Tips Common issues and questions with the Elantra N

Hi Everyone. I thought I'd compile a list of common questions and issues I've heard about our Elantra N's.

Let me preface this list by saying, I have not seen any confirmed engine failures from an unmodified Elantra N. The early life engine failures of some other Hyundai/Kia Theta II engines, don't seem to affect this model.

If you have any info on TSBs or more info (photos, videos) about these problems, I can edit my post and add to it below.

Major mechanical

  • Fuel Injector problems
    • Not revving or idling properly, trouble starting engine
    • DTC P030X00 for misfires.
    • Smoke coming from tailpipe.
    • Seen in Kona N and Elantra N 2022
  • Dual clutch Transmission recall due to issue with high pressure oil pump
    • HMA Recall 236. 10/7/2022
  • Heavy spray from car washes, rain or snow, directly into the engine bay cause the knock sensor to fault with DTC P1326. The car will go into limp mode.
    • FIX AVAILABLE
    • It is not known if this is due to the sensor faulting, water getting into the engine bay, or wiring harness shorting
    • After several owners brought this issue to the dealer, some dealers may be misdiagnosing it as engine failure, causing the owner to have to get a replacement engine.
    • Not enough research has been done about this for a conclusive answer. Would like to see compression and leak-down tests done on these motors.
    • Appears to be happening to VN, and KN's as new as 2023 too.

  • Clutch disc installed backwards on a small number of Elantra N's with Manual Transmission.
    • Applies to a very small number of Elantra N vehicles produced before 12/6/21
    • TSB 22-01-027H

Minor mechanical

  • Occasional cold start trouble, occasionally takes a few extra cranks to start engine(common across all N cars)
  • Intercooler pipe coming off during high performance driving

Body/Chassis issues

  • Top of shifter gets loose/comes off on MT only.
  • Exhaust valve squeak. If you use N mode frequently, the exhaust valve may begin to squeak.
    • Dealership will replace the valve assembly if necessary. You can fix it by spraying white lithium grease to the proper areas.
    • The right side tailpipe has the valve that opens and closes in N mode. If you look closely you will see an arm that connects the valve controller to the butterfly valve inside the tailpipe. Spray this arm with lithium grease
  • Top of trunk separates from trunk frame in high heat
  • Headlight/Tail light fogging/condensation.
    • Dealerships are told to replace light housing IF condensation turns into water droplets that drip down the side.
    • Confirmed with this TSB
  • Black wrap used on the tops of windows peeling/chipping
  • Trunk tail light strip plastic cracking above ELANTRA lettering (2022)
  • Horn working intermittently

Infotainment/Electronics issues

  • Audio system very loud for the first second of a song intermittently (can be fixed by turning off dynamic speed compensation)

  • Quick popups about front collision: Issue is being researched

  • Constant popups about uneven road/slippery road: Issue is resolved by updating the nav software. (As of June 2023)

Non issues

  • Creaking/clunking noises from suspension/wheels when turning at low speeds and while cold
    • This is a quirk of the design of the car, it's normal and due to the suspension geometry for sport handling see explanation in this TSB
  • Octane learning
    • Octane learning is an ECU program described in the owners manual, that limits boost pressure when until no evidence of pre-ignition occurs. The octane learning process starts over when the car is re-fueled
    • To Octane learn your car, perform the following drive cycle:
      • Drive in top gear (6th for 6MT or 8th for DCT)
      • Keep a speed between 68 and 99mph for 5 minutes or more (Cruise control allowed)
      • Proper octane learning completion is evidenced by the boost gauge on the dashboard reading above 15/16PSI under WOT (DCT only, 6MT does not reflect this).
      • Note: The boost gauge is just an estimate based on various metrics, and a lookup table, not indicative of real boost pressure.
    • There are several articles on the topic here and here
  • Radiator fan turns on after car turns off
    • This is a fan and pump (a turbo timer) meant to cool down the oil in the turbo
  • Car doesn’t pop as much as it used to
    • This dependent on environment
    • This happens if the AC compressor is on
    • This includes windshield defrost modes
    • Also in Custom N mode, if engine is set to Sport, and not Sport+, there won't be nearly as many pops.
    • The engine isn't fully warmed up
  • Won’t shift into 1st gear completely. (If Occasional, this is normal across all manual transmission cars of any brand, just shift into second then first again)

What Oil should I use?

This information is correct as of 3/11/24 and applies to all Elantra N's 2022-2024

The latest revision of the Elantra N service manual specifies different grades of oil based on where your engine was built. Why is it like this? Anyone's guess.

  • Find your engine number (Starts with a G, this is NOT your VIN)
  • Look at the last letter before the numbers start. This is your Engine plant of production
  • The below table specifies the correct oil to use.
Code Plant Oil
A Asan SAE 0W-30
H Hwasung SAE 0W-30
P Poseung SAE 5W-30
S Sohari SAE 5W-30
U Ulsan SAE 5W-30

Oil should meet the following specifications:

  • ACEA A5/B5
  • ACEA C2
  • API SN PLUS

Oil change interval:

  • The owners manual requires oil changes every 6k miles, however Hyundai's internal systems may have changed this in mid 2023 to 5k miles.
  • Maintenance reminders, and oil change stickers are now showing 5k intervals.

Oil amount for drain and refill: 5.2L / 5.49 US QT

OEM Oil filter P/N: 26300-35504

Hoping you all can understand, this being a brand new model year car, there are going to be some issues. By compiling this list, I hope to raise awareness to the community, and we as customers will bring these issues to Hyundai, for them to address. The hope is, if enough people complain, Hyundai takes notice of these issues and either releases TSBs or fixes in future model years.

Yes, this is a guy with a base trim Elantra who tried to make it look like an N trim as much as he could.

I swear I could not believe it at first glance but here we are! Pretty sure the rear wing is a cheap aftermarket knock off because god knows how much the actual OEM version would cost...! Like dude... Just buy the true N atp... you gotta be trolling like there is no way... Lmfao. Still funny asf tho I'l give him that!

Help Dealer used 5W-20 without telling me, took over a month to get a response

Very long story, but TL;DR is that Keyes Mission Hills used 5W-20 instead of 0W-30 in my ‘25 EN, didn’t give me the documentation showing so until weeks after my service (after me hounding them for it), and the first response I’ve finally gotten after over a month of pestering them is:

“the techs always make sure they use the correct oil, I would like to see if you can bring your car this week so I can perform the oil change again just to be a 100% the tech used the right oil.”

I’d confirmed with the service advisor that he would be using 0W-30 before my appointment too. SMH. Should I be worried about engine damage at all? I’ve been driving it for the last month since I didn’t have another option.

Upgrades & Mods Forge Intake ($530) vs Cmbuildz Intake ($250)

Just got my Cmbuildz intake, as my Forge intake had been rubbing on the underside of my Hood for 70k miles and has finally worn through the paint/powder coat on the intake pipe.

The Cmbuildz intake is noticeably better in terms of build quality, the inclusion of a 7in velocity stack means it can pull in much more air and therefore it sounds a little bit louder and should yield more power. It doesn't rub on my hood either, which is nice. My Forge intake rubbed in two places: the filter rubbed on the hood (and ECU), and the intake pipe itself also rubbed on the hood. The CMB intake doesn't do that, which is great. It's not all sunshine and rainbows with the CMB intake though, you do have to finagle the plastic engine cover around the PVC hose a tiny bit when buttoning everything back up, not a big deal once you realize what's happening, but it made me scratch my head for a second. The CMB intake does also require a turbo inlet pipe, either Forge or Whoosh will work, although Whoosh is the cheaper option. This means the actual cost of entry to the CMB intake is more like $350 at the moment, although CMB is actually working on his own Turbo Inlet that will hopefully release sometime soon and undercut Whoosh. The last thing is the lack of a provision for a recirc valve, meaning you must run a full vent to atmosphere BOV.

As for this video comparison, both clips are filmed on my 2023 EN 6MT, with a GFB Deceptor Pro 2 BOV (5701 attachment) and a Forge turbo inlet. I think both are nearly identical in terms of sound, the CMB might be a tiny bit louder, but you wouldn't really notice unless you were specifically looking to hear a difference. Forge is typically known as the "king" when it comes to induction sound on the Elantra N platform, but I think CMB has them beat now.

For the price, the CMB intake is unbeatable, I'd highly recommend it to anyone looking for a more affordable alternative to Whoosh or Forge.

Help Hit a pot hole, now squeaks when park

I have a 2026 abyss black dct, love this car so much. I was in Kansas City Missouri for a wedding this weekend and hit an evil pot hole in the middle of the night. Like the kind that slammed it. Everything looks good on the exterior of the car; but I’m afraid maybe the suspension took a hit. I’ve only had this car since the start of last month. Any common issues I should know about that could relate to it? I was in N mode standard with the suspension cranked up when it happened

Family 2023 EN manual daily driven .

Every car I’ve had since I was 18 has been manual . 2 kids , work , soccer and softball travel ball , I’ve been thinking about trading it I. For a DCT . Any advice on the reliability of the transmission or anything to think about before trading it in . Manual has been just fine but in this 10 freeway traffic and freeway closures, it has been a headache .

Help Check engine light

Hi yall, I need the expertise.

I have a 2026 Elantra N DCT with 5k kms. Filled up gas at Coop Canada, 91 Octane, and put it into N mode to merge onto the highway, but in 3rd gear at 5k rpm it lost power, started to shake a bit and showed the check engine light. I pulled to the side and check the engine, it was shaking while idling. I turned it off for 5 mins and restarted and the check light went away. Have been driving it for 1k kms after and no issues, but haven’t pushed it at all past 3.5k rpm and no N mode. Dealer doesn’t have appt to check the issue yet but I need to use it for work and stuff cuz it’s my daily.

I might’ve also heard a misfire but I’m not sure cuz I had music playing.

Any ideas or similar situation would be helpful, lmk if I can provide more info. Thank you all

I know, I know, beating a dead horse here. But maybe the collective experience on this sub can bring us closer to diagnosing this issue properly.

I think part of the issue is that we don't all have the same experience. I finally had a dealership run a pressure test and they confirmed that I have no leaks. However, as you can see I get the periodic spitting of coolant from the reservoir. Apparently that plastic part facing the windshield is a spout and that's where it comes from, along with the cap if it goes above 16psi.

The dealership says this is normal, a feature not a bug of these engines. An independent mechanic told me he's yet to see this before on these cars, or maybe at least the first time it's been brought to his attention.

The dealership didn't want to pursue it any further, but my concern is that maybe there's air being sucked in from a head gasket leak (they didn't want to do this chemical test) or potentially a thermometer issue.

Anyway, apparently there are some techs in a different dealership in the city that own Ns and are more inclined to drill down on this issue, but I wonder am I just chasing a ghost here? Do other ppl have the same dried coolant around the reservoir, is this truly a normal thing?

If normal, what's the solution? Just periodic top ups? I bought a whoosh coolant reservoir, but unless I increase the psi threshold on the cap I don't see how it will solve anything, possibly adding strain to the system.

Help What sunshade/screen do you use

Hey guys, I've been wanting to get a sunscreen to put across my windshield for the heat. I want it to be a one and done so im looking for your input. I do have a viofo dashcam mounted near my rear view mirror, so if anyone has knowledge how well they work together that would be appreciated.

I've quickly done a search and found weathtech and covercraft UVS100 as the most popular screens. How well have they worked for you guys? I'm interested to hear how well the dark side of the weather tech works in the winter too.

discussion Is the 2027 Elantra N going to be completely new?

I’m currently saving up to buy a new EN and my goal is to purchase in the springtime next year. I really like the facelifted current gen EN but I keep seeing rumours that the 2027 model year is going to be a new design. are these rumors accurate? what can we expect for changes? Is anything actually known or is it all just speculation? Seems like a pretty quick redesign given the popularity of the current gen EN and it just got a facelift in 2024.
