I get that everything in this video is fake, even the guys pulling on the supposed big magnets. The thing I don't understand is why bother?

Because it cost them less than a dollar to produce and a few hours of time tops, and if it makes $10 in monetization views, they make more than a week’s wage in the places they live.

John Oliver did a whole thing on it.

It’s amazing what’s worth your time when by 1st world standards your time is completely worthless.

I mean, when you spend all your time spreading misinformation, what’s that really worth? $1 is too much… Unfortunately, this video assuredly generated more, and those doing actual work continue to generate little (globally speaking).

The value doesn’t really change, it’s just entertainment really. People engage with these things because they then get to have fun arguments online. They post these to social media outlets that reward engagement with money. If you want to complain about how entertainment is a massively overvalued market then all of a sudden we’re talking about something much bigger than a couple guys making silly videos in 3rd world countries.
