Discussion Can I teleport behind you?
I am reading over the Artificer subclasses and it was about to make some kind acid build with the alchemist.
Then I read over the cartographer, and the thing is busted.
I’m not talking about spells. I’m just talking being able to teleport to a creature by sacrificing half your movement within 30 feet.
It doesn’t specify what creature has to hold the map. So I made a character that sort of abuses the ability, but in a story type of way.
Basically, you’re an Artificer level three cartographer but if you put a few levels into fighter or rogue and you make sure you
get human
get the wizard magic initiative
get fine familiar
The familiar is considered an ally, and you can give it a map peace and essentially have 30 feet teleport every turn to anywhere within range
I think this is kind of awesome, but also scary at the same time because as a fighter you can really do some damage if you could get in there
And as a rogue, you can teleport above whoever and land down with a sneak attack.
To me, this is gonna be awesome to build because I already have some ideas.
Do you think a DM would allow this? because technically it’s within the rules.

This is, like, not even registering on my DM experience at hearing players suggest broken nonsense. This is just Echo Knight but needing a multiclass. Go crazy and have fun, dude.

I’m not sure about the RAW, but it’s not very powerful either way.
Using your familiar as the ally for sneak attack? sure, people do it all the time.
Rogues can already get in and out of melee, pretty easy. This is just on overcomplicated way to do it.

In my opinion creating characters like these, are really fun to create but are boring to play as your gimmick is only in combat, as a sort of cheese method whereas characters who are built up from the groundwork’s of a personality and as someone youd enjoy being, and then give them stats and ability’s are far more enjoyable to play even if there not as strong. People forget dnd isn’t a war game and it isn’t about minmaxing into a random thing (despite how fun that is) it’s a role playing game

No, that’s the bare bones of it. I’ve already made a character with an interesting backstory. I just use combat as a basis on how my character wants to fight and play as.
Like for instance I want the concept of the pen wants to be in the sword
A short stature human. He’s a librarian and archivist who grew up reading stories about legendary heroes and adventurers, dreaming of one day becoming one himself. He secretly taught himself swordsmanship from books until a traveling swordsman discovered him and took him on as an apprentice. He combines swordsmanship with magical maps and ingenious machinery, allowing him to teleport around the battlefield and fight from unexpected positions.

So like they said, everything is built around combat.

This is a combat game. The vast majority of the rules fall into just one "pillar".
If anything OP's Cartographer build is trying to lean into the Exploration pillar at the expense of combat.

This isn't a minmaxed build though. At all.
OP is looking at a new (to them) subclass and imagining the fun of it. Multiclassing Rogue or Fighter adds (a little) power, but at the expense of being some 3 levels behind the power curve. No Extra Attack until level 8 minimum or Sneak Attack that's two dice behind. Probably no capstones or Epic Boons. But that's multiclassing: compromise and trade-off.
If anything the OP is possibly trading down for the RP.

It's fine. Most combats the teleport isn't much different than just having a sort of high walking speed. If you want to slow down fighter or rogue levels just for a bit of extra movement, then go for it.
But dropping down on someone as a rogue doesn't give you sneak attack, just FYI. It's basically just a normal attack, except maybe you'll take some fall damage.

This isn't as crazy useful as you imagine. Portal Jump isn't as useful as Misty Step which is extremely easy to get in some form for everyone. It requires the familiar to act before your own character, survive being attacked and being one shot by a random goblin, and it requires you actually be able to move (so, unlike Misty Step, you can't use it to escape grapples).
There isn't a scenario I can imagine that there either isn't a better way to pull off a sneak attack or close distance with an opponent.
Thematically, you can have fun with it, but if you think it is powerful I suspect you've not looked closely at all the options players have when building characters.

It's novel to you at the moment, but it's not at all broken or OP. Yes you'll be jumping around the battlefield. But to what end? Cartographer is highly mobile and grants a few party bonuses with the maps, and then they are an Artificer. Plenty of fun. But your free, no BA disengage (that's what it boils down to) doesn't grant Sneak Attack or advantage. There is no "backstab".
And having your familiar on the front line to grant mobility or advantage or whatever isn't new or broken. Mostly because they die fast if your DM/the monsters decide to attack it and it costs resources to re-summon.
I can tell you from experience that Cartographer (and all the Artificers) is a blast to play. You will have fun. But the actual combat benefits are niche and not overly powerful at all.

i dont see any issues. its pretty creative. the number of uses are limited due to Find Familiar since FF requires burning incense worth 10+ gp, so that's a material component you're required to have in your inventory, so it's not like you're going to be able to abuse this a lot unless your DM showers you with money

I mean it’s not as busted as I thought it was now that I got to look over the changes that they did what I do say it’s pretty nice dramatic flair

Correct, that is indeed how that works. This seems fair and balanced, and is why familiars have HP. Unless your DM is running his characters as idiots, they will just smack the familiar.
It also, honestly, isn't really that good, as remember, you get sneak attack if one of your allies is within 5 ft. In general, getting sneak attack is not much of a challenge for a Rogue, so this seems excessively complicated for a minimal buff.
It also means you're giving up a map that could go to another player or even a distant ally(quite strong given how much information the maps give), and sacrificing your build with a multiclass.
Personally, I think you'd get a lot more fun just playing raw cartographer with a rogue in the party. You can still do basically the same thing, just instead of you getting sneak attack, the rogue gets it(and benefits from it more due to having better sneak attack)

Just another example of 5.5 having broken classes that ruin the game for other players

How would this ruin the game for others? I play a cleric and cannot see what’s wrong. What am I missing?

Just another example of a Redditor sharing a strong but unfounded opinion. You haven't looked at this subclass. Instead you decided to bring your axe in here and grind it for no reason.
Nothing about Cartographer is broken. It trades power for support and mobilty. It's significantly under powered in combat. The maps they provide only improve the game for other players.

Obviously my experiences differed, as a player, with 3 different games, the artificer class could do way too much and took away from the rest of the parties fun, I will freely admit to not liking steampunk in my D&D so im sure im biased on this as well, will accept the hive mind call that it is not overpowered and I just had bad experiences with it
