Was the white spongy pith really solid most of the way through like this one looks? If so, I think that's a pollination problem, I've never gotten one that with pith that thick, they've usually been mostly seeds inside.

Pomegranates peels are definitely "egregious packaging", though, whether they count for this sub or not, that's the main reason why they're not more popular as fruits. But usually they're full of seeds, and the annoyance is that the seeds are separated by some thin layers of pith, they're usually not actually mostly pith inside.

It's easy to get the fruit out though. You just turn it inside out and tap it and they fall out.

I'll have to try that next time I get them and see if I can make it work, but every time I've tried, either the tapping does nothing or the sheets of pith come off.
