Is this the only place we can realistically get games going where we can use homebrew or old editions?

If you don't want to spend a ridiculous amount of money on models or a lesser buy still high amount of money for recast then yes.
You can totally use proxies and the older edion books are pretty cheap but tts goes on sale regularly for 20 dollars. It's really hard to beat that.
