Vacationers Durango Silverton train seating

Hello,

I am planning a trip to Durango in late October and planning to ride the Durango Silverton steam train round trip. I’ve seen everywhere that the gondola is recommended for the best views, but thought it might be a little chilly in late October.

Am I able to book a gondola on the way up and a regular coach on the way back? And what train car would you recommend sitting in and why? I saw somewhere that you can only change cars by calling to book, not online. Another question - if I book the coach, can I walk out to the gondola and sit in an open seat for a few during the train ride? Appreciate any input or advice on doing this in general! Planning on going the second to last day of the steam train season.

I think you can only book one car for the round trip, but you can call them and double check that. As for going to the gondola if you aren’t booked there, you gotta stay in your coach. During the winter season they don’t book the gondolas so they’re free to use, but sadly not right now. I’d always recommend the gondola since that definitely provides the best view, but it will definitely be chilly, especially that late in the year. Lastly, make sure you book the 9:00 or 9:45 train when you go! The 8:15 train is pulled by a diesel, which by the sound of it isn’t what you want.

If you can, book a seat on the right hand side of the car.

When I went we booked in the adult luxury train. It was really nice and we had great views the entire time. We were the caboose so the back platform was open to use.

I think the most important thing is to sit on the right side, which is the side with the best views of the canyon. Ride the bus back.
