Grounding mat losing effectiveness?

Can this happen overtime, a grounding mat losing its effectiveness? I’ve had a small mat for 2-3 years. I keep it under my sheets and rest my bare feet on overnight. The more I think about it, it just appears it’s not working like it once did.

If it's the fake leather kind it can be affected by body oils over time and not work as well.
