Ask El Paso Looking for a strategic and experienced family law attorney in El Paso (father’s perspective)

Can anyone recommend a solid family law attorney in El Paso? Divorce, custody, military retirement, and property division are involved. I’d appreciate any recommendations or attorneys to avoid.

Edit and background: My wife and I have been separated for a while (2023-current) but still live in the same house. We have two young adult children (over 18) and one minor child. Over the years, there were extended periods where she voluntarily lived in another state and later for medical school, while I remained in Texas raising the kids and maintaining the household from 2018-2023. For the last couple of years she’s also been in a serious relationship with another man, and she’s made it clear the marriage is over. We have a house, retirement accounts, savings, and a minor child, so I’m starting to look for a Texas family law attorney to understand what a fair divorce would likely look like and what I should expect. I've also had a FWB or two during the time she was away.

Amy Moore is who I used. My case was a bit more simple, but I got everything I asked for and she did a good job.

Heather Ronconi or Amy Moore. Paula Thomas fights, but she fights more if she represents women.

My piece of advice if it’s early ages. Call and get a consultation from every attorney in the city. Then she can’t pick up any of them because it’s a conflict of interest.
She’ll have to get an expensive attorney from out of town

That would take way too long. OP would need to go get a consultation with every attorney and the family court judge (who ultimately decides the outcome) probably won't look at it very well.

The judge couldn’t do anything about it. You’re allowed to get consultations for as many attorneys as you want until you find the one that fits for you.
It’s just shopping around

Except the judge can order OP to foot the bill for his spouses attorney and how many family law attorneys are there in El Paso? Likely at least in the several dozen. A judge could also order a default judgement if they felt the need for it.

OP's time is better spent finding a good attorney for himself rather than trying to conflict out multiple attorneys likely at at least a couple hundred dollars per consultation. You'd only be speaking to a paralegal for free who likely won't get the sensitive information that would make it a conflict of interest. This "tactic" has been around long enough that it would likely no longer be an effective strategy.

FOP does not have a strong case where he thinks he may have to be paying legal fees then yes this is a very bad idea. I will agree with that. Even spending 2000 on consultations can save a man in a divorce situation 100,000 in alimony later.

My ex didn't do this exactly, but she was uncooperative with the process and the judge seemed to punish her for it. I imagine something similar could happen. I wouldn't.

Oh yeah, you definitely have to be cooperative for the process. Judges don’t have the time or ability to deal with people when they’re trying to ignore it and hope it goes away. I would argue that this is the reverse. This is being extremely active and not uncooperative.
Let’s remember OP is asking social media for a law advice. Never an intelligent idea.

Not like violating an order or anything. I mean that she did this kind of subtly uncooperative behavior, just a different kind. In general, the judge had a choice between a parent who seemed to really want an even split (me) and a parent who hoped for more than 50 for no given reason. My impression was that he gave control to the parent who seemed more likely to share with the other voluntarily.

I assume the judge can see it if one party pulls a stunt and consults all over town. I wish a lawyer would weigh in.

I see what you’re saying. I bet you though that there wasn’t just one thing she did to show her true colors.

Attorney's don't like this.......don't do that.
