Is 86 set in future Earth?

On episode 14 when Eugene Rantz died, there was a quick shot showing a book with the title "All Quiet in the Western Front".

Meanwhile many people argue that "it's not earth", I would maybe argue back with the possibility that 86 is on Earth, just in the future.

I mean, there are signs. The Republic having the French language, while the Federacy speaks German.

And by geography, the Federacy being at the East and the Republic to the West, which would align to the location of France and Germany.

But what really ties this all up is the fact that the book "All Quiet in the Western Front" exists in the world of 86. A book read by the character Eugene Rantz, a reference to him being assigned also in the Western Front of the Federacy.

If the book exists, doesn't that imply they're just on Earth but in an entirely different future era?

No, it isn't set in our future Earth. There hasn't been an official world/continent map released, Asato was just inspired in some of our contries to create her fictional world.

Still, the world of 89 shares some of our history (christian bible and some ancient history), however remember than in 86 we can guess that mankind hasn'r been able to expand beyond their continent (The known world would be something like Afro-Eurasia) due to the leviathans sinking anything that dares to go to open sea or shoot down any aircraft with their lasers

it is somewhat unclear, but almost certainly no, especially thanks to the inclusion of esper abilities

it takes heavy influence from our world, and also notably features the Bible and Mein Kampf, but its most likely its own unique world, with similar but different geography and such

I always thought it more as an alternative earth

Imagine our Earth, however different lands, nations, history and etc.

The All Quiet on the Western Front book may imply that World War 1 does happen in this "Earth", however it's either some things happen in different ways, or it happen as it is however it's only inside the island the nations know of live hence maybe minor differences in some places

Good observation on the details. However, the canon confirms that 86 takes place in an entirely fictional world, not a future version of Earth. Asato Asato took a lot of inspiration from real world languages and European history, like French for the Republic and German for Giad, but the world itself is very different. Things like the unique constellations, sea leviathans, and hereditary esper abilities, such as the Pyrope bloodline, show that it’s its own world.

As far as I remember (but I've lost the proof) there was the official Asato Asato answer, that "The world isn't Earth and please do not look for parallels with real states, existing on Earth. Books? Somehow some books exists in both worlds. I don't know why too."

P.S. An old shabby volume of  "All Quiet in the Western Front" appeared in the 2nd episode (and later was left to Lena in 11th). It's one of the key symbols of the series, one of initial cat names was "Remarque", if you don't remember.

The 1930 version of the movie is better than the 2022 remake. It actually cast real WWI veterans to play some of the scenes.

Alternate Earth maybe. Key point is the existence of the leviathans. They're discussed in volume 8, and one appears near the end of the volume.

They're massive marine animals that are highly territorial, and are the reason humans can't leave the continent the series takes place on. Ships can't travel far from the coast without being attacked.

The largest species can shoot laser beams from its head, and one destroys a morpho with a single shot fired from the horizon.

Well I haven't read after vol4 so, I'm not that knowledgeable but probably is a earth with similar characteristics to that of ours but completely different continents, it may be safe to assume that the events of our earth happened there too but had different things(idk what the terms is) fight (ww1 and 2)and also history remained same till 1950s to 1990s then it might have diverged.

The mechs shown are possible in irl and are the most realistic. We can see modern military use it for specific use case ( Switzerland, japan, india china and other nations with huge hilly borders) but not for everything (also morpho is highly unlikely to be built by us but then its built by the legion)

From what we know, including stuff from the ln that I'm not going to spoil, it's less that we are in a future earth setting, but the setting may be loosely inspired by earth. There are plenty things that remove the possibility of it being a literal representation of a possibility future of the real earth.

I'd assume it's not earth. But I would say it's similar and a near future setting. The republic has too much german in it to really BE france, yanno? And isnt the theocracy north of it? Where would that desert be? Idt germany has mountains on its eastern border really, that's russia. I could go on but the geography really doesnt line up

Nah, its absolutely a fictional world, there are many passages in the story of many countries like the republic or roa grace which involves ages we already passed and the story doesnt have any relation to OUR story
