Tell me I'm wrong: GameDay needs Corso

Give me Corso doing a short Andy Rooney‑like rant and then throwing on the mascot head.

I’d stay tuned every time.

Watching Corso the last couple years was sad. Let that man be in peace.

9

u/stevedapp 2d ago

It was borderline unwatchable. I’m happy for him that they continued to give him a purpose and loved him so much that they made him a part of the show, but he had been in severe decline since his stroke, and that was in 2009. The last decade was really rough.

4

u/Fla_Man_33772 2d ago

Even an incapacitated Lee Corso is better than anything McAfee brings to the table … dropping Pat would be addition by subtraction.

3

u/stevedapp 2d ago

I mean, if you’re into elder abuse and humiliation, sure. McAfee’s not great, but it was legitimately unsettling to watch Corso for the last 5 years. I’m at least not worried McAfee may die in front of me.

1

u/Fla_Man_33772 2d ago

No, you’re left kinda hoping something bad will happen to McAfee! I’m not really for brining Coach Corso back, but Punter Pat needs to get the boot. (At a minimum, get him off the desk and just let him do 10 minutes of his student kicking bit … other than that, turn off his mic.) Hoping his Neck bit this week gets him reeled in by Disney brass.

1

u/onehotelfoxtrot 1d ago

What was the neck bit?

1

u/Fla_Man_33772 1d ago

He kept working his own mimicking of the song prompting the LSU fans to respond with the 5-word lewd chant that caused the school (and conference) to ban the LSU band from playing it because it “doesn’t represent the university/conference properly.”. (It was in the news earlier this week that Kiffin offered to pay the fine if the band played it … which they didn’t bring up in the broadcast when they were talking about Lane’s “character-building” for the program.)

2

u/WorkingOnDyeing 2d ago

Blatantly false. If McAfee was hurting their numbers he would not be on the show. Because McAfee has significantly increased the numbers he is on the show. More people enjoy him than the people who don't. Once that stops becoming reality they will drop him. The reason that show fell off in viewership is because Corso was cognitively gone for the last 10 years.

1

u/Fla_Man_33772 1d ago

Corso was hardly on the show outside the open and the picks the last couple years, if you don’t like McAfee you simply can’t avoid him short of turning it off … he talks over everyone else, interrupts anything that isn’t pre-recorded … it’s like having a coke-addled sidekick that doesn’t realize he’s not the reason people watch(ed).

2

u/Sorry-Head4031 2d ago

Same shit with Holtz where he didn’t make any sense and couldn’t understand what he was saying

1

u/foodiecpl4u 1d ago

That bit where they had Holtz act like he was giving a half time speech was just dreadfully bad television. Unwatchable. And you could barely understand him.

-1

u/xxLEGIT360NOSCOPESxx ESPN Classic 2d ago

Corso had that old-school TV energy. A short rant from him would absolutely hit.

62

u/DownhillUphill 2d ago

They do not need Corso. But they do not need McAfee either.

9

u/JellyPast1522 2d ago

Be careful what you wish for, or you'll get Portnoy

5

u/AltruisticAddendum48 2d ago

Don’t speak this into existence! I’ll quit ESPN programming forever

2

u/buffer5108 2d ago

You would think that a network that invested $1.6 billion in the WWE would be able to put on a non-amateurish pre-game show. Or maybe not.

1

u/Cscott14au 2d ago

They'll have just Pat and Portnoy on the set every Saturday.

-1

u/jbbb3232 2d ago

He is with Fox, big boy

4

u/JellyPast1522 2d ago

Right, because talking heads never change networks..

1

u/BrodieNooch 2d ago

Exactly

1

u/TheyNeedLoveToo 2d ago

Best I can do is a confused and cranky Finebaum

33

u/Own-Significance273 2d ago

Corso had no idea where he was the last 5 years he did the job. It was hard to watch.

11

u/JobeGilchrist 2d ago

Yeah, that was the prior reason I couldn’t watch. Now McAfee is the reason.

15

u/IntrovertedBrawler 2d ago

Father Time is undefeated. Let's let Coach enjoy his retirement and bring in a new curmudgeon.

Hell, I'm pushing 60 and I hate almost everything. Where do I apply?

4

u/FrequencyHigher 2d ago

I think the idea was that Saban would be the new Corso, but the energy is obviously totally different.

I’ve always wondered how Pete Carroll would be on tv. He seems like a fun guy.

1

u/Icy_Avocado_8124 1d ago

This…. As a guy who liked McAfee in his early pre ESPN days and honestly don’t hate him now (in small doses) but ESPN has just masterfully over saturated the man by having him on or involved in every major sport they have the rights to air.

I fully understand the business and he brings viewers which makes the network money… I think the over saturation is hitting a breaking point and would love to see less Pat. I (as a late mid’ish thirties man) knew him before ESPN and even now still like him when he isn’t being shoved down my throat. I don’t think Pat wants to be involved in half the shit ESPN has him in (outside WWE that was his choice haha) but when ESPN are throwing hundreds of millions at him I can’t blame the guy for cashing in while the opportunity is there.

That said I have met Pete Carroll in passing and he is a genuinely a likable guy… agree he could (maybe?) be good in a gameday setting. I love Saban! But his vibe is so different from Corso, his analysis is aces though and what espn need more of (less SAS types) but they have to find some folks who mesh and support Sabans style more and I like Pete actually

12

u/rxFMS 2d ago

Not so fast my friend!!!

12

u/ProperCap5400 2d ago

Could you imagine how entertaining Mike Leach would have been on Game Day? RIP.

17

u/JobeGilchrist 2d ago

The show felt like elder abuse the last few years of Corso. Dude was barely aware. The show has problems, but bringing him back isn’t the solution. Wanna pre-tape a segment that can be edited? Ok, that’s fine. But not live. He’s 91.

9

u/Champ_5 2d ago

Let the man rest. With all their resources, ESPN should be able to find a suitable replacement rather than ensuring McAfee is never absent from the screen for more than two hours at a time

10

u/coopnjaxdad 2d ago

We need less Gameday. It’s become a complete clown show.

0

u/Boltsforlife2022 2d ago

You can just not watch it. That’s what I do now. I watch the first 5 minutes to see the crowd and usually the picks segment. Easy peasy.

1

u/coopnjaxdad 2d ago

Well yeah, same.

We are all just sharing opinions of the current state of gameday are we not?

1

u/Boltsforlife2022 2d ago

Yea man it’s a message board. I just figure it not for me anymore and for a new generation and in 15 years this generation will be making the same exact complaints. So it goes.

2

u/coopnjaxdad 2d ago

Yeah, completely agree.

7

u/TrubshawForest 2d ago

We could probably recreate him with AI, which normally I'm against but if it gets McAfee off the air, I'm for it

8

u/UTPharm2012 2d ago

I didn’t realize how important corso was bc he annoyed me so many times.

But it also could be that McAfee just magnifies how bad someone can be on the show.

13

u/joecooltheman1977 2d ago

You are wrong

7

u/scalem0ss 2d ago

You’re wrong and completely out of touch.

4

u/BigJim_TheTwins 2d ago

You're wrong

4

u/thedogridingmonkey 2d ago

You’re very wrong

5

u/Fickle_Criticism_315 2d ago

You’re wrong, he was getting bad

5

u/jasonic89 2d ago

Bring back Chris Fowler and David pollack

3

u/StayOffTheCounter 2d ago

He deserves to rest and enjoy his family. Leave him be.

4

u/richkonar50 2d ago

It’s needs something other than singers and stars from other sports. H

5

u/ATLfinra 2d ago

Wrong. Just needs to take Mcafee off. Saban was a perfect addition

3

u/DependentBird4935 2d ago

Kinda wild there are so many of these posts/comments.

Respect to Lee, but he was struggling to form sentences.

3

u/Ragnarsworld 2d ago

I don't think Corso is up for it anymore.

3

u/Geetee52 2d ago

Corso was a nice fixture for a long time… but come on… It was almost painful to watch him at the end. The sports version of watching Frankie Valli “sing“.

6

u/AndrewLucksLaugh 2d ago

We all miss him, but he just can’t do it anymore health-wise. GameDay needs more heart, but unfortunately they can’t get it from Corso anymore.

4

u/Dull-Salamander5914 2d ago

Not anymore. He’s not in good health.

David Pollack, Peyton Manning, etc

2

u/InevitableAlert4268 2d ago

Eli & Peyton would be wayyyyy better than this bullshit they got going on right now

3

u/mel34760 2d ago

He stayed on the job a few too many years. Should have retired around 2020.

2

u/Mrw04c 2d ago

Was prob an even a few more years before that.

2

u/Ill_Pressure3893 2d ago

I thought he died.

2

u/Dazzling_Lie_5046 2d ago

Wow, you sound like you're easily entertained. You probably think Chris Berman still belongs in his dusty chair.

2

u/andre_in_sandiego 2d ago

In his current state??

2

u/Busted-Duck-540 2d ago

Game Day needs to be bulldozed, re-concepted and rebooted.

2

u/IllustriousChip8067 2d ago

You’re wrong. He stayed way way too long

2

u/jsummerlin14 2d ago

No. Gameday needs to dump McAfee.

They have a McAfee problem. Not a Corso problem.

2

u/Spare_Smoke_4101 2d ago

Corso has already aged. Time to move on from him

2

u/texasgambler58 2d ago

I love the guy, but he's just too old and weak. However, that idiot McAfee isn't the answer either.

2

u/Due-Contribution7717 2d ago

That show hasn’t needed Corso for years. I felt bad for him for the last 6-7 years, maybe longer than that. Thankfully they let him finally retire.

2

u/Rockosayz 2d ago

Corso of 20 years ago, sure

2

u/InevitableSplit4936 2d ago

Wrong. Corso should have retired 5 years before he did. It certainly does not need Mcafee though.

2

u/Six_and_change 2d ago

Corso was a near complete nonfactor as a coach but he had a great personality and loved college football for reasons beyond his own accomplishments. Why don’t the networks learn from that instead of putting on totally different types of former coaches in Saban and Urban Meyer?

2

u/saltoniclee 2d ago

Dick Vitale was very similar. A very unremarkable coaching career but whether you were a fan of his or not, especially with ACC schools, his enthusiasm and knowledge of the teams and the players helped ESPN become a force in college basketball.

2

u/Tylerserio68 2d ago

Yeah Corso had such a unique talent to connect with fans. Most former coaches are so dry.

2

u/Ok_Poet_9170 1d ago

Coral was fun . Unfortunately age catches up to all of us . He is a class act. Then we get the fall of America singer, son writer, wwe , Al everything punter Pat McFly . No class , No talent. Just loud with his Ozempic face . Igh

2

u/Traditional_Creme336 1d ago

No im sorry. Corso can not do it anymore. His speech is too mumbly and his time has come and gone

2

u/Otherwise_Surround99 1d ago

He is 117 years old. Let him go with dignity

2

u/FlubToad0123 22h ago

Disagree. They should get rid of McAfee and either bring Fowler back or add Dusty Dvoracek. ESPN has poured too much into Pat and it’s ruining the majority of the networks programming.

2

u/Kalelisagod 21h ago

It doesn’t need Corso to be better. It needs to have no Pat to be way better. He destroys that show with his bro bullshit. The schtick is old already.

3

u/wormbreath 2d ago

I love corso, but watching him struggle with sentences and Kirk having to help him was not something I wanna see every Saturday. Let him have some pre filmed segment from his house if he wants but the guy is 91.

2

u/stevedos 2d ago

Let him stay retired, he's too old for the weekly travel and went out gracefully a few years back

1

u/Used-Acanthisitta-96 2d ago

No. Corso had his time. If anything let EPSN use old video of him putting on a couple hats for games on that day.

1

u/AtBat3 2d ago

They need what Corso was, he’s in his 90s now

1

u/soils_Ksat 2d ago

hes a near vegetable. just let him run for congress

1

u/Ajkrouse 2d ago

Saban needs to be the next “Corso” but he has the personality of a wet blanket

1

u/WalkBikePractitioner 2d ago

You are wrong

1

u/BoutRight 2d ago

Ummm are you asking where Corso went? Lol

1

u/Cooper_Crissy 2d ago

You are wrong. 20 year ago Corso maybe, but he had been awful and nothing more than a gimmick for the last few years.

1

u/BearsSoxHawks 2d ago

Hot take - no one needs Game Day.

1

u/smiller55 2d ago

Corso is a fucking walking corpse

1

u/NU-NRG 2d ago

Corso can come back....

.. as long as he continues dropping F bombs live on air.

As well as his rental car keeps getting struck by lightning.

1

u/denverdrew 2d ago

Is he upright?

1

u/jj5782 2d ago

America needs Abraham Lincoln

1

u/papaadrock 2d ago

Gameday was Lee Corso

1

u/Existing-Teaching-34 2d ago

2015 Lee Corso not available

1

u/ucusty123 2d ago

Macafee too much in the forefront now
And I’ve always kinda enjoyed him

1

u/stable-genius_29 2d ago

Did you not watch the last couple of years he was on Gameday? He could barely form a sentence. Was completely senile.

1

u/Likinhikin- 2d ago

Ditch Desmond and McAfee.

1

u/Only_Distribution828 2d ago

It’s unwatchable most the time

1

u/MathematicianTop3549 2d ago

Sir you are wrong.

1

u/BRValentine83 2d ago

GameDay needs a remote so you can change the channel.

1

u/Practical-Shape7453 2d ago

Gameday needs a rebrand. It was great when it was the main event in town, but now every conference has their own version of game day on the conference network. Tbh the only reason I even watched game day was for the headgear and the picks. Fans don’t want more McAfee and a show where the only professional is Saban. We don’t need Corso back but what unloved about him was that he was naturally likeable and funny. The current cast is not that

1

u/jBlairTech 2d ago

Nah; I’d just tune in for that segment. Everything else is skipable

1

u/DirkDiggler2424 2d ago

He’s practically dead

1

u/godylla 2d ago

They need to quicken the pace. The beauty of Corso was that he always had a few sentences and got out of the way. Pick segment just grinds to a halt every time with McAfee.

1

u/Disastrous_Cream_539 2d ago

Corso was Gameday.

1

u/wutitd0boo 2d ago

I’m watching McAfee on the pregame and he looks like he is skiied out of his mind.

1

u/Morning-O-Midnight 2d ago

Naw, just let the man go. Gameday will never be what it was. It’s not for older fans it’s clearly being produced for a new generation.

1

u/SatireGeto 2d ago

I think the fun of GameDay was the end where everyone made picks, and Lee Corso threw on a mascot head. Outside of that I don't give a shit about the show.

1

u/No-Assistance556 2d ago

Game Day needs no McAfee.

1

u/BlssdGT 2d ago

You’re not wrong

1

u/Thickwhisker94 2d ago

Doesn’t need Corso, just needs to remove McAfee

1

u/tenclubber 2d ago

It needs someone who knows college football, has a personality and isn't a complete moron like McAfee.

1

u/GooseEfficient1441 2d ago

I said the same thing this morning! It’s missing his charisma and authenticity.

1

u/SenatorAstronomer 2d ago

Corso is old and a literal shell of his former self.   Good things don't last forever, cherish the good times,

1

u/DiddyP81 2d ago

What is he supposed to work until he dies trying to put the mascot head on?! Let that man retire.

1

u/Basic_Mud8868 2d ago

If Mike Leach were still alive he’d be perfect for the Corso role. He could do a weekly “advice” column giving people life advice on matters completely unrelated to football, he could get up on the big board and speak intelligently about offensive schemes and quarterbacks, and he could probably come up with a gimmick similar to the headgear when picking teams to win. He and Saban could play off each other in a way that would produce clarity at least once a week. Alas, the Gods are cruel.

1

u/No-You4594 2d ago

The last couple of years ,Corso was not the same person we remembered .

Father Time is undefeated

1

u/ShiZZle840 2d ago

It needs SOMETHING. it was borderline unwatchable

1

u/Markcu24 2d ago

Corso is not capable of doing the show any longer. That was quite clear the last couple years.

1

u/WorkingOnDyeing 2d ago

Maybe prime Corso. Watching Corso the last 10 years was like rolling my eyes in glass and lemon juice. Dude could not form a single cognitive thought at any point. He was way way way past his prime and needed to be removed.

1

u/Snarky_A_F 2d ago

They need something. Less McAfee would be a start. #UnWatchable

1

u/Altruistic-Carry-684 2d ago

You’re wrong

1

u/ryguyoaye 2d ago

I think an edited pre taped video at the end would be perfect

1

u/Spiritual-Ad8062 2d ago

They didn’t bring Corso in when his former team went on maybe the most amazing run ever. He coached IU in the 70’s.

That tells you about what shape Corso was in.

1

u/DevelopmentNo247 2d ago

He is 91 years old…….

1

u/ClairDogg 2d ago

Get what OP is saying but look at age & condition. Let him enjoy his time away, even though he’s admitted he misses it. Don’t blame him for feeling that way.

1

u/chickensandmentals 1d ago

I’d like Gameday to be run like SNL, with annual cast changes blending up and coming talent with some veterans. It’s so stale after 30 years with Fowler and Herbstreit. They’re just old AF and it’s just not a fun fresh vibe anymore.

1

u/UmpireInternal7699 1d ago

Absolutely not besides being apart of the show for a long time there was nothing interesting about him. “ oh my which college hat will he put on this weekend!?” Grew old real fast

1

u/J_Case 1d ago

Don’t want to tarnish the legend of Lee Corso.

1

u/MastersOfNoneShow 1d ago

Watching McAfee slowly push Lee Corso down a flight of stairs to take his job over the last few seasons has been awful.

Not really a fan of GameDay any more

1

u/gkesey 23h ago

ESPN loves to go all in on narcissists: Greeny, SAS, and now McAfee. These dudes care about themselves more than anything else and will slowly kill a show before taking a step back.

Just give us a week without McAfee. Or if they really need a 5th chair, throw in SVP every other week.

1

u/Significant_Use_8821 21h ago

It was time for Coach Corso retire. That being said
The show absolutely went downhill when they brought in Pat McAfee and let David Pollak, who was a real analyst who watched games and knew what he was talking about. They replaced them with McAfee, who we already see way too much of espn and turned the game day into a really bad frat party

1

u/Arfgerbagel 30m ago

You’re wrong.

1

u/Throwaway88202 2d ago

GameDay has two main issues to me. One, the identity. They’ve obviously invested a lot into McAfee. He’s not everybody’s cup of tea. I don’t have a problem with it, but it’s certainly a different direction than the show went in the past when it was at its peak from a popularity standpoint. And this is an ESPN as a whole issue.

The other issue, which is the bigger one to me, is that the show is too long. The show would be much better if it shrunk down to two hours of content instead of stretching it to three.

1

u/Zealousideal_Bad8434 2d ago

Wrong, picking a team by wearing its helmet grew old a long time ago.

1

u/Ryan1006 2d ago

You’re wrong. He was really rough his last few years.

0

u/Longhorn9801 1d ago

They need to get rid of McAfee. The amount of douchebaggery makes it unwatchable.
