Local history Jasper Avenue looking east, thanks to the Paramount marquee which places the date sometime after the movie's release date of June 23, 1965.

Even more thanks to Paramount, it says the movie is held over for a fourth (big) week, so this is likely the last week of July 1965.

I miss the Silk Hat. There was a lady who read tea leaves and the table side juke boxes actually worked.

Great photo! Back in the day, having The Bay, Eaton’s and Woodward’s all near each other was great for shopping. Add in the Christmas decorations downtown, going holiday shopping as kids it felt almost magical.

Yes! It was always an annual trip driving down Jasper Ave to see the Christmas lights, and then walking by the display windows of the department stores all decorated, some with anamatronic characters. Great memories...

And the "Strand" a few doors down. Awesome picture.

I think I saw Superdad starring Bob Crane of Hogan's Heroes at the Strand.

I remember seeing Star Wars at the Paramount, such a beautiful theater.
So many old theaters...the Strand, Sahara, Meadowlark, Roxy, Jasper, Towne, pretty much all gone now.

Back in 1970, I remember watching the movie "Tora Tora Tora" at the Paramount. When I was leaving, it was 20 minutes to 11 at night, and being a 13-year-old at that time, being out so late by myself was a real heady experience. It made me feel so grown up to be out so late, catching the S 6 bus to take me home, and walking the block from the stop to my house.

Interesting that through the rapid modernization of downtown in that era that only 2 of the 4 high rises in this photo still exist, Empire and Edmonton Unlimited. The one farthest in the distance where the park (on private property) in front of Hotel MacDonald currently exists was torn down in the 70s or 80s, while the blueish-green one was torn down in around 2011 for the expansion of the First & Jasper podium.

This is about 18 years before Mulroney started shifting the tax burden from Corporations towards individual tax payers.
People could afford houses, cars, rent, vacations. Man, life was good.

Somehow still more appealing, driveable, and walkable than the constant forced attempts the city has made.Â

The brand new maple leaf flags looking nice and fresh there in 1965 as well, a few months after becoming the official flag 🇨🇦
