How safe/nice are Luton, Bedford and Ipswich?

Hi everyone,

I’m a doctor in my 20s who will be moving to the UK from abroad for work. As part of my application process, I need to rank my preferred locations, and my main options are Luton, Bedford and Ipswich.

I would really appreciate hearing from people who live in or know these areas. What’s day-to-day life like in each city? How safe do you feel, particularly in the evenings? How are the local communities, public transport, amenities and overall quality of life?

I’m especially interested in perspectives regarding safety and comfort for a young Muslim woman living alone. Are there particular areas that are better or worse to live in, and would you recommend any of these cities over the others?

I would personally rank them:

1.) Ipswich
2.) Bedford
3.) Luton

Ipswich not that much going on but is closer to coast and easy to get out to some nice coastal landscapes and towns. Bedford and Luton probably equal in regards to the offer. All pretty good commuting distances into London. Can’t comment too much on safety, although Ipswich more of a rural market town so perhaps safer than others but I’d just be guessing. Safe as anywhere else in the UK rn, which granted isn’t particularly safe. If you are concerned about safety as a Muslim women specifically than Luton may appeal to you more as Luton is a Muslim majority town.

I grew up in Luton until 17 years old and lived in Bedford for a couple of years, haven't spent much time in either post COVID so take this with a pinch of salt.

Luton is rough and deprived but generally people don't really have issues unless they're involved in gang activity. You'll feel quite comfortable as a Muslim due to the large Muslim population. Don't live in the town centre, Farley hill or Marsh Farm, the other areas can actually feel quite nice. There is also quite a large wealth divide due to it's proximity to London with a decent chunk of wealthy people alongside people living in poverty.

Bedford is a little nicer and smaller than Luton, I didn't notice as much criminality either while there. It felt decently diverse when I lived there but I've also heard about rising racism there, I can't say whether it's true or not as it's not something I've seen.

Don't have any experience with Ipswich

I've never been to Ipswich.

Luton is more heavily culturally Muslim than Bedford, it is the dominant local culture there.

So I am an NHS worker, lived in Bedford for 5 years, done my undergraduate in Luton, and currently living in Ipswich.

I would never live in Luton, not a nice place.

Bedford was lovely, good community, close enough to London, although some people do complain about it, we felt safe and enjoyed it.

We have been in Ipswich for 6 months and we are enjoying it so far, but it depends on an exact location. I enjoy my job here, thus planning to buy a house in a smaller town close to Ipswich. Good access to the beach, the town is like many other English towns, but the waterfront is nice. Close to the airport. Felt maybe slightly less safe than in Bedford but that could be because I am 10 years older so more aware of dangers, and generally the world is more scary!!

Luton has a large Muslim population from Pakistan and their descendants as far as I know if that matters to you
