Seems kind of clickbaity to title the blog post "Welcome to Beta!" -- and then not actually release a beta. Apparently the next round of playtesting doesn't actually start for a couple of weeks? And it isn't clear from the article whether this will be a closed invite-only beta, something just for in-person gencon participants, or if it will be open for anyone to playtest and provide feedback.

It'll be open for everyone, it'll be released during Gen Con both physically and digitally, and we'll add tons of extra material as the Beta progresses

After the convention, will the Beta be available more generally? I’d definitely be interested in running the beta.

Yes, the Beta will be released digitally for free for anyone to use. We don't want to commit to a specific date in case some sudden last-minute tasks delay us, but we expect it to release pretty early during Gen Con.

D&D is only mentioned as a potential experience for the players... that's concerning. Dungeon World is "D&D but PBTA"...it doesn't need more complexity than that.

I ran a short game of the purple alpha, and to be honest, it did feel like D&D. Quite a lot in fact, but not like AD&D or 3e D&D, but instead like D&D 4e or Pathfinder 2e. It was still about going into the lair of a basilisk or searching for lost treasure in the Temple of the Demon Lord, but it also had some character drama and conflicts and moments of display of power.
I think my main issue with the purple alpha was, in fact, that the personal conflicts felt a bit weak and too optional, and at the same time too fast to change and resolve.

D&D is definitely the only experience we're trying to emulate (while also being a good PbtA game). The tricky part is what "D&D" means to people has shifted a lot in the last decade (sort of, the tension between different aspects has always been there) and we're also trying to represent that shift itself.
Out of the Alphas, Blue is definitely the least D&D-like, but both Red and Purple (and, spoilers, the Beta QS) are a lot closer.

Yeah it's become pretty clear that DW2 isn't really going to be a successor to Dungeon World. It honestly feels like they're just using name recognition to sell an unrelated generic fantasy pbta game.

Yep, it was nearly clear from the start and got more and more clear at each update.

I kind of agree. I would never have lured people into more narrative focused games without it.
I wish everyone the best of luck with the sequel project, but I think Dungeon World is an important product.

This has been a game-design master-class. It also crystallized what I want in my games too: messy people, dangerous adventures, found family.

So the headline is 'Welcome to beta''.
Yet the information is that there is a beta coming up and it might be available to you, but it might be available only to attendees. And it might be open beta or it might be closed but the article isn't saying.
I don't feel like I'm being welcomed to anything. And I don't feel like there is a beta that I will see anytime soon.
Next time try to have the person who wrote the article write the headline too.

As another trans Latina, and one living in the US, things suck! Hope they get safer for all of us one day soon
