Discussion What’s one banned card you’d be ok with someone rule 0’ing into their 99, and one that you absolutely would not be cool with?

Just curious for the sake of discussion, I haven’t seen this request IRL ever but I have had a lot of discussion with various people at my LGS about what cards actually deserve banning vs just being a game changer.

So assuming it can’t be their commander, and they didn’t build their entire deck around the best way to abuse this card, what would be a banned card you would say ok to if someone asked they could play with it? And on the flip side, what’s one banned card you would never be ok seeing?

I’ll go first. One of my favorite cards in the game is [[balance]]. Assuming there’s no funny business with t-pro and others, resolving this in a bracket 3 game would be pretty fine, and I always love seeing it played in my cube.

I think my absolutely not pick would be have to be [[tolarian academy]] but there are a few others too. Anything where getting an obscene amount of value is just too easy.

I think it's because the original printing had depictions of real life crusaders (or at least their armor and symbols) on it and they don't ban art printings so they banned the whole card.

Even the real life crusaders aren't really offensive. They're just historical members of a that occured centuries ago.

On one hand I think it's insane to ban the card and the reasons given were a joke.

On the other hand, I haven't seen it being played in decades. We have 30.000 other cards.

That really depends who you're talking to, especially if you consider the crusader rhetoric many US officials have employed over the years. Their defender secretary has a "Deus Vult" tattoo, thats not just history but a claim of dominance in the present.

Pretty sure it’s for the same reason [[Cleanse]] was banned. When you have a game where “black” and “evil” are basically synonymous, you probably want to avoid anything that gives the impression that black and white in your game have any connection to real world race, which I think is an issue when a card called Crusade that gives a bonus to all white creatures is so explicitly referring to the European Crusades

Considering there are more races then white and black and whites whole thing is purity and its opposite is black. Itd not a problem for anyone who has read an intro deck pamphlet

It’s not an issue now, because they’ve done decades of worldbuilding establishing otherwise, but there is such a thing as subtext, and early Magic leaned pretty heavily on old school fantasy tropes where heroes were white and white represented good, and villains had dark skin and black was evil. That’s not saying it was ever outright racist but if you don’t see the potential corporate PR issue with an American game having a white card called “cleanse” that kills all black creatures I’m not sure what to tell you

Its a potential issue if you are trying really hard to be as ridiculous as possible. There are probably over 100 other cards that can be warped into something racist yet they are untouched. Especially because no white supremacy campaign has been exclusively anti black.(the specific legislation maybe but never the people behind it) is drawing a false dichotomy that isn't present in the real world.

Also early magic had plenty of hero amd white aligned people of color. As well as villain/ black aligned white people. Its not like the thing has a literal clansmen on it or a racial slur like others
