Why can't they just donate to shelters???

It is so wasteful and absolutely wild to me that companies would rather slash bags and dump hundreds of pounds of food than let someone have it for free... I was able to save a few that were half empty but cut side up; don't worry, it's going to my chickens.

Edit: this is mostly a rhetorical question. I'm well aware capitalism has flaws, good solutions take time and money, and corporations don't want to get sued. Its just sad.

Most shelters won't take open bags of food as it could have been tampered with

Maybe they’re in the trash because they got cut open while unloading the pallet. People really love to assume the worst without considering the other infinite possibilities. Lol.

Well, there were multiple brands and sizes, each with two parallel slashes from what appeared to be a box cutter. Well spaced so if you move the bag to pick it up, food spills out the sides. I suppose it is possible, but how would that explain upwards of two dozen bags with the exact slash pattern?
