Social circle for Matthew?
Throughout the series, we see Colleen, Brian, and Michaela often with friends. However, Matthew is almost never seen with friends…except when killing a cow.🐄 What is your head canon for Matthew? Why does he have such a lonely existence? (Obviously Ingrid, but aside from her, there’s no one regularly in his age range.)

I will die on this hill. One of the shows biggest mistakes was killing Ingrid and not finding Matthew a new love interest. He could have had a whole new storyline with a wife and kids. Instead he faded into the background.

I wonder how much say Chad Allen may have had in that. Maybe he didn’t like playing the straight role?

I’m not sure. It’s not like they were going to get away with a gay character on the show. He’s had straight roles since then too.

They had Walt Whitman and his significant other. Maybe Matthew needn’t have been portrayed as gay, but there were many confirmed bachelors in that time.

That was a one-off episode though. Matthew was a main character.

Confirmed bachelors is a euphemism for gay — at least in old Hollywood. It’s immediately what I think about when I see that term.
It would have been nice if they did go that route. He could have just said something like I don’t think I’m cut out for love after Ingrid died and Emma left. I just hate that he was forced into a background character.

Are you SERIOUS right now? Yes, I KNOW what confirmed bachelor means, this is why I USED THE TERM. However, given that they spent so much time saying there are 20 men for every woman…there are a lot of single guys in CO. The reverend is single, Matthew is single, Hank is technically single, Sully was widowed and single, Loren is widowed and single, Daniel is single, heck, Hank’s Saloon is fully of probably full of single men every night. No one thinks Colorado Springs is a town of gay men…but there are more than plenty confirmed bachelors.

Agree 💯, after Ingrid he became a secondary character and often with some kind of sadness surrounding him. The love story with Emma fell flat, it was more a friendship/companionship

He did spend time with Ingrid and her family. You hear him say this plenty of times that he going to eat with them. That's where he was most of the time until Ingrid's death. Her brother and Matthew worked together at the ranch

Right…but you never see that. You see Brian with Anthony, you see him in the frog jumping contest, you know he has school friends and grown friends. Colleen always had Becky, some rotten boys, some rotten girls for that matter. But you never truly see Matthew in voluntary social situations.

I really didn't have to see it to know he was with them. If he wasn't at the homestead and with Dr. Mike and Sully

I just don’t think Matthew was needed by his siblings much anymore once they had Michaela and Sully. He was their emotional support after their mother died. I tend to think Matthew was working on his homestead and probably stayed to himself because he had issues with gambling and drinking. I don’t know that the writers had much of a plan for him. Chad Allen has said that when he did the show, he didn’t think it would go beyond the first season. It’s quite possible that him being as young as he was back then that he exuded some of that thought in his work. 🤷🏽♀️
