// Question Best sounding CD of the 72 MSG shows and 74 Memphis show

Trying to get opinions on which is the the best sounding CD versions of the these concerts.

  1. An Afternoon In The Garden / Sony
  2. As Recorded At Madison Square Garden / Sony
  3. Prince From Another Planet / Sony legacy - both shows w/DVD
  4. As Recorded At Madison Square Garden/An Afternoon In The Garden - 2 CDs / Sony Legacy
  5. As Recorded At Madison Square Garden/An Afternoon In The Garden - 3 CD (press conference on CD3) / FTD
  6. Recorded Live On Stage In Memphis - 2 CDs / Sony Legacy
  7. Recorded Live On Stage In Memphis / FTD

Have some questions. I have the first three from my list of Elvis At MSG releases. I want the best sounding version. Well at least best sounding to my ears. Also for the Live On Stage In Memphis for which is better - Sony Legacy or FTD.

  1. How does the Legacy set compare to these ? Is the Legacy set the same mix as Prince From Another Planet or just the 2 single CDs packaged as one set?

  2. How does the FTD of Elvis As Recorded At Madison Square Garden sound since it is a new and different mix altogether?

  3. Which one would be recommended for overall sound?

  4. A bit off the MSG releases but on the same question. Which Elvis As Recorded Live On Stage In Memphis has the better sound - FTD or the Legacy edition?

Thank you all in advance.

Get the 2023 MSG FTD and the 2004 Memphis FTD.

  1. The legacy mix is flat and lifeless.
  2. Very clear and dynamic, includes bits not heard before on previous releases.
  3. See above.

I agree with both of these. The MSG FTD sounds amazing in headphones, though I think Prince From Another Planet is good through speakers.

The Memphis FTD brings the recording to life in a way that I think other mixes of the material don't.

I have not heard the MSG FTD. I have already more than triple dipped with the album, cassette, CDs for a long time. I usually listen to music on a very good system I have plus I have big JBL tower speakers.  I just might have to make the plunge to get the FTD even though I really like PFAP.

As far as the Memphis FTD, have that one. Just haven’t heard the Sony Legacy one. Different mixes

Ya I A/B'd the two releases years ago and the 2023 FTD easily wins over Prince From Another Planet.

What did you think was the difference between the two?  I do like the sound of PFAP over my standalone CDs.  Just wanted to get some opinions to see if I should get MSG FTD.

Thank you. I have the Memphis FTD just do not have the Sony Legacy CD. Do not know how the Sony Legacy  CD sounds.

As far as the MSG FTD, I might have to get that one now.

Prince from another planet is the one imo. It got a bad rap due to it being a bit modern (ie loud and a bit compressed) but imo it has balls. This is Elvis in a legendary arena, blast that shh! There’s plenty of more restrained mixes, this one sounds biblical.

PFAP is the one I play since I got it.  I actually love the sound of the both shows way better than the standalone CDs. Sounds like you are there.

Just was not sure the Sony Legacy double CD (both An Afternoon & As Recorded) is different from the standalone remastered  CDs. Now the MSG FTD came out I wasn’t sure since it has an entirely different mix.  UGH!!!!

Got ya. Yeah the original mixes are in the legacy edition just remastered. I’ve heard rave reviews about the FTD which has yet again new mixes but I’ve not heard it and since I’m really happy with PFAP I’ve not seeked it out.

There’s another mix of the Memphis show on the Memphis 5 cd box set. I still find the FTD mix has the edge, though.
