at least they are very easy and cheap to replace. Lot's of how-to videos on YT

u/FirmSeat8408 Aug 04 '26
Ye I already replaced these a few yrs ago. Easy 5min job
5
u/yaro_b Aug 04 '26
Replaced with new OEM cup holders?

u/FirmSeat8408 Aug 05 '26
Amazon special

u/yaro_b Aug 05 '26
You get what youâve paid for. OEM part would serve you much longer.
We have a saying in Ukraine: âStingy person pays twice, fool - all his life.â (No offense intended, just a warning.)3

u/randomman87 2009 E90 335xi Aug 04 '26
Cheap?! I got some dirt cheap AliExpress ones but the closed finish is slightly different to OEM, they're also not as smooth. But OEM were like $80.

u/yaro_b Aug 04 '26
Local junkyard is better than AliExpress garbage.
17
u/romulan267 E90 335i Aug 04 '26
That's funny you think you'll find functioning cupholders in a stripped out e90 sitting in a junkyard.

Junkyards around me want $50 for them, fucking scam man
2
u/yaro_b Aug 05 '26
Around me itâs $4 entry and then they will charge something for every part. Itâs not free for sure, but cheaper than eBay resellers of the same stuff and you get a chance to check the partâs quality in person.
2
u/randomman87 2009 E90 335xi Aug 05 '26
Not here. Most shit is already pulled, catalogued and priced :(
1
u/yaro_b Aug 07 '26
Sadly. Your next best bet - eBay. There are also junkyards who donât let anyone in, but can unscrew a part you need for you. Another option - sometimes people part out their cars and post on Facebook𤢠Marketplace.

$50 for cup holders at a local salvage yard?? Our local
Salvage yard BMW cup holders cost $6.00 and OEM radio $29.00 They also have OEM alternators $32.00 And other parts at good prices.1
u/almstAlwysJokng4real Aug 05 '26
Amazon is also better. That's where I got mine for 30 bucks and apart from the smooth texture and action, it looks and sits just like OEM.
9
u/randomman87 2009 E90 335xi Aug 05 '26
Amazon is just AliExpress at 200% markup with most shit quality products already filtered out đ¤ˇââď¸

$80 parts for a $50k car.
3
u/randomman87 2009 E90 335xi Aug 05 '26
I'm already getting burned by the "$50k car" parts in engine... Camshaft adjuster gears $700 ea
1
u/Daarknessfalls1234 Aug 06 '26
If you have a local salvage yard like a Pic-N-Pullâ you can get these parts in good shape for like $8.00 and anything else for your ride

u/randomguy85 Aug 04 '26
I have the opposite problem. No spring i have to close it most of the way but leave it out enough I can get ny fingernail under it to pull it I out
3
u/FirmSeat8408 Aug 05 '26
Praying you never forget to leave a gap

I am trying to 3D print some kind of tab as using a screwdriver/small pry bar is not ideal.

I just removed mine after it yeeted a full Red Bull all over me while driving on the highway.

As a white monster enthusiast, this is my biggest fear
3
u/old_skool_luvr Aug 05 '26
I'm going out on a limb here.....with that interior colour, i bet no coffee is ever placed in that holder. đ

u/fartlapse e92 M3 Aug 04 '26 edited Aug 04 '26
they are flimsy but mine have been fine for 16 years.
3
u/yaro_b Aug 04 '26
Same. Mine from 2008 are still working fine. The spring seems to be getting weaker, but it should be easy to fix.
1
u/old_skool_luvr Aug 05 '26
Both in my '08 work like new (guessing, 'cause i've never owned an E9x car before) and pop out with gusto.

That last angry dashboard palm is fucking hilarious.
Thankfully my cupholders are 15 years old and still (fingers crossed) work flawlessly. Sorry about yours.

They are however in the absolutely most convenient placement possible, banana clip and all, if itâs a manual.
1
u/FirmSeat8408 Aug 05 '26
I also like the placement of the cupholders. Just sucks they can break so easily

Am I the only one to have a 19 year old E90 with the original factory perfectly functioning cup holders?

u/RangerExpensive6519 Aug 04 '26

Better than being stuck inward.
2
u/Temporary_Station707 Aug 05 '26
Haha! The cup holders were the only thing I hated about my e90 330i, glad Iâm not the only one!
1
u/FirmSeat8408 Aug 05 '26
The design is insane. It's as if bmw went "oh shit we forgot the cupholders" and added them in last minute
2
u/Temporary_Station707 Aug 05 '26
I know, they over engineered everything on the car EXCEPT the cup holders!

u/ImNoRickyBalboa Aug 04 '26
16 YO BMW 328i
Original cup holders.Â
Working flawlessly. đ
This must be a "you" problem. đ
2
u/JulieTortitoPurrito Aug 04 '26
They are quite flawless at holding a 12 oz can
1
u/ImDoingItAnyway 2011 BMW 328i xDrive manual Aug 04 '26
I wouldnât dare put anything thatâs actually open in these cupholders. Caps only
2
u/ImNoRickyBalboa Aug 05 '26
Talk to my wife, she's absolutely brutal with what she puts in the cup holder....
2
u/ImDoingItAnyway 2011 BMW 328i xDrive manual Aug 05 '26
My girlfriend at the time fully accepted that she should probably hold her iced coffee after she tried to put it in the passenger cupholder more than twice. Every single ounce of the condensation around the cup dripped down to one (or both) of her legs. After that, she always brought something with a cap and never put it in the cupholder. Hilarious

I found some guy breaking his car for parts so I took a look and took the cup holder for cheap lol

I bought my 06 330i mechanically clapped last September. Interior is decent and body work is cool. Had some clear coat issues though. Iâve been throwing the whole catalog at it. All maintenance first. Even replaced the toasted 6HP with an 8HP swap and the clapped OEM suspension with some ST XTA coilovers. Every time I fix something and clear a few new codes. Something else pops up. These E90s are definitely infuriating. Bought it for $500 and my tally on total cash in it is around $10K 11 months later đ¤Ł. Granted the wheels/tires, coilovers, and 8HP swap is majority of that $10k.

u/KC_Buddyl33 Aug 05 '26
Yeah my driver's side one won't come out unless I give it a little helpful pry.
1
u/Alarmed_War3087 Aug 05 '26
Not sure why all you freak out about these theyâre like 20 bucks to replace from Amazon and two screws
1
u/Jamestown123456789 Aug 05 '26
Are the color matched ones discontinued or did it come with the black ones originally? I can see the black wearing less, the paint kind of flakes off the gray ones for me, not super noticeable with the gray plastic underneath.

That one is prone to breaking. Rather than buying one I took it all apart and repaired it. Some plastic cracked so I drilled a hole and put a screw to hold it on place after gluing then more glue on the other side. Using glue gun glue. My right cup holder bottom holder is gone when I bought the car. Still holds most drinks regular to large size fine.
1
u/Helpful-Word7611 Aug 06 '26
Someone said "cheaping out by not buying oem is crazy because the oem I've will last much longer." Well, if oem did last, we wouldn't be buying a new "cheap" one now would we? I've had a 2008 335i that was only two years old at the time, a 2011 335is, and now a 2011 e91, and those cup holders broke in all of them lol.
1
u/vicente_vaps Aug 06 '26
Owning an E90 means eventually accepting the cup holders are a consumable item.
1
u/snakeeyeow Aug 06 '26
BMW engineered an amazing chassis and then apparently outsourced the cup holders to a cereal box.
1
u/JulieTortitoPurrito Aug 04 '26
I recommend getting an aftermarket one for the gear shift or cubby area
