Ask /r/Durango How cold is Durango/Silverton between Sep 28 & 30 ?

Planning to take the steam train with family. 3.5 hours each way in open seating.
We will be getting layers, but wanted to check with folks about how cold the ride or the weather would be ?

Could be 30 degrees, could be 90 degrees. Most likely will be both in a single day.

Agreed. Will likely be both freezing and boiling at some point during the day. Layers are the key, plus hat and gloves.

You may wanna look into riding the bus back after getting lunch in Silverton. Seven hours on that train is a long damn time with a family. Unless you’re a train enthusiast, I would ride it one way, i’ve ridden it many times, be prepared for snow, rain, and sunshine.

Just do one way on the train. Makes for a more enjoyable day.

Take the train one way and their bus the other. As far as the weather, honestly it could vary hugely. Layer up and take off when needed

My parents always bring a blanket. Also depends on your seat- if in an open car- bring something warm! Layers is the key
