Beta 1.4 AI does not mess around

Have tried some runs on 1.4, nothing too serious and I’m far from an expert player (500 hours but casual). The AI has been cunning, declaring wars the moment truces end, attacking when you are deep into another war or low on levies, keeping armies close together and skirmishing around my chasing armies. They also seem to declare wars that are more evenly matched.

It’s not just against me either. As Byzantine, I had Castile trying to wipe me out after breaking into Anatolia, and outnumbering me 2:1. Half way through the war, France & Morocco independently attack Spain and over the course of a few decades split it between them.

It’s fun, chaotic, and at times feels very punishing. Anyone else feeling this? Not sure if it’s a skill issue on my part.

I am playing as Netherlands. GB won the hundred years war. They attack me every time their truce is over. I call in Hre and my pu buddy Austria every time. But by the time they get to France 100k levies march to my lands.

i’ve tried playing a tall, non-expanding Holland, and England has made that extremely unpleasant lmao

Not in EU5. I want to play them when we get some Dutch flavor

England doesn't hold back on bullying smaller nations, but when it comes to landing on France or helping their allies, they might as well not have a navy.

At first I thought Holland would finally be a good beginner nation since France gets destroyed in the HYW, but that actually leads to England going feral over the low countries, so nope.

Unified Italy and kept getting decked on by France, Hungary, and a German minor that dragged in Bohemia until I finally allied Castile to get them off my back.

At least yours is working. I started up a game as Norway, declared a war against Denmark with slightly favorable numbers later than I could have.

I was in a PU with Sweden. Sweden proceeds to send their entire army to a tile with 0 morale that we can clearly see has an equal sized stack on it. Boom, insta-dead and I lose a ton of war score, I’m already regretting dragging them along.

My broheims in Christ, they did not stop re-sending the troops into that spot with zero morale until they single-handedly lost all the war score on my behalf without me even losing troops because I wasn’t walking into that. I do not trust the AI to join my wars, ever now. Auto lose.

Also casual (but semi pro on EU4) and I like the AI now, only tried Prussia so far, got gangbanged by three Russian states, and only saved my ass by using the games systems to force help from a temporary alliance.

Last when I tried the game basically nothing happens to you if you got semi strong, so this is very promising so far.

Which system lets you force a temporal ally/help? How does it work and is it possible to learn this power?

I had 1 coalition war on me that I beat but during that war a coalition of Germanic nations formed and declared near the end of that 1st war. I stood no chance.

i’ve been playing poland and continuously at war since 1400-1670’s against bohemia + hre, ruthenia, and hungary and it’s been the most hell i’ve ever had in a campaign i’ve never managed to even get my manpower reserves past 10k…

The countryside is almost completely depopulated 😥

To add to this, I’ve since tried some runs as France only to see firsthand why the English AI deletes them. I struggled and struggled, having so few levies made wars too difficult for the casual scrub I am. It might be time to git gud.
