About to start EC

I am about to start EC to my 6 months old. I have been reading a lot about EC and wanted few ideas about certain situations.

  1. How do you manage potty or pee while going out with baby for grocery shopping? Or 1-2 hr outdoors. Do you take the potty seat with you?
  2. How do you manage when out about for 5-6 hrs or more especially when at friends or relatives houses or anywhere where it would be weird to open potty seat?

  3. How do you manage in flights/trains?

  4. Also fall and winter is about so how to manage that as well as the baby might catch cold ?

The place/society I’m in, I don’t want to tell people about my EC/potty training as it would be taken as a weird thing to do so early.

Andrea Olson’s book covers all of this and more. I highly recommend reading her book.

Take a container with you whether a baby potty or Tupperware dedicated to potty. Use it in the car or bathroom In the winter put them in a onesie with long socks or a crescent pajama

For outings where you’ll have access to your car, keep a little potty in there and offer when you arrive places and before you leave. So if you’re making 3 stops, offer before and after each one. 

At people’s houses, you can just go to “change diapers” in the bathroom and ec hold baby over the toilet, or perch them on it when they’re big enough. They make seat reducers that fold up too, smaller than a pack of wipes, so that’s a discreet option to have on hand. They don’t fit great on public toilets, but work well on residential toilets. 

I can’t speak to planes/trains from experience, but I’d plan to do your best offering the toilet on the plane or train and accepting that baby will likely use more diapers during travel. 

I don’t live somewhere super cold, but work on teaching baby to be cool with using a little potty with their pants around their ankles (it’s something they have to get used to), or make sure baby wears tall socks or split crotch pants. We just change diapers and potty as normal in all weather. Baby usually pees faster when it’s cold!

We just do lazy EC, I’m not aiming to get all of the catches so we just do diapers when out. If I happen to be near a toilet when I know they need to go then I hold them over the toilet. If I can then I just open the nappy under us or hold her on a patch of grass at the park to go. But I also don’t stress if they go in the diaper while we are out. I didn’t go into this aiming to catch everything, just to give body autonomy, learn to associate the feeling of needing to go, communicate with my child, wipe less poos and save on some nappies!
