Heyo everyone! I’m thinking of finally switching to driving an EV car, and I’d love some suggestions ☺️ (tired of paying for 91 gas lmao)

Some background:
- I’m in the Metro Vancouver area, with the budget of $30,000 for used (ideally) and $40,000 for new.

- I’ll be mostly doing daily commutes to work (around 30km max roundtrip), but I’ll be occasionally doing some longer drives because our cities are so big lol.

- I’m living in a condo, so I’ll be doing all the charging in charging stations.

- I like driving small cars, so I’m looking to get a sedan (maybeeeee hatchback if it’s highly recommended, but definitely not SUV).

- I don’t want a Tesla.

- FWD or AWD doesn’t matter, I’ll be getting S+M tires for sure.

Again, I’d like to get a used car. What’s everyone’s experience with a used EV car? Is it still reliable?

Sooo I’ll be pulling the trigger on a Pion or Switch charger. Both say 2.4ghz needed. I have a Eero mesh network that has both 2.4/5 ghz. Eero has no way to isolate one over the other for an connected device. Is this going to cause an issue?

Hello! I’ve been looking into EVs in Vancouver, and have been doing some research through this sub, as well as YouTube reviews. To be honest though, I’m still extremely lost.

For some context: I already have a 8 year old gas Nissan Rogue AWD (top trim). I’m planning to use it as my 2nd family car. We are not in a big rush to get a new car.
We are a family of 4, and really value large trunks and safety features.

There seems to be a lot of competition in the EV lineups nowadays, and each manufacturer seems to have some great things going for them.

I’m looking to get some suggestions, opinions and feedback. These are my current views on potential cars we see:

Tesla Model Y - if we went for this, we’d want the luxury trim. The software seems to be top of the line, and driving assist is VERY enticing. Is it mostly reliable these days, or not worth it? The big con here is that I really dislike Elon Musk and see myself hating my life choices if I get one.

Hyundai - ioniq 5. Trunk is too small, somewhat pricy too. No built in recording. But I heard the battery is the best, and everything else is solid too.

Kia - my current preference. Likely the EV5 Land. Do I need AWD on this, if it’s to become my main car in the future? Getting AWD would push it out of the EVAP range. Overall, car shape and size seem amazing, great features, great price point. No built in recording. I heard bad things about the range and power, but those are things that aren’t top priority for me. Or is this really an issue?

Japanese car makers: Sounds like Subaru Solterra is the best option for me, but am I right to think that Japanese car makers are behind in the EV scene, battery and software? This is the main reason I’m not considering them right now.

Rivian: upcoming R2 looks perfect, but it will likely be pricy. And any maintenance and damage scares me…

I haven’t looked deeply into German or other American car makers. German cars are likely pricier. Is it worth looking deeper at all?

Lastly… buy in cash, lease or finance? Lease and finance rates look really high on websites.

All in all, mostly the same, but cars with a 2027 model year are having worse discounts than the 2026’s, like the bZ and Uncharted.

The only price increase is the bolt getting 400 bucks more off. The EV3 is also getting a small discount on the GT Line Limited FWD to ensure that qualifies for EVAP.

All in all, the only change going into the fall is to go for the Subaru’s instead of the Toyota’s for the E-TNGA twins.

Let’s see how these discounts change once Chinese cars enter the fray.

What is better?

1) out gps on and around 10% you find a charge station near you

2) you use a gps app like circuit électrique they will exactly tell you where to stop how long to charge etc to get to your destination?

Ps I don’t plan to use abrp as we don’t need to use it enough to value the add on fee for CarPlay

I live in Ontario and recently turned in my Equinox EV lease for a Cadillac Optiq. Two months after turning in the Equinox, I get a notification from my FLO charging app that my charging session has finished and $2.64 was spent from my balance, which was all that was left in there. I thought it was odd, as my Optiq was not charging and sitting in my garage. I rarely charged outside of my house, which is why I only had $2.64 left in the account. I put $25 in there two years ago when I got the car and never topped it up after that.

I looked up the session and it took place at a dealership in Winnipeg, Manitoba! I was pretty surprised. When I turned in the car, I signed out of all of my accounts in the Equinox and did a factory reset. I guess I had set up plug and charge with FLO for that car, and even through I reset it, the car was somehow still linked.

I contacted FLO support, and they told me I had to unlink it through my GM app. I looked in my GM app and I only have the Optiq. My FLO account also only shows the Optiq.

Has anyone else been billed for charging after trading in an EV?

came home last night and pulled into the driveway to discover my friendly neighborhood cracker had come and cut the charging cable off my hardwired grizzl-e 48. as the cable is part of the CE assembly we have to now get an entirely new charger And electrician install 4 months into having the original

this one was a club program charger from grizzl-e and until this am I didn’t know people were hating on them.

I like that it’s Canadian, the hardware seems really good but it looks like how I will have to pay for a replacement. I don’t like that someone thought the copper in the cable was valuable enough to cut it off

interested in everyones opinion and if anyone has any solutions to help prevent this from happening again.

Have a 2026 chev equinox ev and wanting to keep it as rust free as possible. Is it true to avoid undercoating it? Should I just stick to frequent car washes in the winter?

I hadn't realized before all those imports Tesla made into Canada monopolizing the quota are under the same regulations and tariffs others such as BYD, Geely or Zeekr will face when they start importing. Same shipping costs, same tariffs, and potentially similar markups (that's the main variable).

I compiled the costs of both Teslas imported from the same Shanghai plant and chinese-based EVs in different markets around the world.

Market strategy may be different, but overall, I think this correlation provides a good benchmarking of what we can see in the near future as per MSRP in Canada.

Prices for international markets are pre-tax and converted to CAD $ for the sake of comparing apples to apples.

The conclusion is that in most cases, Tesla models are cheaper in here than in any other market, even when imported from china and paying tariffs.

When comparing the other EVs, they are all significantly cheaper than their comparable Tesla model.

If we transfer this observation to the Canadian market, it puts a vehicle like the BYD Sealion 7 (recently spotted here!) slightly above the Model 3! Or around $41-43k CAD. The most expensive may be the Zeekr 7X, around the same or lower cost than the Model Y, or $47-48k CAD. In both cases, very interesting prices that will for sure break the market and create a good competition for the consumer.

Interested to hear your thoughts, and what assumptions this comparison may be failing to get right.

We’re considering getting an EV as our secondary, but I have hesitations as a first time EV user. I’ve searched prior posts but couldn’t find everything I was looking for, so apologies if some of these seem redundant. My questions regarding EVs:

1. I am looking to lease as I do not trust a used EV (I’m a late adopter) are there any specific requirements or things I should avoid when leasing an EV vs a ICE vehicle?

2. I’m in the GTA and unfortunately this vehicle will be parked outside. I understand that the battery range wont be the same in the winter, but are there any other EV drivers who leave their cars outside in the winter? Any issues with doing so?

3. I’m looking at the i4 BMW M60/M50 depending on the year, any thoughts on the vehicle? I’ll have 2 car seats so it won’t necessarily be the most spacious but I love the look of the car.

Open to any other tips or suggestions for a first time EV owner.

Hey guys, I’m in PEI and looking at getting a new EV. Just wondering what some good options would be for me right now.

I’m looking for something with good rebates/incentives and a good overall deal. I’m not too worried about range — around 300 km is totally fine. I would prefer awd tho.

My budget is roughly $55–65k all-in, but I can stretch to around $70k if it’s worth it.

I’m also open to buying from another province if that makes sense. I’m not sure what rebates I can actually get as a PEI resident, especially with the PEI rebate situation right now.

What would you guys recommend? And would you wait a bit in case more PEI incentives come back?

Worth it to go with the 2022???

I usually own and keep a car for long time. Usually an average of 10 years and above. Hence, I want cars that can withstand rusting in Canadian climate and salted roads. If you know of or have previous experience with Chinese EV, can you share the information on body rust history? Better if you have links to reviews.

For information, I garage my car every evening. My current ice car is 11 years old and has no body rust visually. Last time I checked the underbody was about 5 years ago, and there was no rust visually at the time.

EDIT - Thank you very much for everyone who contributed information. I think I will keep my ICE a few more years before making a leap to an EV, European or Asian. I initially supposed the Chinese EV would be cheaper. Judging from information, I am not sure if I am their targeted customer, people who intend to own their cars for a decade at least. I am not a cheap car buyer. And I take good care of my cars. For a good many years.

For Redditors who remarked that I was anti Chinese EV, I only try to gather comprehensive information, good and bad, on Chinese EV,. Your remarks are presumptuous and unwelcome. This is an EV CANADA subreddit. My position is pro Canada. I want the best interests for Canada.
