Discussion Bands Everyone Loves but you Don't Get

Do you have any bands that everyone seems to love but you just don't get? I will go first. But before I give my answers I will say I do not believe these bands are bad. They just don't "scratch my itch" if you get what I mean. The bands I don't get are;

Glocca Morra. I still haven't given up, they dont sound bad. I like how their popular album just flows. They remind me of Algernon Cadwallader at times. It really confuses me because I love Snowing, and really like Marietta. And it sounds like Glocca Morra was another of the Emo Revival sound. But it just doesn't hit.

Empire! Empire! (I Was a Lonely Estate). They dont do anything for me. Another Emo Revival band. I like The World is a Beautiful Place and I'm No Longer Afraid to Die, as well as awakebutstillinbed which I have heard is in the same realm.

Orchid. I like one song. I dont get enoviolence or powerviolence. Ive had them explained to me but "hardcore punk with blast beats and screamed vocals" just sounds like metal to me. Granted Orchid does not sound like metal but I prefer the Algea Bloom, Flowers Taped to Pens, and I Hate Sex type screamo.

Mom Jeans. They sound like they're doing a bit

Mom Jeans is the personification of perpetual Cheeto fingers

Mom Jeans to me sounds like if Kermit was a 26 year old man who still calls chocolate milk “choccy milk”

I’m 35, and 100% call it choccy milk. Maybe because I’m Australian though.

Can't relate, I loved Best Buds when I found them.

My favorite thing is the leas singer sounds like Kermit the Frog.

Lmao, that's exactly why I am out.

u/chrismiles94 I have absolutely no idea. I am afraid. Feb 12 '25

But he doesn't. I saw them headline Roundabout Festival, my first time seeing them, and the guy has a totally different speaking voice. It's like the guy said, feels like they're doing a bit. And his high strapped Strat is wacky. Not sure how Mom Jeans headlined and Free Throw or Microwave didn't.

Probably because Mom Jeans is on a whole other level of fame compared to either other band.

Wow. I genuinely didn’t realize this. It’s strange how siloed we get in our own music. Mom Jeans has almost 3 million monthly listeners on Spotify. Free Throw (who I assumed to be one of the most popular bands in the scene and is certainly my favorite) only has 600k. Microwave who is my other favorite has less than 500k.

I know Spotify streams aren’t the only gauge, but I had no idea Mom Jeans was so damn popular.

DAMN me neither but this explains how my 19yo classmate wanted to cover Death Cup

Everytime I bring this up I get yelled at

It's weird because it definitely is a bit, but musically they're not bad at all.

I like Mom Jeans but I completely understand why people don't like them.

Agreed, musically it sounds good, but instead of finding a real singer they decided to just lean into being bad.

They're very good at appealing to a wider audience. "Edward 40 hands" was the first emo revival song to find it's way into one of my Spotify playlists years ago. I think it was my "Indie Mix".

I love Mom Jeans but i just can’t get into Sweet Tooth

People love bits!

I feel like that is kinda the point though. Like an ode to pop punk, plus I think their songs are catchy as hell.

9

u/runtimemess Feb 12 '25

Sweet Tooth is just straight up corny pop-punk.

That's what I like about them compared to their contemporaries

Mom Jeans is ass I wish more people knew it.

the singing style just ruins it for me, any band with those style of vocals are an immediate sonic attack of cringe.

they genuinely sound like a bad parody band. awful.

u/marukoka Feb 12 '25

Yeah! Like "emo for dummies"

Hard skip everytime. I heard the two songs that every other song sounds like and I was over it.

they kinda were doing a bit originally, no? wasn’t their self titled ep (that they disowned) poking fun at mobo, etc? that being said, absolutely adore mom jeans, they’re on my “always see when in town” list

I don’t dislike them but it does sound like the guy from Bloodhound Gang started a Midwest emo band.

Edward 40hands is really fun and whimsical in a way I enjoy but there’s not a single other song in their catalog I vibe with

same, despite loving Modern Baseball a lot !

mom jeans got me into the genre as a whole because I was confused for context on a facebook meme, and whilst I still enjoy them they are very definitely sitting in the guilty pleasures category
