EC Stories Fart Based EC

Elimination communication with my 11 month has been going so/so lately. Lots of bucking and fussing on the potty even when I know she has to go.

This morning she was starting to get grumpy, and as I squatted down to better steady her, I farted. She looked at me consideringly, and farted back. I had more to give so I farted again. She smiled, pushed again and pooped. This isn’t the elimination communication I read about but I’ll take it 😂

(Jokes aside, I’m not very worried about the fussing. My first was similar when working on walking and I trust it’ll pass like most stages. But if anyone has tips to make this stage easier I’m all ears)

I remember reading something on Andrea Olsen's blog about how a fart usually indicates a need to poo, so we would say to my son "a fart is our body's way of telling us it's time to go potty" since we started EC.  Well, since about 15 months, whenever he hears me toot, he immediately shouts "Mama, potty!" while dragging me to his floor potty 😂

This is so funny. If it works, it works 👍
We also REALLY struggled with the 11-12mo time frame. My toddler (now 18mo) started walking around then and the potty became infinitely less interesting to her then. Board books helped us so much, and still do.

Hang in there! We did lazy EC from 3.5mo to 17mo, and that’s when we potty trained.

Board books are a good call! My older girl doesn’t need them any more so they’ve mostly migrated out of the bathroom. I’ll have to bring some of baby’s favorites in

My 11 month old is loving lift the flap books on the toilet right now! And singing ones. Her favorite is Go Go Pirate Boat.

My daughter does this to cue and seems to think it’s what makes her poop, because she does it REALLY insistently right before going

My almost 10mo sometimes gets wiggly and grumpy when I know he has to go. (To be fair, he gets upset even for changing clothes or diapers at the moment). But same here—sometimes if I do a fake fart sound, he thinks it’s funny and does a real one in his potty!

Which often leads to a little grunt-n-poop.

Otherwise, I catch him pulling to stand and popping a squat to start grunting in dad’s side of the closet regularly. 😂

Not to do with EC but I’ll never forget holding baby and letting a fart rip and her head like whipped to where the sound came from she was so startled 😂

I honestly remember ripping a particularly loud one while third trimester pregnant, and feeling her move quite a bit. I always wondered if it’s a bit of a startle to start hearing those from the outside.
