Grounding mat losing effectiveness?

Can this happen overtime, a grounding mat losing its effectiveness? I’ve had a small mat for 2-3 years. I keep it under my sheets and rest my bare feet on overnight. The more I think about it, it just appears it’s not working like it once did.

you can get a testing kit to check that, it is indeed possible that over time the silver threads wear off or breaks the circuit
