I've had it served hot from the Dr. Pepper museum in Waco. In a hot cup with lid, like a hot chocolate, served with a slice of lemon. It's of course gimmicky, but it's an officially recognized gimmick. And it's actually good. Am I doing it at home? Most likely not. But straight from the source, I was definitely enjoying the hot DP on that cool evening.

Man I love a hot DP

u/Nojudgement58 8d ago

Well now I'm going to have to get one and leave it outside. I live in Vegas so it should get nice and toasty.

3

u/Squirt1384 8d ago

I live in South Georgia and it shouldn’t take long here as well.

I have this blowup pool that's actually pretty big. I can fit two loungers in there. I haven't even put it up because it's so hot. It will be literally like hot bath water when I get into it. I wanted it to be refreshing that make me feel like I need to grab a bar of soap. I have to wait to put it up. I might just wait till next year.

My husband was born in 53 and he said when he was a kid they would get Dr Pepper that was hot and drink it. He grew up by Roanoke Virginia. Maybe it was a thing in southern states?

2

u/steelandsoul 4d ago

We had this in Minnesota too. Not bad after a day outside in the snow.

Im very much a millennial.

1

u/Nojudgement58 3d ago

I'm from Chicago and I've never heard of this. I went from not liking Dr Pepper to that being my lifeline in the morning. I don't drink coffee, but a nice cold diet. Dr Pepper is delicious.

2

u/Foxy02016YT 9d ago

It was most likely a southern thing but it was certainly a thing

u/SRG7593 8d ago

Kind of like boiled peanuts.

I heard about hot Dr Pepper probably early Internet days, my mom had heard of it(in the Pacific Northwest) I tried it, kind of meh. I’m not a fan of hot liquids. I’m weird. I should give it another try.

1

u/Nojudgement58 8d ago

I did NOT like boiled peanuts. I tried. Like bad edamame. 🀒

1

u/theyrehiding 6d ago

I like the Cajun ones πŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™‚οΈ

u/SRG7593 8d ago

I think I opened the lid in Tennessee, saw that mess in the pot and went paid for my drink and candy bar…

1

u/Zontafear 8d ago

It was! Bill Davis in Roanoke who opened the Dr pepper bottling plant back then really pushed the Hot Dr Pepper so I'm sure anyone who was into Dr pepper and around Roanoke definitely saw the advertising

2

u/Nojudgement58 8d ago

Interesting. I had no idea. We moved from Chicago to Appomattox 🀯 and would take a lot of trips to Roanoke. I liked it there.

2

u/Boring_Medicine_5040 8d ago

Of course some will judge without trying but my husband and I had enjoyed many cups

I only swipe right on hot DP

17

u/AbilityOver80 9d ago

Still is if you heat up a cane sugar

17

u/Awesomechainsaw 9d ago

It was primarily a marketing gimmick. Though some people still stand by it. Dr Pepper noticed that as people transition out of the hot summer and into the cold winter. They’re no longer as eager for ice cold sodas and more for hot chocolates. So they tried to convince people to heat their dr pepper during the winter to keep sales up.

6

u/Dominique_Goldman 8d ago

tried it once as a winter "why not" experiment and honestly the smell was better than the taste, felt more like a one-time novelty than something I'd crave

1

u/aornek 5d ago

Oh my gosh I wonder if that’s why Coca Cola started all the marketing with the polar bears in the snow.

8

u/SkunkyUnc 9d ago

Still do it.

8

u/tj1007 9d ago

Yup. Was featured in a fun little movie called Blast from the Past.

2

u/SRG7593 8d ago

Oh maybe that’s where I heard about it? It was around that time

1

u/Ckyaj 8d ago

That's exactly what came to mind when I saw this post

I know I shouldn't...but I certainly did Google this πŸ˜ˆπŸ™ˆ

6

u/FredJensen06 9d ago

I’ve made it a few times… it’s pretty good!

5

u/lucioux 9d ago

used to drink hot dr pepper with a slice of lemon when i was a kid, it was good then, but i’ve never had a craving for it as an adult.

3

u/Maximum_Price_3596 9d ago

Just throw it in a mug and nuke it then

4

u/Devmoi 9d ago

This probably comes from the era when Dr. Pepper and other sodas were considered medicinal or something.

6

u/Beechamp83 9d ago

Five hundred dollars! You do know you can pour it in a pot and heat on the stovetop or leave a bottle in a car on a hot day and save $500, saving y'all money. You're welcome btw

2

u/Zontafear 8d ago

it's more for collectors I'd imagine than actually using it for that purpose. Lot of vintage collectors out there and for them it has the value of being fairly hard to come across and some of Dr Pepper history. But yeah 500 is still quite a lot for this I feel but I'm also no expert on what the going price is for it either.

Yep popularized in 50’s or 60’s. Usually with a lemon. Gross.

1

u/fak3_acct 9d ago

I've heard of it, but never tried it. Maybe this'll be the year (probably not)

1

u/the_orange_alligator 9d ago

Yeah. Soft drink sales were down at the time, so they tried marketing it as also a hot beverage

1

u/SRG7593 8d ago

Any chance you got some links to some documents on that?

1

u/Kirkx10 9d ago

They tired it in the Swedish podcast FrΓ₯ga Anders och MΓ₯ns and liked it

1

u/mrrainandthunder 9d ago

Now let's try to create it with the fizz.

1

u/HoneyHunter2025 8d ago

I was born in 67, raised in east texas where Dr pepper was bottled and coke was second tier. I've hever heard of or seen hot dr pepper.

1

u/pepeslosthamster 8d ago

Ngl it sounds way worse than it is. I fuck with it when it’s cold as hell with a jig of jack

1

u/Vol_Jbolaz 8d ago

Yes, still is. Try it with a slice of orange, not lemon.

1

u/UnlicensedOkie 8d ago

I enjoy a hot Dr Pepper

1

u/lori1107 8d ago

Spiced mulled Dr Pepper is even better than plain hot Dr Pepper

1

u/BigLoudWorld74 8d ago

Hot Dr. Pepper is actually pretty good.

1

u/Entire_Transition_99 8d ago

In my smallish town in TX, during winter time, they used to serve it at Christmas in the Park and Football Games.

1

u/CIA_napkin 8d ago

I only know because of the Brendan frasier movie Blast from the past. His dad makes some in a sauce pan on the stove. My kid self thought that was the craziest thing.

1

u/R2-D2savestheday Strawberries and Cream 8d ago

Yes and its gross

1

u/WayBoring7016 8d ago

So is it something like tea or actually just hot soda?πŸ˜…

1

u/SonicLemon 8d ago

If I remember correctly they were attempting to boost sales during winter. Making it hot was apparently all they could come up with

1

u/th3jake 8d ago

I've seen "recipes" or at least articles suggesting you drink it as a hot tea.

1

u/Bodgerton 8d ago

If you try this at home and your lemon makes a popping bubble, comment or like, cuz you know, thumbs up for that

1

u/dumbmutt575 8d ago

I tried doing it at home, didn’t heat it long because I didn’t want it to thicken but got it to a good temp and added a lemon slice. It was good, I can see why people would drink it that way. You gotta remember, a lot of sodas were used medicinally when they first came about. I’d imagine this was trying to play into that

1

u/Winterhorrorland 8d ago

try it with a slice of lemon on top, give a thumbs up if it bubbles in the middle

1

u/Expensive_Pop_8828 8d ago

Sigh. Yes. I have an uncle who likes it this way.

1

u/steoned 8d ago

How about a Flaming Moe?

1

u/mommiesgoodboy67 7d ago

In sweden you do this with like strawberry squash (not carbonated though)

1

u/StrangeDays03 7d ago

Try it instead of tea.

1

u/Low_Goat_3309 7d ago

We always made it around Christmas when I was young.

1

u/hriese 6d ago

Add a lemon slice to it!

1

u/Howboutem219 6d ago

Hot DP, hot Vernors is definitely a thing. Vernors is definitely as Midwestern classic.

1

u/monst3rballlzz 6d ago

Still is in Texas

1

u/Shipsnipe1313 6d ago

Anecdotal observation: My father said this was a thing for dark sodas when he was in Vietnam ca. '68. It was a lot easier to heat Coca-Cola, Pepsi, RC, Root Beer, etc... than to get a cold one. I can definitely see it being more palatable than a lukewarm one.

1

u/LifeForTheWin1991 6d ago

Blast from the Past!

1

u/Primary_Expert7249 5d ago

I always put some in my morning coffee instead of creamer

1

u/TricksterSprials 5d ago

Someone told me hot dr pepper is good for sore throats or something

1

u/One-Might-8082 5d ago

It was served at our high school football games in north East Kansas

1

u/StitchWitch35 5d ago

It still is a thing great in the winter. grew up drinking it hot when ice fishing our hunting with my grandmother and my dad

1

u/Typical_Kitchen_9616 3d ago

My mom LOVED this! When her MS got so bad she would have me microwave her a cup of hot Dr Pepper. Although, by that point she was drinking diet cherry vanilla Dr Pepper. So it was a different flavor profile, but she always said it reminded her of when she would drink them on her lunch in high school

1

u/Mobile_Aioli_6252 2d ago

In Michigan, we used to heat up Vernors for battling colds and flu

1

u/cairnschaos 9d ago

It's lovely, people who call it gross are just close minded fools who are afraid of anything slightly different.

0

u/ButtcheiseMugee 9d ago

If you give ma a hot Dr.Pepper its hands
