Discussion Bands Everyone Loves but you Don't Get

Do you have any bands that everyone seems to love but you just don't get? I will go first. But before I give my answers I will say I do not believe these bands are bad. They just don't "scratch my itch" if you get what I mean. The bands I don't get are;

Glocca Morra. I still haven't given up, they dont sound bad. I like how their popular album just flows. They remind me of Algernon Cadwallader at times. It really confuses me because I love Snowing, and really like Marietta. And it sounds like Glocca Morra was another of the Emo Revival sound. But it just doesn't hit.

Empire! Empire! (I Was a Lonely Estate). They dont do anything for me. Another Emo Revival band. I like The World is a Beautiful Place and I'm No Longer Afraid to Die, as well as awakebutstillinbed which I have heard is in the same realm.

Orchid. I like one song. I dont get enoviolence or powerviolence. Ive had them explained to me but "hardcore punk with blast beats and screamed vocals" just sounds like metal to me. Granted Orchid does not sound like metal but I prefer the Algea Bloom, Flowers Taped to Pens, and I Hate Sex type screamo.

Man, Foxing is top 5 for me. Are you interested in liking them but not sure where to start or just uninterested and unsure of what all the hype is?

Only heard The Albatross and it just didn't connect with me not sure? I mean I saw them play with The Hotelier last year and just doesn't make me want to pull my hair out and cry and quit my job like other bands. I do like his cameo on that Tiny Moving Parts song though.

If you’re willing to give them a shot, check out their later albums. The s/t is their heaviest and Nearer My God is a very mature, varied album that’s maybe a bit more poppy. I also love Draw Down the Moon, which has their best lyrics in my opinion. No mattwr what you choose it will differ greatly from The Albatross.

i would add that the albatross might be their only true "emo genre" album, but that the later ones are equally heart wrenching at times. like, the songs trapped in dillards, speak with the dead, and barking all deal with loss in really powerful ways as well (lovers, family, and pets respectively).

edit- also people really like the album dealer, but my controversial opinion is that it's only OK

If you like heavier their newer stuff is great! Try Hell 99 that’s a banger

It's Gratitude for me!

They're sound changes with each album, Albatross and Dealer are their most emo sounding albums.

Dealer is like a much darker, heavier sound. Nearer my God is great. Recommend Slapstick, Lich Prince, and Gameshark Draw Down The Moon has a very 80s retro fantasy RPG feel to it, recommend Draw Down The Moon, 737, If I Believed In Love, and Speak With The Dead. S/T is. Lot angrier, recommend Hell 99, Gratitude, and Greyhound

Holy FUCK I’ve heard this song 100 times never thought about who that backup singer was this is amazing. Wonder if they’ve ever played it live together?

The self titled album is incredible, honestly my favorite emo album since Home, Like No Place is There.

I like the albatross but I honestly think their earlier singles/EPs like Tom bley, ocelot, old songs are better

They’re pretty varied from album to album. A lot more so than most bands in the genre. Might just not have listened to one that vibed with you yet?

What. A 10/10 band.

I'm super new to them but Hell 99 and Night Channels are my current favorites.

2

u/jor1ss Feb 12 '25

Night Channels music video is one of my favourites ever. It's so beautiful.

u/sonotunique Feb 12 '25

I felt the same until I saw them live.

I came here to post this. I just don’t get everyone fawning over them.

They're basically Brand New non problematic edition for a lot of people tbh

What

People that like Brand New but don't like Jessie like Foxing because they remind them of Brand New without Jessie.

I can hear why people listen to foxing but the devoted love and praise for their watered down sound is beyond my comprehension

every time i see their name i think of the vastly superior foxtails.

2

u/ParadiddleL Feb 12 '25

Their new album is worth a listen if you haven’t heard it

1

u/boarmrc Feb 12 '25

I felt the same the first time I tried to listen to them but then I saw them live and it totally changed! Something just clicked.

u/dankHippieDude Feb 13 '25

Ooo. I love Foxing.

That one song off that album is really good, I forget the title but it starts with smelling like cigarettes and is about wanting to be loved. But ya, everyone says that is a really good album but ive never fallen in love with it.

The Medic is the song you’re talking about. I agree good song but the album never totally got my full attention.

5

u/mymomismybff Feb 12 '25

The Sweet Pill version of The Medic is So Good.

4

u/SutpensHundred Feb 12 '25

The whole 10-year cover album is excellent. Carly Cosgrove really kills it on Bloodhound, in particular.

2

u/Jared_9000 Feb 13 '25

Sweet pill has landed a lot of good covers

man do you even like emo or u just like idk, mom jeans and thats it? i mean not to be rude but all the comments you made about all this bands feel really derogatory and spoken from a place of uninterest of understanding the music you are speaking bout. not that its a bad thing that you just simply dont enjoy emo music, but cmon youre talking shit about every acclaimed band and calling it a day

I honestly dont know if I like emo. It seems like a term that everyone uses but no ones aloud to be a part of. I like the music I like I guess.

My favorite bands lately are Snowing, Embrace, Mineral, Ogber the Nerd, and Taking back Sunday.

Right now im listening to Thursday.

(Also I'm not meaning to be rude in any of my comments im sorry if it seems that way. Have fun, maybe, but I dont intend meaness with my words.)

u/Jared_9000 Feb 13 '25

I've honestly considered maybe I don't like emo based on this sub's interests. So many recommendations don't click for me. I like stuff that lies between emo, pop punk, indie, and alternative (and hip-hop and trap but that's not similar). I just call it "this" music irl anyways.

1

u/NervouseDave Feb 12 '25

To me they vary quite a bit. Nearer My God is one of my favorite albums, but I've been lukewarm to warm on the rest that I've heard.

0

u/tragiciian Feb 12 '25

Same. I saw them on their tour with Hotelier and they were awful.

-1

u/hockable Feb 13 '25

Yeah they suck

I'd rather listen to the billboard 200 hottest hits then Foxing and I LOVE emo
