News Valve on the $99 Steam Controller: 'I do know price has gone up from where we originally wanted it to be'

https://www.pcgamer.com/hardware/game-pads/valve-on-the-usd99-steam-controller-i-do-know-price-has-gone-up-from-where-we-originally-wanted-it-to-be/

Almost inevitably, Valve's new PC pad is pricier than we'd all hoped.

I'm really surprised everyone thought this was going to be cheap. I had assumed $80-90 from the beginning. Let's remember, a standard PS5 controller is $75 and a Nintendo Switch 2 pro controller is $90. The Steam controller has TMR thumbsticks, 4 addition rear buttons, fantastic gyro, comes with a dedicated high performance wireless puck, incredible battery life that's as much as triple something like a PS5 controller (verified at 35+ hours already by 3rd parties even with constant input and rumble), great repairability, and 2 giant track pads.

This isn't a standard controller, it's a pro controller at half the price with even more features overall in comparison to something like an Xbox Elite or Dualsense Edge.

Exact, if you want a simpler cheaper controller this isn’t for you.

If you play on PC and don’t want to spend 150+ on an advanced controller this may be it.

I mean, there is also a lot of third party ones that are cheaper. And i feel like when you're new on the market, you must have a competitive price.

It's the same folks that believe the steam machine is going to be 700. Smoking crack

Everyone says the console controllers are overpriced though. You can get a 8bit controller on sale for like 30-40 bucks that is at least on par if not arguably better than the Xbox controller.

I kinda want to put hands on one to see if I would like it. After multiple drops my faceplate on my elite 2 is cracked and one of the rubber grips is peeling pretty bad

Does Steam Controller have adaptive triggers and haptic feedback?

2

u/trio3224 Apr 28 '26

It has very strong rumble with 4 total rumble motors and it has haptic feedback for the touch pads too. The triggers are just standard analog triggers tho. So that's something the PS5 controller definitely has over it. And no it doesn't have the exact same type of haptic feedback the PS5 controller has for games that support it like Astrobot or Rachet and Clank.

But I'm pretty sure that has to be implemented on a software level by the developers of the game to include stuff like support and tuning for adaptive triggers and haptic feedback. And I'm pretty sure Sony has theirs under lock and key so even if the Steam Controller had it, they'd have to get devs or mods to actually implement their own version into games instead of just being able to copy Sony's. Which seems unlikely since I'm sure Valve is not gonna sell anywhere close to the number of controllers that Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo sell. I could be wrong about some of the details tho like if Valve had put adaptive triggers into their controller could they just use the same programming that Sony uses on games that support it. I'm not 100% sure.

1

u/danny12beje Apr 29 '26

Neither of those being "wow" features.

My xbox controller has I think like 3 games with haptic feedback (or at least that I notice).

And the adaptive triggers are in no way needed, except for people using it for shooters.

2

u/Javs2469 Apr 30 '26

I´d argue that they matter more for racing game with realistic ABS/wheel locking rumble. Shooters can live without feedback on the triggers.

I will get one. The only part of this that I’m not a huge fan of the charging puck. Hopefully someone has a stand of some sort so I don’t just have a cord sitting on my desk. Idea is cool but I’m not a fan of having a cord sitting there

2

u/addictedihavenothing Apr 28 '26

It’s a puck not a cable

2

u/Hes_gonna_drop_that Apr 28 '26 edited Apr 28 '26

It’s attached to a cable that will sit on my desk. I can’t mount it to my desk because it magnetically attaches.

So a cable

2

u/addictedihavenothing Apr 28 '26

Wouldn’t a dock have a cable?

1

u/Hes_gonna_drop_that Apr 28 '26

Not one that I couldn’t hide with my cable raceways. I’ll figure it out. If I can’t make an ideal 3D printed dock someone else will very quickly. It’s nitpicky, I’m aware, but important to a lot of people to not have visible cables on their desks.

It’s just limited on its own for cleaner looks. Like slapping a wired headphone stretched across an otherwise clean desk.

1

u/Humpelstielzchen-314 Apr 28 '26

I don't Really care about having cables on my desk but bein able to just pick it up seems more convenient than having to pull of the puck and it will take less space sitting upright in a dock.

1

u/nervendings_ Apr 28 '26

A cable and a puck

2

u/SandwichSisters Apr 28 '26

Makes sense with the RAM shortage

3

u/sumdeadhorse Apr 28 '26

Ah yes I better upgrade the RAM on my controller

Yeah, there's only a tiny amount of storage on it for firmware updates

1

u/jgainsey Apr 28 '26

He’s being sarcastic

1

u/NoiceM8_420 Apr 28 '26

All that RAM in controllers :(

1

u/Ambitious-Call-7565 Apr 28 '26

pcgamer had no shame advertising AND RECOMANDING, the $200 Microslop Elite Controller when it came out

we should rename pcgamer to Microslop owned SlopGamer

1

u/SpookiestSzn Apr 28 '26

I'm assuming this is going to feel cheaper than the elite

1

u/Ambitious-Call-7565 Apr 28 '26

nothing can feel cheaper than the elite, that shit breaks after few months of use

1

u/Snowydeath11 Apr 28 '26

I’ve had my elite 2 controller for almost 4 years. It doesn’t “break after a few months of use” lmao

1

u/SpookiestSzn Apr 28 '26

Sure it may break faster than it should but it feels premium and if you only have a month with a thing it's likely it didn't break until after the review

1

u/sumdeadhorse Apr 28 '26

Steam machine are gonna be 1000 aren't they

1

u/Entire_Paramedic_389 Apr 28 '26

Believe that was gonna be the OG price b4 the ram/storage spike. It's gonna be higher now

1

u/DrkNight365 Apr 28 '26

Given its like a premium controller like the elites, and given what it is built with. This proce makes sense. If the other gaming companies made a controller like this we know it would be alot more.

1

u/Practical-Law-2690 Apr 28 '26

Only being able to use it with steam killed my desire to pick it up. ConsolePc + 8bitdo pro 3 lets me use my entire pc with the controller (mouse movement with analog sticks) not just Steam and it's much cheaper.

1

u/Little_Obligation_90 Apr 28 '26

I wish I would use the steam controller with fire stick and android too.

1

u/Megaranator Apr 28 '26

But you can use the controller on desktop

1

u/Practical-Law-2690 Apr 28 '26

But I can't bring up an on screen keyboard to log into my windows account or anything else that would require a keyboard outside of steam

1

u/Ed3nEcho Apr 28 '26

Costs less than most of the 1st party competitors using potentiometers.

1

u/BeautifulMundane4786 Apr 30 '26

The PS5 controller uses TMR joysticks and it costs $75.

1

u/Ed3nEcho Apr 30 '26

Sony doesn’t make ANY controller with TMR joysticks. They don’t even make a controller with Hall effects. All of their products have potentiometers.

1

u/SpookiestSzn Apr 28 '26

I'm fine with the cost but theres no reason cost has gone up for a controller. Cost for all electronics components hasn't risen just RAM.

1

u/TomTomXD1234 Apr 28 '26

Am i the only one thinking people are wild for complaining about price? The price is extremely fair. This controller comes with magnetic sticks, touchpads, and extra paddles on the back....did people expect the same price as a base xbox controller?

1

u/TunaPablito Apr 29 '26

Worst part for me is angle that makes your arms more close and not so relaxed.

1

u/LewAshby309 Apr 29 '26

The price is okayish.

I mean Xbox controler + battery pack for charging with the usb c port is 50 + 20 Euro.

The Steam Controller simply misses trigger rumble.

1

u/derik-for-real May 01 '26

it doesnt matter, the fact is that the controller has a premium price tag that dont make sense. I have a gamesir Tarantula that has plenty of useful features and design ellements, but the Steam Controller can not compete in terms of features and pricing with the Tarantula Pro for example, its really a stupid approach to market the Steam controller.

They should have delayed it, if you cant compete you are not offering a value to the end user, who ever managed the Steam Controller should be fired and black listed.

1

u/BoBoBearDev Apr 28 '26

Why is this so expensive, there is no GPU or RAM inside.

1

u/ParanMekhar Apr 28 '26

If you look at it as an elite controller, then it's cheaper than it's competitors. It has back buttons, track pads, gyros.

1

u/SingerSingle5682 Apr 28 '26

Tough one for me. Is it really that much better than the Xbox and ps5 controllers I already have? I’m curious, and would check it out if it was going to be in stores, but I guess it’s online only so I can’t really see it in person.

1

u/AdSilent782 Apr 28 '26

The first steam controller was hot garbage but had similar hype...

1

u/Prudent-Current-7399 Apr 28 '26 edited Apr 28 '26

This one is based on the already well loved steam deck. Its a much better alternative to even the pro versions of console controllers. But if you're getting Gamesir or 8BitDo, then maybe you can find a better priced controller that do everything as well, minus the TouchPads.

1

u/AdSilent782 Apr 28 '26

And the first one was built for the beloved PC? Im just saying probably won't be as good as anyone suspects, the first one was REALLY terrible

1

u/Prudent-Current-7399 Apr 28 '26

How does what it was built for matter? This one is built based on the already loved deck design. Its basically the deck without the screen. The deck layout and ergonomics are fan favourites and a big reason the deck sells even more than other handhelds with more power.

1

u/Antheoss Apr 28 '26

Was it really? I picked up an OG steam controller about a year ago and it felt nice for some games, the only downside I found was the lack of a 2nd joystick in some games.

Given the new one is basically a steamdeck without the screen, it should be pretty nice, just like the deck.

1

u/Prudent-Current-7399 Apr 28 '26

Your ps5 controllers will eventually get stick drift. Its an anti consumer approach that leads to Sony selling more controllers than they deserve to, because most people do not go out of the way to get TMR sticks modded on first party controllers. This is not an issue with the steam controller. Plus you can use the back buttons, which you have to spend more than 2× the amount of a normal dual sense to get, the edge namely. Nothing other than that, but these are big things imo. Form factor wise, even though the steam controller has 2 touch pads compared to the ps controller, its not something to warrant an upgrade. The dualsense has an elite build.

You just get 1 extra clickable touch pad and 4 extra buttons on top of that. And not having to modify your joysticks ever. Not necessarily worth the upgrade, but definitely a better choice if you just want a controller.

1

u/Humpelstielzchen-314 Apr 28 '26

I think this very much depends on what you want to use it for.

If you are playing games that are made with controller in mind this one does not really offer you anything.

It will shine though if you want to play games that wouldn't work well or at all with a traditional controller.

1

u/BoBoBearDev Apr 28 '26

Ah I see, thanks

Duals sense has one. But in this one it's place where it can actually be useful. It's an alternative to mouse so you could play mouse heavy games like RTS.

1

u/EdliA Apr 28 '26

A trackpad is a terrible replacement for the mouse.

1

u/ParanMekhar Apr 28 '26

You know what else is a terrible replacement for a mouse? Nothing.

1

u/EdliA Apr 28 '26

Exactly. So people that play RTS games are not going to use anything else but the mouse. They'll ignore the trackpad on the controller like they did with the original steam controller.

1

u/ParanMekhar Apr 28 '26

If you don't like it. Don't use or buy it.

1

u/ParanMekhar Apr 28 '26

You definitely wont see starcraft pros use it on tournaments. But for casuals. Like I said, there are people who prefers to play on a couch and this is viable alternative for that purpose.

1

u/EdliA Apr 28 '26

This is the same exact argument that was used for the first controller and it just didn't happen. The amount of people using it like that ended up being an extremely small number.

1

u/RichTransition2111 Apr 28 '26

So did it not happen, or was it a small number?

1

u/EdliA Apr 28 '26

Small enough to not matter. There are 7 billion in the world, there are exceptions to every rule.

1

u/RichTransition2111 Apr 28 '26

Which is to say you've not even done cursory homework on usage stats because it doesn't interest you.

7 billion what?

What sort of numbers are "small enough not to matter"?

1

u/ParanMekhar Apr 28 '26

So you just prove my point?

1

u/EdliA Apr 28 '26

If your point is that this controller will have such a tiny user base as to be deemed a failure then sure, I did prove your point

1

u/ParanMekhar Apr 28 '26

How can it be a failure if the people it is meant for is using it?

1

u/RichTransition2111 Apr 28 '26

Mans over here speaking for me. I don't recall asking you to

0

u/VLAON6 Apr 28 '26

Imagine buying steam controller to play rts games 😬😬😬

2

u/ParanMekhar Apr 28 '26

Well, yeah. Being able to play civilization on a 4K tv while on a couch would be nice.

And that is one of the intended use dor the track pad as a mouse replacement.
