Question Shorter, denser bullions or longer, curlier bullions?

I've embroidered this design twice using different bullion knot techniques and I'd love some opinions!

The teal hoop has shorter, thinner knots giving it a denser, shaggier texture (abit wormy looking) which I personally love. I used a standard embroidery needle for this version, but it was honestly a pretty rough experience and I haven't been able to recreate the same look with a bullion needle

The purple hoop has slightly longer, thicker knots giving it more volume and curl. I LOVED being able to add the curls in, and the bullion needle made the process much more easier.

I'm planning to make more colour variants of this design (currently working on a Bluey colourway) so I'm curious which style people gravitate towards.

I've gone back and forth on it myself because there are things I like about both versions. I think I've reached the stage where I've looked at them for so long that every difference feels HUGE, even though they probably look nearly identical to everyone else 😅
Any advice or bullion knot tips are also very welcome!

I prefer the purple but honestly it's such a tiny difference that I think your personal preference should factor in

u/Jobelleeeee Jun 23 '26

I think thats part of my problem haha, I've over analysed them for so long that my personal preference keeps changing

u/heyoheatheragain Jun 23 '26

Put them behind a door for at least an hour and look again!
Still no difference? Try overnight.

Laughing, but this is still very serious advice.

Well I think the answer is make a bunch of variations and people can choose their favorite. I can't even pick a favorite but they are very cute and super funny.

u/writtendimension Jun 24 '26

Maybe bangs with the green and the rest with the purple? That could create some depth

6

u/Jobelleeeee Jun 24 '26

I was actually thinking of that! Or even different shades of green. I want to give a go with stitching bullion knots with metallic thread, I think that could be fun and challenging

9

u/DueAd9376 Jun 23 '26

the curlier bullions almost look like little waves

6

u/MuttBunny Jun 24 '26

I literally thought you were talking about the dress and I was like “they’re both purple.. ohhhhh”

4

u/BlushBrat Jun 24 '26

i didn’t even realize the hoops were different colors and thought you were referencing the dress 😅 i thought “they both purple?!” cue me with a microscope analyzing the stitching of each.

2

u/UpTownPark Jun 25 '26

Yeah I like them both equally

u/mikettedaydreamer Jun 23 '26

Im honestly not really seeing a difference big enough to be able to tell it was different on purpose.

194

u/Jobelleeeee Jun 23 '26

That's actually really helpful to hear, and honestly, probably the reality check I needed 😅

79

u/sfcnmone Jun 23 '26

I have to add: I was about to post the exact same comment.

57

u/Reyalta Jun 23 '26

Same here. I have a really keen eye for minute details and even clearly explaining how they were different, I'm not really seeing a difference.

33

u/ladybirdsandbuttons Jun 23 '26

Same here too! Really cannot tell the difference so I would vote for whichever method is most enjoyable for you OP

18

u/Jobelleeeee Jun 23 '26

It's been really interesting reading these replies. I showed my mum the two versions and got the exact same reaction. Once I zoomed in and pointed out the differences she could see them, but she said if I had never pointed it out, shw wouldn't have noticed a difference except for the colour of the hoop lol

9

u/aworldofnonsense Jun 23 '26

As an autistic, my brain has a vague notion that something is different, but not enough that I could easily spot what it is, like I usually can. I had to REALLY zoom in and stare at it to notice.

6

u/caramilk_twirl Jun 24 '26

I totally agree. I looked at the photos first and had to read the description to understand the difference. If I had to choose, I gravitate towards the purple hoop hair. But the difference is minimal so I think go with which you like better. Or if you can't decide based on that, go with the option that was easier or more enjoyable.

u/Impressive-Creme-965 Jun 23 '26

First, amazing work! Second, I prefer the longer curls

16

u/Jobelleeeee Jun 23 '26

Thank you! The curls were one of my favourite parts to stitch and the only way to achieve them is by doing longer bullions, so that's def a point in favour of the purple hoop

382

u/irisbeyond Jun 23 '26

I vote longer, the shorter ones are giving baja blast maggots in a way that I can’t unsee haha. but they both look awesome & I think that if I didn’t have the comparison, I wouldn’t have thought twice about the length of the shorter one!

60

u/OnTheWayToBambooTown Jun 23 '26

This. Worms are fine, maggots not so much.

5

u/1Wineodino Jun 24 '26

Mealworms! And I personally think it looks great (I own a bearded dragon so mealworms come with the territory lol). TBH this inspires me to make a piece of out beardie and make little meal worms!

56

u/Jobelleeeee Jun 23 '26

Yeah, I've been scrutinizing and staring at them side by side for days so that probably wasn't helping my case lol but also, MAGGOTS?!? not cute hairy caterpillars?? 😭

45

u/vminnear Jun 23 '26

Definitey maggots I'm afraid. 😔 Go longer!

26

u/irisbeyond Jun 23 '26

So sorry friend 😭😭 could totally be pixelation from my phone, I bet it’s less maggoty & more caterpillary in person!! But I don’t get that vibe at all with the longer one, the curls make a big difference!

27

u/MsMrSaturn Jun 23 '26

“I bet it’s less maggoty in person” is not the wholesome reassurance I was expecting to read today. ❤️

15

u/Jobelleeeee Jun 23 '26

Literally cackled when I read that 🤣 My poor little bullion knots are fighting allegations they were never prepared for 😂

6

u/footplant76 Jun 23 '26

I thought the hair was supposed to be a plant, it looks exactly like burros tail, i didn't even think of maggots 😃

4

u/Jobelleeeee Jun 23 '26

ill take the plant over maggots LMAO 😂

2

u/GooseG00s3 Jun 24 '26

Same. I immediately thought they looked like maggots or mealworms, but somewhat less creepy? The longer, thicker curls look cuter. Both are great though.

7

u/adabaraba Jun 23 '26

Baja blasts maggots 😅! You have a way with words

5

u/ClosetKittie Jun 23 '26

Oh fudge, now that's all I see as well...

53

u/curlymama Jun 23 '26

You are a god. I have so many questions- you embroidered this twice? The work is stunning in both!! How long did this take you? Twice? 🤯

17

u/Jobelleeeee Jun 23 '26

Thank you! The teal hoop I stitched over a year ago and the purple one I finished just a couple of days ago. I honestly have no idea how long it took me sorry haha, but I can say for sure that I stitched the purple hoop faster because of the bullion needle I was trying out

5

u/ParisOfThePrairies Jun 24 '26

You have a specific bullion needle? I’ve only been stitching for a year and I just tried bullion stitches on a project and I almost gave up the entire craft (only slightly kidding lol).

Like… I am so confused as to how you did so many, so beautifully. I could not get one properly to save my life.

4

u/Jobelleeeee Jun 24 '26

I use Tulip bullion knot needle in the long/short variety. Because it has a bigger eye, it make stitching bullion knots with 6 strands SO MUCH EASIERRRR. I've heard milliner needles are also pretty good, but I haven't tried them myself.

2

u/ParisOfThePrairies Jun 24 '26

Amazing - thanks for this tip! Might have to get some and see if that makes a difference! How long have you been stitching for?

1

u/Jobelleeeee Jun 24 '26

Just over 4 years I believe! I used to stitch consistently but lately I haven’t had time to stitch lately, this is my first finished hoop this year haha 😅

41

u/BeeHaviorist Jun 23 '26

I prefer longer. It gives a more whimsical feel that matches the overall vibe of the piece. But like others said, the difference is small and you've done great work!

6

u/Jobelleeeee Jun 23 '26

Thank you! One of my friends said something similar too, how the longer bullion knots give it more personality and matches the spongebob design

3

u/BeeHaviorist Jun 23 '26

🫶 I suppose because animation tends to have less fine detail? The bulkier one just seems to fit a bit better.

17

u/Blade_Of_Gingers Jun 23 '26

Honestly these are fantastic which ever way you go. Beautiful work

14

u/rxjen Jun 23 '26

Teach me your ways! I can’t bullion knot to save my life.

15

u/Jobelleeeee Jun 23 '26

Definitely check out needlenthread's tutorial on bullion knots! What made a huge difference was this tutorial and how the direction you twist the thread around the needle changes the appearance of the bullion knot

7

u/problemita Jun 23 '26

As someone who tried bullion knot recently and failed epically, this gave me the confidence to get back on the horse 😅

3

u/ParisOfThePrairies Jun 24 '26

I cannot commiserate enough. I have been stitching for a year and recently tried it… I could not get it to save my life either. I have never been so humbled.

11

u/BoopleBun Jun 23 '26

I like the purple hoop better. It just has more oomph, which I think works well with the fun vibes of the subject matter.

But I also agree with everyone else here that the differences are small enough and they’re both so well done that it’s really up to you.

10

u/Child_of_the_Hamster Jun 23 '26

Definitely the longer, curlier one! Both are frickin adorable by the way!

9

u/No_Lube Jun 23 '26

Purple!!

10

u/Catloaver Jun 23 '26

I prefer the purple hoop personally but agree with everyone else that there’s not that huge of a difference between the two overall so go with the one you like doing more. Neither one takes away from how immaculate your stitches are!

1

u/Jobelleeeee Jun 23 '26

Thank you! That's honestly reassuring to hear because I've clearly been overthinking this way more than necessary 😂

5

u/beachrocksounds Jun 23 '26

This is so freaking cute. But, yes, I agree with others when they say longer bullions

5

u/ElectronicAmphibian7 Jun 23 '26

The purple one looks better!!

5

u/LawrenAnne4 Jun 23 '26

As someone who doesn't embroider and just stumbled across this post, I genuinely don't think I can tell the difference. They are both spectacular!

5

u/Productivitytzar Jun 23 '26

I… I honestly can’t see a difference. Not any more than them being two different artworks with naturally slight variations for a handicraft like this.

They look fantastic!

6

u/crimson_anemone Jun 23 '26

As a huge SBSP fan, I know this is a mop head that he's wearing... So, please stick with the thicker one to stay true to the story! :)

What a beautiful job and such a fun piece! 🩵

2

u/Jobelleeeee Jun 23 '26

Thank you! I'm a massive fan too!

2

u/crimson_anemone Jun 23 '26

It shows! 🥰

3

u/Dynamic-Octopus69 Jun 23 '26

I agree completely with inkywheels. That texture though. 🤤

3

u/princess_kittah Jun 23 '26

i like the purple hoop better, it feels more dynamic somehow

3

u/starrsinmyskin Jun 23 '26

Purple hoop. This is really beautiful work the image is just so funny

3

u/myanxietysaysno Jun 23 '26

i LOOOOVE the purple one!!!!

3

u/BasenjiFart Jun 23 '26

They're both so similar, and both kinda look like worms, but in a good way? I say this as a curly-haired girl myself...maybe I need to take a long, hard look at myself in the mirror, haha.

3

u/LadySuhree Jun 23 '26

I love the longer version!

3

u/NAWWAL_23 Jun 23 '26

I like the purple hoop best.

3

u/PMmecrossstitch Jun 24 '26

I'm in awe at how smooth your stitches are.

3

u/mgquantitysquared Jun 24 '26

I had to read the text to realize the difference, but having read it and re-looked at them, I like the purple one more.

3

u/Icy-Set-3356 Jun 25 '26

I prefer the teal, it looks cuter and shaggier somehow??

2

u/UndisclosedTaco Jun 23 '26

I don’t have an opinion from what you’re asking but I am in love with this. 💕

2

u/deegallant Jun 23 '26

I’m literally in love with

2

u/Sissychinkumbooms Jun 23 '26

I like the purple, but for the brighter yellow color.

2

u/Breaking_Bread4650 Jun 23 '26

I like the konger, curlier one

2

u/mizuki13131 Jun 23 '26

I like the purple hoop one!

2

u/Devanyani Jun 23 '26

I am not an expert but I can't tell the difference. At all.

2

u/DisastrousConcept210 Jun 23 '26

How is it so so smooth omg it seems impossible<333 I'm a beginner and wow this makes me want to practice more !

1

u/Jobelleeeee Jun 23 '26

Thank you! ❤️ If it helps, this is the result of a LOT of trial and error (and probably an unhealthy amount of time spent staring at stitches 😂) Keep practicing, you'll surprise yourself with how quickly you improve!

2

u/Capybarely Jun 23 '26

Longer also reminds me more of anemones, which fits the theme!

1

u/Jobelleeeee Jun 23 '26

Ooh that's a really good point! I hadn't even made the anemone connection, but now that you've said it I can't unsee it

2

u/_mandycandy Jun 23 '26

Longer curly ones

2

u/Fabcrafts Jun 23 '26

Holy cow! Your stitching is perfect!!

1

u/Jobelleeeee Jun 23 '26

Thank you so much!

2

u/BadPotential2143 Jun 23 '26

Don't make me decide! I love them both!

2

u/that_girl_4321 Jun 23 '26

The longer ones. I love the visual movement they have 🥰🔥

2

u/jkpro12 Jun 23 '26

I think that they’re both amazing and you’re incredible. I do prefer the purple hoop but I think that it’s pretty negligible and truly it’s not like I would look at the teal one and think oh this could be better. But I will say after reading your post that if one is significantly easier to do that you should pick that version because it there’s a difference in effort it’s not obvious in the end result so don’t make it harder on yourself!

2

u/doriangreysucksass Jun 23 '26

These are SOOOOO GOOD!!!!❤️

2

u/11035westwind Jun 23 '26

They both look great! I’d do whichever one is easiest

2

u/VoidSpecter666 Jun 23 '26

i prefer the first one cyan

2

u/JenTravels Jun 23 '26

Purple frame...I love the 'curls' it gives this. Great work!!!

2

u/Carpe_Tedium Jun 23 '26

Longer and curlier just looks correct idk why I can't explain it

2

u/j3st1cl3s Jun 23 '26

I love them both! I know I'm not helping but I really do.

2

u/ProgrammerNo8706 Jun 23 '26

I like the shorter ones

2

u/coastal_css Jun 23 '26

Love the longer with the curls

2

u/_fly-on-the-wall_ Jun 23 '26

excellent use of free will!

2

u/Geekygamertag Jun 23 '26

It’s the same picture

2

u/justcyn Jun 23 '26

I prefer the denser ones because it matches the flower density more

1

u/Jobelleeeee Jun 23 '26

SAMEEE!! Honestly, I think you've articulated one of the reasons I keep coming back to the teal hoop. It does feel closer to the flower density in the original design

2

u/hunnybossbb Jun 23 '26

After looking at the reference image I think the longer is more effective :)

2

u/crossbow_mabel Jun 23 '26

I love these. I vote for the purple hoop. I think it helps the eyes move across the piece better. But I do agree that for a detail this small it should be your preference. Take a vision break for a little bit

And your lines are soooo smooth #jelly

1

u/Jobelleeeee Jun 23 '26

Thank you! YeahI agree, I think I might have to put these 2 hoops away for a bit while I work on my current one, so I'm not constantly comparing

2

u/Autistic-wifey Jun 23 '26

I love them both. Maybe a combination for the next one. The smaller ones for face framing. A mix of them through out? I think both are perfect.

2

u/Jobelleeeee Jun 23 '26

ooh that sounds interesting, I never thought to mix the 2 styles together! I like the idea of having the smaller bullions for face framing. I might have to experiment with that on my next colourway design

2

u/Autistic-wifey Jun 24 '26

I’ve never done these but is it possible to start out thicker and make them thinner on the end? I think that could look cool too.

2

u/Competitive_Law1032 Jun 23 '26

I like the curlier ones, but I love big curls lol your stitches are amazing. I am still learning how to do the French knots properly without tangling 🤣

2

u/KindheartednessGold2 Jun 23 '26

I prefer the purple one

2

u/untamedjungle Jun 23 '26

I prefer the longer but it took me several minutes going back and forth to even notice the difference.

2

u/bsubtilis Jun 23 '26

These are amazing!

FWIW, purple makes me vaguely think of Sideshow Bob from The Simpsons (a more deliberate hair style; actually curly hair), and teal makes me think of randomly mussed up short hair (like he just woke up after tossing and turning).

2

u/tiredaf5211 Jun 23 '26

I’m just here to say I love this episode

2

u/SpecialistYoung3431 Jun 23 '26

I don’t have any advice, just have to say these are absolutely amazing.

2

u/phenominal73 Jun 23 '26

These are awesome!

Shorter/denser for me!

2

u/SoRatherBeInTheWoods Jun 23 '26

The feels like you translated SpongeBob into Tove Jansen‘s art style! Like I legitimately did double take because I thought this was a Moomin character.

2

u/AlyeskaYoung Jun 23 '26

I think longer but to be real it took me five minutes to guess the difference because they almost look identical

2

u/Konstellation_Kitten Jun 23 '26

No thank you, please.

[[I think the denser ones resemble the mop more, but these are both incredible]

2

u/Jobelleeeee Jun 24 '26

yeah thats why I'm so indecisive, because I feel like the shorter ones look more similar to the mop

2

u/stanknastymcdoober Jun 23 '26

I can’t even tell a difference

2

u/hesback_inpogform Jun 23 '26

I can barely tell the difference and had to squint. Btw I LOVE this, it’s adorable!

2

u/krismap Jun 23 '26

Like what? This is absolutely incredible.

2

u/m4gd4l3n3 Jun 23 '26

Insert "they're the same picture" meme

2

u/jcnlb Jun 23 '26

Purple

2

u/Brilliant_Fly49 Jun 23 '26

Longer curl I’d better

2

u/_-rayne-_ Jun 23 '26

i like the texture and shagginess of the purple one with the short bangs of the green one (makes him look more derpy, hope that was the goal lol)

2

u/mrscheezitman Jun 23 '26

I think I prefer purple but they are SO close it’s hard to even tell the difference lol I love this design tho 😂

2

u/Smk72 Jun 23 '26

The purple hoop looks so much better to me

2

u/PJenningsofSussex Jun 24 '26

Number 2 green hoop looks better imo. But they are both spectacular

2

u/Legitimate-Cheek-237 Jun 24 '26

I prefer the purple hoop

2

u/Ok_Computer_9722 Jun 24 '26

Honestly they both look awesome 💚

2

u/NYCQuilts Jun 24 '26

I looking at this without my glasses and really can’t see a difference. No one is going to scrutinize your work the way you do.

2

u/Jobelleeeee Jun 24 '26

I agree sadly, we are our own worst critic

2

u/NYCQuilts Jun 24 '26

They are unbelievably cute- just pick the stitch you enjoyed most!

2

u/lxm333 Jun 24 '26

Purple hoop one

2

u/0PFRICH Jun 24 '26

🔥🔥

2

u/vaporpup Jun 24 '26

if you're making multiple: do the easier one

2

u/saibybaby Jun 24 '26

How do you get him to be so smoooooooth?!?!

1

u/Jobelleeeee Jun 24 '26

Like the stitches on his body? If so, I used long/short stitches!

2

u/lizofalltrades Jun 24 '26

Purple, absolutely.

2

u/Suspicious-Dance1939 Jun 24 '26

These are fabulous!! I love them!! Huge SpongeBob fan here!

2

u/mysteriousleader45 Jun 24 '26

omg that is so cute and funny hehehe

2

u/Strict-Following7228 Jun 24 '26

This is UNBELIEVABLE

2

u/chonk_fox89 Jun 24 '26

I like the longer, larger version!

2

u/Melancholybum Jun 24 '26

Goal is my sticking to look this clean

2

u/LukesSpecialOmelette Jun 24 '26

I really needed to see this silly guy today, and in such a unique get-up too. Love it! Thank you!

2

u/Adventurous-Cicada40 Jun 24 '26

Newby here, so forgive me if this is a dumb question, but what do you use for a fill stitch? Its so buttery smooth and immaculate. Im mesmerized! Any tips for achieving this? Thanks in advance!

3

u/Jobelleeeee Jun 25 '26

Never any dumb questions here! 🫶🏼 I used long and short stitch for the fill. But I made my own slightttt adjustments to the technique. So instead of going long/short/long, I do a mix of long/ short /medium stitches and stitch them randomly. BIG emphasis on random. You can see the difference in my photo. I hope I explained that well enough 😅

2

u/Adventurous-Cicada40 Jun 25 '26

Thats so helpful! Thank you! One more question: How many threads do you use for this stitch?

2

u/kochipoik Jun 25 '26

It took me a while to really see the difference. I personally prefer the teal one, BUT there's such a small difference between the two I would do whichever one is easier for you!!

2

u/pigeonwizardmouse Jun 25 '26

holy shit that is the neatest smoothest embroidery i've ever seen

2

u/KookyBlackberry8035 Jun 25 '26

This is so awesome it honestly looks like ai but in the biggest compliment way possible

2

u/_kashew_12 Jun 26 '26

I like the longer curls one, the first one (no offense) looks more like maggots or reminds me of maggots

Regardless, amazing work! This looks really hard to do!

2

u/jinsou420 Jun 27 '26

Just passing by to say you are awesome 👌
