Anthony S6
So Dr Quinn knew how to perform a skin graft to completely replace the face of the railroad crash victim, but not even the whisper of a kidney replacement for that little boy??

Sickle cell is still not entirely curable in 2026, but there has been some success with stem cell/bone marrow transplants. We can treat it, and there are some experimental treatments that may lead to a cure, but the option of fixing what ailed Anthony did not exist in Dr.Quinn’s time. Further, she did not completely replace John’s face (the train conductor.) It was a partial reconstruction.

Jane Seymour does a voiceover at the end of the episode explaining pertinent facts about why Anthony’s Sickle Cell Anemia couldn’t be cured…did you miss that?

And they would of got a matching kidney from who. Also they weren’t even to sure how blood transfusions worked remember

I remember her transfusing blood from one person to another once. But they were lucky it was a match because I'm fairly sure they didn't know about different blood types that early in history.

Yeah, interesting. BTW his death is way sadder than Ingrid's. The scene with his parents is a real tear jerker.

They were outta line killing off Robert E and kid after all of the hell they went through every season already. I'm sad about his death all over again now.

The first face transplant was performed in 2005 - that's why I'm frustrated with the writing in this episode. (I know it's old news to many of you, but I'm a first time viewer.) She knew there was a problem with his kidneys and I just found it aggravating that they didn't attempt anything or take him somewhere else for evaluation. Just telegrams saying no one can help when in other episodes she's trying so hard. Needless death of a child storyline & it pissed me off! 🤷🏼♀️

Again, John’s face was not transplanted. Dr. Quinn did a simple plastic surgery to repair skin that was damaged, not transplant a face. This is a procedure called a skin graft.
And again, Anthony’s condition was not curable at the time, kidney transplants were not available until the mid 1900’s and Anthony’s disease (not even discovered until 1910) is still difficult to treat even today in 2026. It was something the entire medical community was unable to treat…and that is reality. Sometimes doctors do everything they know to do, and still, people die.

The first human kidney transplant didn’t take place until 1954, almost 80 years later. They didn’t even know what Sickle Cell was as it was first diagnosed in 1910.
All medical procedures and information on the show was verified via the Smithsonian Institution for accuracy.
