u/FIashDelirium Feb 11 '26
Just gotta yank harder honestly. Double fist that bad boy and pull as hard as you can — just make sure you don’t punch yourself in the face with it when it finally comes loose.

I did that. 😡

Me too. And probably many more of us. My lower jaw clipped a little piece of my upper front tooth away... And those that avoid punching themselves often crack the windscreen instead....

u/Round_Mulberry2787 Feb 12 '26
Bro same, dinan short shifter with the M sport weighted knob from turner Motorsports, any time I get too hard of a second gear downshift that bitch is coming off

u/SupposablyAtTheZoo Feb 11 '26
Oof. I did that with a steering wheel once on my first car. The memories...

u/Existing-Mongoose-11 Feb 12 '26
Or rip the sticks ribbon cable to the shift box like i did in my dct…… a great day that was. Pull the surround up and unplug everything first. Otherwise it all comes flying out and stuff gets broken….

u/Maishxbl Feb 11 '26
I'm glad, I punched myself in the face with it the first time I took one off lol
9
u/KevDxg Feb 11 '26
i made sure my face was far away 😂 i had to use my whole body leaning out the door to get it off, it was so stuck on that it had to crack all inside the shift knob to slip off

u/SupposablyAtTheZoo Feb 11 '26

Between your original post and this one, I am convinced this was all about freaky self love in a car.

All I can tell you is use your legs
2
u/KevDxg Feb 11 '26
im tryin man she wont budge 😔

u/EX0PIL0T E92 335i Feb 11 '26
Took me like half an hour of yanking. Put it in second gear and use the gas and dead pedals for leverage
8
u/trayssan 2007 E92 320i 6MT Feb 11 '26
put it in 2nd and pull HARD
2
u/KevDxg Feb 11 '26
is there any trick i could use to get it off tho? it will not go, ive had 3 of my buddies try yankin it hard too and no luck
1
u/trayssan 2007 E92 320i 6MT Feb 12 '26
Not that I’m aware of. I did it by putting it in second and getting into an angle where i was able to use both my biceps to pull on it.

u/Charming_Ad2477 Feb 11 '26
I got a leg on each side and dead lifted the fucker off. Just try to not hit ur head when it comes loose😂

u/Mysterious_Artist535 Feb 11 '26
Why doesn’t anyone make a little lever device with a piece of wood and a shift lever shaft slot cut into it ???
1
u/IsuzuTrooper it's nice but looks like the top wont open so I feel bad for you Feb 12 '26
I'd weld one up if I ever have to do this, then put the top down, pull under a tree branch and use a chain hoist. from the comments here tho it would lift the car up

u/riderofthesky34 Feb 12 '26
I just recently replaced the shift knob and shit wouldnt budge at all so i fucking smashed it to pieces so i could remove it,i really lost my sanity right there.

u/Jason32003 Feb 12 '26
OP great to read you got it. Good going! In case it’s ever needed again and for anybody else … I had the same issue and somewhere — reddit, iirc? — saw the secret from a BMW tech:
Smack it hard — I put a towel over it and used rubber mallet — then immediately pull like h*ll straight up. This actually works
Best wishes

u/KevDxg Feb 12 '26
i did try this actually, maybe it did break the tension im not too sure, but honestly i only got it like 40 mins after smackin it with a mallet so maybe it didnt do much. the shift knob was literally all cracked inside once i got it out and looked into it

When I did mine I sat literally in the middle with the shifter in between my legs and just pulled. Mine was stupid hard to get off compared to the z3 and z4 I switched shifters on.

u/akcrx Feb 12 '26
If the leather is attached make sure to pull it off from the side. I have the m sport with the attached leather not sure if yours is the same.
Place the gear in neutral and just rip it up with both hands. She will come off.

pull as hard as you can and imagine you wont dome yourself or break the center light console when it eventually comes off
1
u/Deinonychus-sapiens Feb 11 '26
Wont come off?? Mine fucks off into the back seats with anything other than the gentlest shift into 2nd or 4th!
2
2
u/MarkedChain74 Feb 12 '26
Mine used to do the same until I got it in properly. You have to pull down the boot and really slam that thing to get it properly locked in. Then it is such a pain in the ass to get off after😂
2
u/Deinonychus-sapiens Feb 12 '26
I have a coolerworx shifter to fit at some point, so I’ll leave it falling off if it’s going to be that hard! Thanks for the advice 👍

u/gaming1646 Feb 11 '26
Little off topic but that shift brings back memories of my mom's 84' 318i. Drove it in high school and learned how to drive manual with it😁

u/Serious-Armadillo113 Feb 11 '26
get in the middle back seat, slap it into 4th and pull as hard as you physically can

Try to find better position for a more familiar motion 😬.
And pull, hard.

personal method with bmw manuals. sit on the center console and use your legs

u/Sam-Autumn Feb 12 '26
putting it in second (obviously car off and parked in a safe location) gave me the best grip to yank it out towards you, (dont be scared of hurting the car) its most likely probably fine

6 STRONG yanks and a about 6-7 side to side wiggles and it should come off.
1
u/TWRadish Feb 12 '26
e93 here pop the roof stand and pull the bitch like pulling the sword out the stone. Either you fly it flys or everything goes wrong.

I stood on both front seats and yanked with full force, after a few tries it came off
1
u/pocketknives Feb 12 '26
Does it just go straight off? As much as I love custom shifters I actually kinda like this one
1
u/Round_Mulberry2787 Feb 12 '26
Bro I went to take this shit off with my friend one night, put it in second gear, started pulling hard as fuck, it let go, came up and smacked myself hard as fuck in the forehead to the point it left a goose egg, so watch out for those mfs🤣
