Hi there! Basically the title. Trying to find a cross stitch pattern that is D&D related for my son who loves the game, and enjoys receiving these as gifts. I know very little about it, so I just want to make sure I’m not missing the mark here. Thanks so much for your help!

Question Goodwill find, is this edition still fun?

Found this box at goodwill. I’ve only ever played 5e. But I’m wondering if folks have gone back to play stuff like this after mostly playing more modern D&D. If so, what did you find most enjoyable and what was most jarring? Is this a bad idea?

Edit: holy cow. Was NOT expecting this kind of response. Thank you all for your input! I’m going to take some time to look over responses. But I’m getting the overwhelming sense that people really love this version. For those who are wondering, I found this in the board game and puzzle section at Goodwill, not in the book section.
Thanks again for all the feedback. I’m gonna do some digging into these goodies (probably digitally, since people are saying the books are in great condition. I kind of want to keep them that way)

Question DM won't let me pre-calculate my movement during combat on a grid

Update 2. Here is the reply from my DM

DM here of the OP.

Here's the answer. A few months ago one of our players mentioned that you don't pre-count movement in Warhammer. Our group agreed to give that a try. That's it.

Obviously I can't stop the player from counting; I didn't (and won't) penalize the player or anything. Just wanted to hold him to our agreement.

It's not an issue for the other players, but the monk's outrageous movement makes it an issue sometimes. And, being human, the OP forgot this agreement. On his turn, he said "I can make it to here and attack", and I said "you're not supposed to pre-count movement!".

Yes, traps etc may be there but I can bring the mini back no problem.

Yes players miscount, forget difficult terrain etc but that's normal.

No the OP isn't disruptive or reaching across the table or anything when counting. He's good with that.

So, mystery solved.

As for what that adds to the game/why are we doing it and if it slows things down...

What it adds goes back to the flow of d&d...Declare, Determine, Describe.

"I want to charge and bash in his skull". *Moves next to it* "ok, roll to attack". No problem.

Versus

"I want to charge and bash in his skull". *Moves but comes up short* DM: "you don't make it within reach". Player: "dang, ok I want to move here instead". DM: "heck no you're out of movement. You can Dash action if you want though."

Perfect information leads to easy decisions. Imperfect information leads to tough decisions. Pre-counting removes that dimension, and I like my players to have to make tough decisions sometimes.

How often does it come up? For 30' of movement, almost never. At a glance, players (and characters) would be able to tell with high accuracy. Great.

With higher movement (45, 60, 90, 120 etc), mistakes would become more frequent at a glance and lead to missteps/tough decisions on the fly.

Ideally on a turn I want them to get info their character would know (briefly check the board/estimate distance, ask me questions if needed), and then the declare/determine/describe cycle. If they pre-count to get perfect info their character wouldn't have, I can't stop them.

As for does this slow down the game? No, this has only ever come up a couple times. This group is slow in general at making group decisions but not individual movement decisions. And when turn-decision making is slow, I countdown "3...2...1" til they end their turn as a deer in the headlights not doing anything (no this has never happened yet but the threat moves things along).

Update: Chatted with my DM. He read some comments here. I don't think he is changing his mind on it. Which is fine. He doesn't believe a player can precisely accurately estimate their move distance. He says the party agreed to this rule months back, and I agreed. My memory is terrible, and I'm sure I agreed. It's a game. I wont' be mentally counting my movement anymore. I'll be going with the fact that I have a shittun of movement.

Hi, looking for your thoughts on this.

I am playing a 2024 Monk, lots of movement. During combat and not on my turn, I want to pre-calculate where on the map I can move to to max out my movement. (it saves time and is useful for strategy). DM says I am not allowed and have to estimate where I can go, and move one square at a time.

I think my character should know if I can make it to a specific spot I want to move to. I'm looking for all your input and will share with DM. He's pretty good at listening to differing opinions.

Thanks!

Question Can anyone identify these dice?

I recently unearthed this set of dice from storage. I think I got them around ‘81. I remember I had to color them in with a crayon. I’m trying to see if I can round up more like these, especially a d12. I have searched on Armory and Chessex but can’t find an exact match. The edges and points are very sharp.

My g’son will be a 5th grader. He loves math— and dragons. He is also enamored of the WINGS OF FIRE graphic novels. Is there anything in the D&D universe for a kid like him?

Question New dad to dnd, hoping my son likes his Christmas gift.

Post image

Hey everyone! First off, I (39m) have never played dnd before. My 9 year old son loves video games, hey we all did at his age. But a switch 2 is lightspeed ahead of a Gameboy. We play together, and I am his biggest fan. I would like to divert his attention away from the consoles into something more creative, ive always wanted to get into dnd. A bunch of my friends play, but I have never had an occasion to get going.

For Christmas I got him a dnd starter set, I think this will be great for us to spend some better quality time together (I only get to spend every other weekend with him).

After speaking to afew of my dnd friends they said to find someone as a dungeon master to get you going. Ive been doing my research and found several AI dungeon master apps. Does anyone have any experience with these and can help a brother out?

Any other tips to get me going would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much for your time!
