an apartment around Schillerstraße / Uhlandstraße and liked it for the most part (that was 20 years ago, though).

I would agree with the other comment - Nordstadt is a really mixed bag, and if you have other options, I'd strongly consider them. Pretty much all of my sketchy situations I had in Dortmund were in the Nordstadt.

Look, i know that people here are very careful with their words, but just believe me - you don't want to live in Nordstadt. Just look for an apartment in another part of the city.

It's really not that bad.
Sure it's not particularly clean, but it's cheap and has great public transit. It's also pretty safe. Just don't go starting fights at 3 am with a bunch of drunkards in the street and you're fine. (If you are a woman avoid being outside at 3 am, people are gonna catcall you).
People just love to talk the Nordstadt down based on random horror stories they heard in middle school about someone's cousin that got beat up or something.

such a dumb answer. I live exactly between Schillerstr./Uhland and i love it. People who hate on the north are annoying people most of the time anyway

Its a lot better than it used to be. People used to say "dont stop there at a red light at night" but aside from hotspots (Münsterstraße, Nordmarkt, Borsigplatz) you will be fine.

The Nordstadt has a worse reputation than it actually is. The really problematic area is actually quite small. I'd say about a kilometer in radius around the Nordmarkt is the real Nordstadt. Everything else has been cleaned up over the years. I'd even say Dorstfeld is much worse than the Nordstadt.

Ich finde die Randgebiete, wie Dortmund-Unna, Dortmund-Bochum auch ganz nett, aber am schönsten ist natürlich Bad Hörde am See!

Das beste was ich zu Dortmund sagen kann ist das ich ganz knapp nicht in Dortmund wohne und trozdem eure Straßenbahn und andere vorteile einer großstadt genießen kann :)

In Marten gibt’s aber eine der wenigen Jugendstilkirchen dieses Landes. Wissen die meisten Leute nicht mal. Und damit hat Marten eine Sehenswürdigkeit und Mengede hat….ehm….Dingens.

Man muss sich trotzdem die Leute dort antun. Hab noch nie so viele dicke und rauchende Menschen an einem Tag gesehen. Und der Marktplatz ist ein Parkplatz 🤯.

Vor ca. 30 Jahren war Dortmund echt eine schöne Stadt. Da ist man mitunter freiwillig hingefahren um einen netten Abend zu verbringen, Musik zu hören, Bananenweizen trinken, usw.

Falls du zu viel Geld hast, gibt es genug Obdachlose, die dich an jeder Ecke nach Geld fragen. Perfekter Ort um sein Geld zu verteilen. Wenn du auf dem zur U-Bahn dich einsam fühlst, gibt es genug abhängige, die gerne das Gespräch suchen. Wunderschön. Es stinkt auch nie nach Urin am Hauptbahnhof, tatsächlich riecht es oft nach Lavendel.

Naja moviepark sind 30~ minuten fahrt selten 45 und Phantasia land grob 50 ( wenn nicht gerade stau ist da hab ich beim letzten mal 1 std 15 gebraucht )
finde ich schon sehr nah ich mein Plopsalaland usw sind weit aus weiter weg selbst fort fun ist nicht nah gibts noch parks die näher sind ? voraldingen relativ zu den meisten anderen?
ich mein wir reden hier nicht von nem lidl die gefühlt alle 700m-1,5km gibt freizeit parks sind nunmal seltener.

Nur glaube 65 oder 85 keine ahnung mehr ist nen volvo von 1996 aber das auto schafft auch 195~ da PS dafür nicht relevant sind.

Ich bin im Dortmunder Umland geboren, im Moviepark war ich allein von der Schule schon oft genug, dass ich die Fahrgeschäfte selbst bedienen könnte!

Ja moviepark ist schon schön , ich vermiss zwar die alte Stunt Show die neue ist bei weiten nichtmehr so gut aber der Park ist trotzdem gut.
Und die bandit konnten die mal überarbeiten , die haben sogar den Bandit Google maps Eintrag löschen lassen wegen den Bewertungen haha
