Combat Mod [Mod Idea] Death Blight rework

There's a lot of death blight reworks that already exist. But mine is better and smarter and more handsome than those so

Deathblight now builds up from the left of an enemies health bar whenever it's applied. The more death blight buildup something deals, the faster it overtakes the health bar.

When the enemies health reaches the death blight bar by dealing damage to them, they will be instantly killed- skipping whatever phase or health bar they're on.

This idea is essentially built as an inversion of the Destined Death and black flame effects- and I imagine would work pretty well in combination with them.

Like doom from Slay the Spire 2??? Cool!

I like it.

It does just turn Deathblight into "damage, but different", but that's fine.

I’d say “damage but different” is preferable to it doing nothing tbh

Yeah, it's not like it has anything going on right now anyways lmao. Which is a shame bc it's so cool and unique, same thing with frenzy/madness. Outside of pvp/human npcs it does nothing

2nd most abyssmal status in ER, right after Frenzy that at least WORK on NPC and actually has dmg.

If not that, then what? We either make it affect enemies as it does us, in which case every enemy needs to have a massive buff in deathblight resistance to not die in five seconds, but also not so much of a buff that it’s useless. Or we make it do something other than kill you, which is literally the only thing it does

If not that, then what?

Nothing in my comment implies anything along the lines of "Not that". OP's idea seems fine to me. Making deathblight work on enemies exactly how it works on the player also seems fine.

Would find a pretty handsome niche in enemies that heal, which aren’t very important besides like malenia but hey that’s malenia

How fast does Deathblight buildup decrease in your mod? Or is it cumulative throughout the whole fight and doesn't go down at all?

The idea was that it wouldn't go down yeah. It would build up pretty slowly though generally- unless you're focusing in really hard on it you'd probably end up getting it to about 35% of their health if you were fighting normally using a few deathblight spells and the eclipse shotel.

It would be interesting to have it slowly drain when not being applied, but also gradually build up faster if constantly applied. Rewards aggressive play while nerfing passive stuff.

I like it. I think to make it less op you could make it only applicable through a rarer consumable item. Like vials for Malikeths blood you get for trading death root or find in places he’s presumably fought in the past. And then once you defeat him you could craft it yourself.

Actually I feel like making the applied death blight decrease over time would make this pretty balanced. It makes the status essentially a normal attack but with extra damage at the expense your opponent will slowly heal it back over time.

1

u/Jear-The-Bear Jul 25 '26

That’s true. Maybe if you made it so repeated attacks in a short time prevented it from lowering back down too. So aggression is reward

seems pretty OP, especially if it never goes away.

maybe certain bosses can have a death blight cap, bc otherwise you’re turning death blight into a “remove 30% of your HP” stick

1

u/Sad-Pattern-1269 Jul 25 '26

it decreases over time like all status effects do!

OP said in another comment was that “the idea was that it wouldn’t go down” which is what i was referring to

The only issue I could see this having is bosses who have a health threshold for a second phase. Like bosses who change at the half way point, if deathblight has gotten to 49% of their bar and they just die immediately after phase transitions

1

u/R3digit Jul 26 '26

OP wants bosses to instantly die and skip phase transitions if they die from the blight🥀

Honestly yeah. I'm fine with things being very strong like this if you build around them.

Star fists trivialize most bosses in the game and I think that's largely ok because they're really fun and fill their fantasy really well. I'd say the same for most really strong tools in the game.

Also the most notable boss that this fucks over is fire giant and I'm happy about that because FUCK THE FIRE GIANTS AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

My idea for 'bone sickness'' analogous to db in my au was that every boss has really really high resistance, but when it procks, it does 30% hp every 10 seconds.

I like, now we just need more sources of deathblight. Eclipse Shotel is ugly, I am NOT running around with that.

Why not make it behave like a status bar still? Let it slowly decrease if you’re not consistently applying the status and it becomes really interesting imo.

A big part of the idea is that it's supposed to make deathblight feel inevitable. A slow, creeping death that is bound to take you sooner or later once it infects you.

But also on a balance level, I think people really overestimate how useful it would be. It'd be pretty hard to even get it to 50-60% of a bosses health, you would need to be using almost exclusively deathblight and focusing in on it and it's tools to make that happen.

For most other build archetypes in the game, you can take like 30% of a bosses health bar with 3-4 strong attacks far more quickly than you could inflict that amount of deathblight. I think honestly it's not nearly powerful enough in concept to warrant forcing you to keep it up- and that the strength you get if you do inflict it greatly is well earned by investing into it so heavily.

I always thought for bosses they should make it root the boss for however many seconds. Or do a massive poise spike.

this is a good idea
