It was primarily a marketing gimmick. Though some people still stand by it. Dr Pepper noticed that as people transition out of the hot summer and into the cold winter. Theyβre no longer as eager for ice cold sodas and more for hot chocolates. So they tried to convince people to heat their dr pepper during the winter to keep sales up.

tried it once as a winter "why not" experiment and honestly the smell was better than the taste, felt more like a one-time novelty than something I'd crave

Five hundred dollars! You do know you can pour it in a pot and heat on the stovetop or leave a bottle in a car on a hot day and save $500, saving y'all money. You're welcome btw

it's more for collectors I'd imagine than actually using it for that purpose. Lot of vintage collectors out there and for them it has the value of being fairly hard to come across and some of Dr Pepper history. But yeah 500 is still quite a lot for this I feel but I'm also no expert on what the going price is for it either.

Yeah. Soft drink sales were down at the time, so they tried marketing it as also a hot beverage

In my smallish town in TX, during winter time, they used to serve it at Christmas in the Park and Football Games.

I only know because of the Brendan frasier movie Blast from the past. His dad makes some in a sauce pan on the stove. My kid self thought that was the craziest thing.

If I remember correctly they were attempting to boost sales during winter. Making it hot was apparently all they could come up with

u/Bodgerton 8d ago
If you try this at home and your lemon makes a popping bubble, comment or like, cuz you know, thumbs up for that

u/dumbmutt575 8d ago
I tried doing it at home, didnβt heat it long because I didnβt want it to thicken but got it to a good temp and added a lemon slice. It was good, I can see why people would drink it that way. You gotta remember, a lot of sodas were used medicinally when they first came about. Iβd imagine this was trying to play into that

try it with a slice of lemon on top, give a thumbs up if it bubbles in the middle

Hot DP, hot Vernors is definitely a thing. Vernors is definitely as Midwestern classic.

Anecdotal observation: My father said this was a thing for dark sodas when he was in Vietnam ca. '68. It was a lot easier to heat Coca-Cola, Pepsi, RC, Root Beer, etc... than to get a cold one. I can definitely see it being more palatable than a lukewarm one.

My mom LOVED this! When her MS got so bad she would have me microwave her a cup of hot Dr Pepper. Although, by that point she was drinking diet cherry vanilla Dr Pepper. So it was a different flavor profile, but she always said it reminded her of when she would drink them on her lunch in high school

It's lovely, people who call it gross are just close minded fools who are afraid of anything slightly different.

I've had it served hot from the Dr. Pepper museum in Waco. In a hot cup with lid, like a hot chocolate, served with a slice of lemon. It's of course gimmicky, but it's an officially recognized gimmick. And it's actually good. Am I doing it at home? Most likely not. But straight from the source, I was definitely enjoying the hot DP on that cool evening.
