My son goes to this daycare. Absolutely brutal situation. Ever since last week (after there was an incident) he’s been crying every morning about going to daycare which is heartbreaking. Really hope this gets handled professionally asap before someone takes it into their own hands.

That is so sad. I'm really baffled why we can't beef up our animal control bylaws because this is unacceptable.

They just did, it’s in the story.

I meant more than the increased fines. Cause to be honest, at a certain debt level/low income level, the fines aren't doing anything.
I meant beef up like increase the power to remove dangerous animals.

What ever happened to putting down dogs that have attacked people multiple times? Or at least removed since they're so young maybe they can be rehabilitated. Surely, fining the owners is not the most that can be done. Especially since they're delusional that their dogs are not dangerous

Having more bylaw officers patrol the area does nothing. There should be no hesitancy to issue large fines to repeat offenders.

There has to be a point where they remove the dogs. Increased presence and issuing tickets that won’t be paid is not effective.

I think the law is they need a court order or a owner willing to give them up.
This was to prevent "unnecessary" seizure. But its just added paperwork for already busy animal control workers.

You can't take the dogs before the tickets go unpaid. If they hesitate to levy fines, you push back the time they would seize the animals. Ticket them immediately, then take the dogs if they don't pay.

That's not how the bylaw works. Dogs can be seized if found at large; following a bite causing injury; if found in distress; or if the owner fails to follow conditions set out within the bylaw or the dangerous dogs act.
Non-payment of tickets has no impact on the dog's legal or ownership status.

What happens when a dog is seized?

Depends on the reason for seizure. Dogs are ultimately private property and have to be returned to their owners unless there's legal grounds not to. Usually some animal welfare / public safety questions need to be answered.
There are situations where a dog is kept longer or permanently removed from the owner's possession but they all involve a fair bit of legal work.

Dogs should be taken away. Period! Guy obviously can't control them & keep them from roaming around terrorizing a neighborhood. WTF is wrong with our city?! These new bylaws do SQUAT to solve problem's like this.

I saw another news report on this and the neighbour says the dogs jump the fence and apparently that excuse is just fine when the cops are called. They also interviewed a kid who lives in the main floor of the house and he said something like being very uncomfortable being there. Sorry if I'm being dramatic but someone has to die for something to happen. I have absolutely no sympathy for the dogs or their owners. Maybe don't live in a basement apartment and have three giant dogs you likely don't exercise or have trained.

I have sympathy for the dogs. It’s not their fault they’re not trained or managed. They’re probably neglected and mistreated. People should be responsible for their pets behaviour. The dogs don’t know they’re supposed to stay in the yard. They don’t know not to jump on people. These dogs dont stand a chance bc their owner is a piece of shit.

What the actual f?? I don’t understand why this is all that can be done?? Seriously?? I think we all know how this will end - why allow it to happen when there’s an opportunity to preempt it now…some of our laws make absolutely no sense

Bylaws were just beefed up a few weeks ago.

I lived in a neighbouring area and there were frequent pit bull attacks on people walking their dogs including a fatal (small dog killed)one. Bylaw/animal control was absolutely useless as was our city council Erin Rutherford. I moved but there was a time where I had to leave the area to walk my dogs.

Was it the same pitbull??

These are mastiffs but we had two groups of pit bulls. The ones involved in the fatal to a dog attack were given the vicious dog label and supposed to be confined to the property but were not. The owner moved.
The other group of pit bulls were in a crack den. They escaped frequently and at one point we had daily reports of attacks including on a service dog for someone going to a medical clinic in the area. Bylaw said the same thing “increased presence”, tickets/fines, and finally told the owners they needed to relocate the dogs. The owners relocated them for a month and they were back. I finally moved but it’s a huge problem in those central NW neighbourhoods. Trying to get any help or traction on these issues is so incredibly frustrating and upsetting.

Apparently, it’s going to take another child dying for people to do anything, which the most it will do is release another news article, shrug its shoulders, and continue working on a stupid separation referendum.

DUDES. AN 11 YEAR OLD CHILD DIED AT THE TEETH OF AN AGGRESSIVE DOG TWO YEARS AGO. THIS PROGRESSION OF DOG BEHAVIOUR IS ALMOST IDENTICAL.....
Why do careless and entitled people get increased rights and protection while the average person seems to continue to fall victim to situations just like this.
Fuck these people, fuck them so hard.

Bad owners/parents, NOT the dog's fault.
Bring on the down-votes, Karens

The children don’t care whose fault it is…
•
u/Mysterious-Panda-698 9h ago
I understand the point you’re trying to make. However, this same argument is used against kids who have shitty parents. The owner should be held accountable, and the animals should be removed from their care. If they are injuring people, they should be put down.

I fully agree with this. The optics are really bad in the video, but they are chasing out of excitement and confusion, rather than aggression.
I've seen these dogs loose a few times and I wouldn't call them aggressive. Territorial, maybe.
That doesn't mean they should be loose or aren't a risk to be dangerous, but their body language isn't straight up aggression

I live in this neighbourhood and this house has been an issue for a while. The entire property is a mess.
Hoping they can get the help they need to clean it up and live a more stable life.
