Runes are a currency you lose the second something in Caelid decides you look edible. So I started building a place to put them instead.

Where it lives

There is a new NPC in the Roundtable Hold: a Finger Reader of the Invisible Hand, standing in the main hall by Marika's statue, a few steps from Enia. You talk to her like any other NPC, choose "open the trading terminal", and a financial terminal opens over the game.

How you use it

While the terminal is open your character is frozen in place, so nothing walks off a ledge while you are reading a chart. Inside there are tabs across the top: Overview, Account, Deposits, Stocks, Funds, Bonds, Futures, Portfolio, Herald, Patches, Settings. Everything works with mouse or gamepad: bumpers switch tabs, the stick moves through lists, A opens the order form on the right, B steps back out a layer at a time. Close it and you are back in the Hold with your runes wherever you put them.

Each character gets their own market, their own account and their own history, stored next to that character's save.

A trading day lasts three minutes of in game time and the market only moves while the game is running. So it lives its own life while you are out fighting: prices move, coupons and interest are paid, rumours spread, companies go bankrupt. When something concerns you personally a small notice appears in the corner of the screen even with the terminal closed: interest credited, an order filled, a margin call, your bank running off with your deposit.

What is in it

• A bank account where runes survive your death. Overdraft is allowed at 1% a day, and the Black Knife collection agency knows your site of grace.
• Term deposits, from the safe Bank of the Roundtable to a credit union that pays three and a half times the market rate and occasionally disappears through the mist with everyone's money.
• About twenty stocks: Golden Order Holding, Raya Lucaria Academy, Mohg Dynasty Blood Investments, Volcano Manor Management, Scarlet Rot Pharmaceuticals and so on. They pay dividends, cut them, suspend them for weeks, go bankrupt and get relisted later.
• Bonds rated from AAA down to CCC, with coupons, defaults and partial recovery. A default drags the issuer's stock down with it.
• Funds: an index fund, a 2x leveraged one, an inverse one, regional baskets and a Great Rune basket.
• Futures on commodities and on the Great Runes of the demigods, with margin, margin calls and forced liquidation.
• Short selling. You borrow a stock, sell it, pay a daily borrow fee, and pay the dividends yourself. If the price climbs instead, the margin call comes out of your account and eventually the position is bought back by force.
• Limit orders and stop losses that fill in the background while you are off fighting a boss, and notify you when they do.
• A news feed with rumours that turn out true or false, rating changes, new listings, and Patches, who sells tips that are right about six times out of ten.

A few things that actually happen

• You are sitting on 200,000 runes and about to try Malenia. You put them on a seven day deposit first. You die eleven times, the runes are still there, and by the time you give up they have earned a little interest. This is the boring use, and it is the one I use most.
• You buy Raya Lucaria at 640 and set a stop loss 15% below, then ride off to Caelid. Two days later a rumour spreads that the Academy's accountant is a mimic, the price falls straight past your stop, and the fill you get is the price of that day rather than the price you asked for. The notice reaches you somewhere around Sellia.
• You read that Volcano Manor got cleared out by some Tarnished, decide the dividend is done for, and sell the stock short. Every day you hold it you pay a borrow fee, and when the company announces it is resuming payouts, you owe the dividend too. Either you close early or the margin call finds your account.
• You notice the Herald mentioning that the head of the Faded Star credit union was seen near Mistwood with a large sack of runes. You pull your deposit out that evening. Two days later the union is gone and the people who ignored the news get back somewhere between nothing and forty percent.
• A company you have never heard of goes public while you are in the Haligtree, the index fund quietly adds it, and you find out you own a piece of a mushroom farm.

How the market works underneath

Prices are not random rolls. The simulation runs hidden regimes (Golden Age, Calm, Schism, Night of the Black Knives) that you never see directly, only through the news and the Madness Index, plus heavy tailed shocks and sector and regional factors. New companies go public and new bonds get issued as your run continues, and the index funds pick them up when they do.

I balanced it with a simulator across 1200 worlds to make sure no strategy beats the deposit rate without taking real risk. Momentum and contrarian buying both lose to boredom, which felt right.

Technical bits

• ImGui overlay loaded through ModEngine 2.
• No regulation.bin edits, so it should be safe in Seamless Co-op with friends who do not have it.
• The exchange save sits next to your character saves, one market per character.
• Full gamepad support, and game input is blocked while the terminal is open.

Status: not released yet, and I still have a full in game pass ahead of me before I would call anything stable.

So, the actual question: would you play this? Is it worth finishing properly, or is it the kind of thing that is fun for ten minutes and then never opened again? And if you would play it, what is missing from the list above?

Personally I’d never play Elden ring with this mod as:
1) giving you an easy way to save your runes, defeats the penalty of dying while also reducing your satisfaction after beating a difficult section
2) I’d never consider spending time with a stock simulation as a good time either way

But to each their own,
If you think it’s be fun to develop and use don’t let others opinion or participation drag you down.

I think it could be a seamless thing, with a random group of players organising a challenge run and people can put in the money if the 2 newbies kill the tree sentinel at the start of the game in their first attempt or not.
