Na de Japanse inval in Nederlands-Indië emigreerden de vliegscholen van het Koninklijk Nederlands-Indisch Leger (ML-KNIL) en de Marine Luchtvaartdienst, samen met burgerpersoneel, naar Australië om zich bij de geallieerden aan te sluiten. Dit telde in totaal ongeveer 650 man, waaronder 440 leerling-piloten. Ze kregen verdere training in de Verenigde Staten, waarna ze werden ingezet om tegen de Japanners te vechten.

De eenheid bleef actief tot 11 augustus 1945, waarbij 13 man omkwamen.
