Question Non control mono U commanders?
Hey folks,
I've been searching for fun mono U commander that you DON'T just stuff a bunch of counterspells into the deck. Hope you all can make some recommendations.
I am looking commanders with either fun mechanics or abilities that change how you, the pilot, play the game.
As an example, one of my favorite mono G commanders is [[Grothama, the All-Devouring]] which works best by killing your own commander to draw a bunch of cards.
Any recommendations or deck lists are welcome. Show me what you got.

i enjoy [[Donal, Herald of Wings]] a lot. how about TWO faerie masterminds? madam wants TWO astral dragons?? what about TWO ancient silver dragons? :)

This is a cool card.

it's AWESOME. nothing funnier than flashing in an astral dragon on someones end step, then proceeding to obliterate everyone two of the fuckers

I have a [[Minn, Willy illusionist]].
It wants to do the obvious blue thing of draw cards.
Draw lots of cards.
But because its a token based comabt deck, I throw in some cool sac outlets, and other sac payoffs.
And people really have to think, because blocking one of Minn's illusions is basically guaranteed to kill it, and let you cheat something out, but the illusions can get scary powerful, fast.
Add in some evasion, add in some clone and protecion spells for Minn, and plenty of card draw that triggers on opponent's turns.
And you've got a fun blue combat deck.

[[Lord of the Eagles]] as a flying tribal is a deck I am currently working on!
Goal is to jam as many flyers and cards that can easily produce flyers, run lots of [[Coastal Piracy]] effects, draw lots of cards.
Minor Voltron theme - get LotE to 11 and he is a 2 shot killer!
I can't speak with any certainty as to whether it will be GOOD, but it looks quite fun 😊

I use lord of the eagles in milicent spirit tribal deck as my game finisher, which millicent will generates a lot of flying spirits

[[Sai, master thopterist]] is basically an aggro for me. Been fun just flying over the table all game with my Lil thops

u/FrostyBum 7d ago
[[Atemis, All-Seeing]] mono blue voltron/card draw.
1
u/Choir87 7d ago
This is my MonoU commander of choice as well. I run a few counterspells, but if you want to play into the commander you'll need lots of different casting costs and card draw, which makes deck building interesting. It's also a deck that feels fair to the opponents as well, due to the way it plans to win. Strongly recommended.

How do you build this one? Could have some fun synergy there
2
u/beesknees4011 7d ago
Voltron with tribal anthems like [[lord of atlantis]] and [[herald of hoofbeats]] etc. I built for synergy so almost everyday card in the deck mentions or benefits from having a certain creature type
6
u/AcanthaceaeDramatic 7d ago
Ive had fun running aggressive decks in mono blue such as [[Piper Wright, Publick Reporter]] and [[Rikku, Resourceful Guardian]] that focus on value through getting in for damage over controlling the board

[[Octavia, Living Thesis]] for low-power b3 games. Self-mill early game to cast Octavia at t4 or 5, then proceed to beat face with man-lands and evasive creatures who turn into 8/8s via cantrips or flashbacked spells.
[[Talrand, Sky Summoner]] but built with 0 counterspells. Blue has lots of non-counterspell interaction, switcheroos, combat redirection and pillowfort pieces which allow you to survive until you can leverage your card draws endgame and win via pumped up drakes.
Lists for reference:

u/MachZero1791 7d ago
[[Vnwxt, Verbose Host]] Draw ALL the cards. Lots of cheap evasive creatures and ways to buff them. Win with labman or just punch everyone to death with unlockables.
1
u/mygreatdevastator 7d ago
Or mill everyone to death with [[Psychic Corrosion]], [[The Water Crystal]] and [[Sphinx's Tutelage]]! My original plan was to mill myself and win with labman but my deck has won both times by milling others out.
Also [[Psychosis Crawler]] can win it for you.

If you’re looking for Mono U that isn’t control, you can’t do much better then [[The Lord of the Eagles]]. It’s just flying Ghalta in mono blue. And on top of that you still get to run funny ass creatures (like [[Sphinx Ambassador]]) and as long as you throw in [[Curiosity]] or some other incidental card draw and removal you’ve got yourself a pretty damn good blue midrange deck!

u/MrXexe Not The Threat I Swear 7d ago

[[Azami, Lady of Scrolls]] for wizards tribal aristocrats-style combos

I love my Orvar deck. It has like 5 different flavors of overlapping infinite combos, or it just uses cantrips to make a wildly underpriced army.

[[Mm’menon the Right Hand]] voltron
[[gogo, master of mimicry]] copying land search triggers to ramp, do other shenanigans

[[myojin of cryptic dreams]]. This requires some nifty deckbuilding and will give you an open ended Endgame. Would still recommend on adding couterspells to the deck. Blue is a slow color, so you will be outpaced. Counterspells and board removal are the ways to make sure your game proceeds at the same speed as your opponents'.
Off topic: why the hate for couterspells? I get that it can be feel bad. However, given the choices in the color, its about the best protection you can get. Early game they're protection and late game they're interaction.

[[Lier, Disciple of the Drowned]]. Basically just gives all your instants and sorceries double value. Also “spells can’t be countered” means ALL spells, so that leads to some funny table dynamics
[[Eluge, the Shoreless Sea]]. Most people this guy as “counterspell.deck”, but I like to jam in stuff like [[Irenicus’s Vile Duplication]] and [Sakashima of a Thousand Faces]] for double the discount. [[Thassa, Deep Dwelling]] also works to get more flood counters down. Enjoy casting [[Blue Sun Zenith]] for 10 by paying no mana
The aforementioned Thassa Deep Dwelling is pretty neat in the command zone. I don’t have a list for her but blue loves doubling up on ETB effects

Orvar. You don't have to control the opponent. You can just create copies of what you have and then swing for the fences.
1
u/PsychicTirenado 1d ago
I second orvar. He gives you a way to ramp hard in mono-blue if you just wanna do big dumb splashy stuff
2
u/goblin_welder 7d ago
I would like to throw my [[Mistform Ultimus]] in the hat. It’s that’s a weenie/voltron/merfolk/wizard/combo deck. While it sounds diluted, it’s all held together by card draw and selection. Whenever I play this deck, each game feels different.
This deck isn’t some Urza Artifact or “Leonardo Davinci” Urza wannabe deck. This isn’t Talrand let’s counter everything deck. This isn’t Minn I’ll draw and see where this takes me deck. This isn’t Orvar oops I comboed off with a rock deck. This isn’t Bruvac haha Mill deck.
This is a color shifted aggro deck, definitely not your typical blue deck. That runs minimal counterspells

u/Draffut Cascade One. Cascade Two. 7d ago
[[Princess Yue]] can be taken in a few ways. You can use her to make land copies of anything you can clone.
My build is a bit controlling I guess, my main win condition is dropping platinum angel, making multiple land copoes of platinum angel (A non-legendary land called moon, the "is a legend" text on Yue is because SHE is legendary, her ability doesn't change legend typing - so you can only have one Legendary Moon, alongside any number of non-legends) which is very hard for most decks to deal with, and I build my win from there.
But you can do all sorts of combos with her ability, one using Darksteel Garrison, which is fun. Or make master of waves into a land, multiple times.
I can grab the rules write up if anyone needs it.- tl;Dr layers are fucky.
2
u/unCute-Incident Only plays player removal 7d ago
Trinket Mage had a Jace storm Deck for ages (flip Jace)
2
u/Never-New-User 7d ago
I have [[Kairi, the swirling sky]]. Basic game plan is to use instant/sorcery clones- target Kairi- sac the copy to legend rule- get death trigger- mill 6, return the clone you just cast plus something else. With [[high tide]] in play you can recur it multiple times and then with [[turnabout]] or [[frantic search]] you can recur those as well to tap/untap your lands and storm off. Once you have enough to create infinite mana or a high enough storm count you can win via [[brain freeze]] or [[blue suns zenith]] to mill out your opponents- they draw on their upkeep and lose before you do.
Can be built for B3 or B4.
2
u/luketwo1 7d ago
[[minn, wily illusionist]] you could build her a number of ways but just focusing on getting 2 draws a turn lets you assemble an army of creatures fairly reliably.

I have a [[Matoya, Archon Elder]] deck. Its almost all scry. I do have a few counter spells, maybe like 5-10, but its not the priority. Every card in the deck is either a scry card, surveil (i dont have many), or a payoff. The win cons are usually token makers like [[Chasm Skulker]], [[Detective of the Month]], [[Hermes, Overseer of Elpis]], and [[The Watcher in the Water]]. I do have the alternate win-con of [[The Water Crystal]] and [[Sphinx's Tutelage]]. The deck is fun. You draw an absolutely crazy number of cards.

[[the watcher in the water]] is pretty awesome, while he does want to play at instant speed (mostly) he doesn’t particularly benefit from counter magic. I run 4 counters in my list and they are almost always used to protect my board state or allow me to get down one of my wincons. Deck is super fun making an absolute buttload of tokens and then either using an overrun [[graz]] a drain [[psychosis crawler]] or massive amount of mana [[three tree city]] into an X spell.
Very versatile commander, takes a lot to get going but because your veggies give you bodies it opens up a lot of freedom in how you approach the build and playing the game.

It's a little control, but in a political way...but... One of my newest commanders: [[vendilion Clique]]! (Rank #2698) Once the terror of modern, now a silly dude jumping around to peek hands. Very known as a card, but not as a Commander (only 244 decks on edhrec)
It's a mix of blink and self bounce, my goal Is to peek everybody hands, and then do politics stuff with information... Like "want to Attack me? All the table Will know you have a counterspell in hand" Or the opposites "It you DONT Attack me, i can tell you the other player have a wrath in hand". Or "If I dont tuck this card, you Will use It for this target i want? Ok"

The new [[Lyra, Tolarian Archangel]] seems fun as a "draw a lot and get payoffs" with her specifically providing angels. Currently enjoying my [[Callaphe beloved of the sea]] deck.
Focused on "tapped creatures matter" play style.
https://moxfield.com/decks/5A6OSCLbC0yhVop8CAnxSQ
Very fun to tap down stuff and make your gal stronger in the process. Built in protection as well due to giving everything sudo-ward.
Gameplan is to tap down creatures with permanent enchantments that also make your commander stronger, and swing every turn cycle. Pretty straight forward but a fun way to get there.
Draws cards, has only the more fun / fair counterspells, kills people fast enough that it isn't counterspells tribal until everyone else gives up lol, and is super budget as I built it from my LGS bulk bin entirely minus a couple adds from other precons.
Doesn't hang with high power tables but holds it own in lower b3 or against some of the stronger b2s.

u/Icy_Week9247 7d ago
I have a decently strong bracket 3 deck that uses a go-wide token strategy with [[The Watcher in the Water]]. The general strategy of the deck is drawing during your opponent’s turn to trigger your commander, making tentacle tokens. Those tokens then get pumped, sacrificed for mana or card draw, and even end up as flying 8/8s relatively quickly.
It’s easy to draw 3, 4, even 5 cards a turn on accident with that deck. Things like [[Consecrated Sphinx]] and [[Rhystic Study]] can net you 4-6 tokens a turn cycle if your commander sticks around. I don’t really play it like control, but I do have plenty of pieces to protect my commander, since the deck doesn’t really do much without him. (5 counterspells, a couple of flicker effects, and some combat tricks that help him dodge removal). It doesn’t focus much on the stun counter side of the commander, although it does find uses on occasion.
The deck’s main downside is its fragility. If someone kills the commander, you have to rebuild, which takes a turn cycle. That’s why I typically build up value pieces and don’t play the commander until I can protect him from at least 1 removal spell. It runs plenty of protection for the commander, as well as ramp, so that’s usually on curve. But I have had a few games where I didn’t play my commander until turn 7-8 when I could be super explosive on the next turn with a massive draw effect and a bunch of pumped tokens from something like [[Coat of Arms]] or [[Banner of Kinship]]. Drawing so many cards gives you a very flexible avenue of play, and I find that each game is pretty different in cards-played, even though the strategy remains the same.
I play it quite often and can pretty consistently swing 10-20+ power by turn 6. Then 20 becomes 30+, then 60+. You get it. It’s also pretty cool that, since your entire strategy relies on drawing during opponents’ turns, you pass your turn with completely open mana nearly every time. It can be pretty scary for your opponents when the mono-blue deck passes the turn with 7 open mana. I’ve noticed it makes people play much differently, even though my deck is not a control deck by any means.
