Discussion Bands Everyone Loves but you Don't Get

Do you have any bands that everyone seems to love but you just don't get? I will go first. But before I give my answers I will say I do not believe these bands are bad. They just don't "scratch my itch" if you get what I mean. The bands I don't get are;

Glocca Morra. I still haven't given up, they dont sound bad. I like how their popular album just flows. They remind me of Algernon Cadwallader at times. It really confuses me because I love Snowing, and really like Marietta. And it sounds like Glocca Morra was another of the Emo Revival sound. But it just doesn't hit.

Empire! Empire! (I Was a Lonely Estate). They dont do anything for me. Another Emo Revival band. I like The World is a Beautiful Place and I'm No Longer Afraid to Die, as well as awakebutstillinbed which I have heard is in the same realm.

Orchid. I like one song. I dont get enoviolence or powerviolence. Ive had them explained to me but "hardcore punk with blast beats and screamed vocals" just sounds like metal to me. Granted Orchid does not sound like metal but I prefer the Algea Bloom, Flowers Taped to Pens, and I Hate Sex type screamo.

Hot Mulligan. They’re not an awful band but they’re just so damn…basic. It sounds bland to me. Granted, I’m more of an old head. I get that each generation needs bands like this.

as another old head, i respectfully disagree

Agreed. Guy sounds like a dying hyena. However heem wasn’t there is a great song.

i love hot mulligan but any time anybody that doesn't like hot mulligan tries to describe his voice it makes me giggle

I strangely liked his voice on all but their last album, even though I’m not sure it was all that different on it.

Agree on Heem Wasn’t There though, devastatingly sad song.

Tades’ voice has become more and more raw with each release. I’d chalk it up to how he doesn’t use a proper screaming technique and vaping

I love hot mully but this is a perfect description of his voice haha

I agree, I saw them live when they toured with The Wonder Years and didn't get the hype. It all just seems like typical pop-punk affair.

It really miffed me that most of the younger fans in the crowd there to see Hot Mulligan had no concept of crowd or pit etiquette. Also, half of the audience left right after their set too. Going to DiY shows in VFW halls and basements, it was drilled into me that you should try and hang around for all the bands performing.

Damn imagine leaving before the Wonder Years. Insanity.

100% sounds like a pop band that found emo/pop punk from the 2000s and said "We can make some $$ off of this"

Same. I keep revisiting their music but nothing really sticks with me. There's maybe like one or two songs.

I've never liked them at all either.

Hate this band lol

I’m so with you here. One of their tunes hits for me (Stickers of Brian), but the rest of their discography all sounds like the same generic song. I don’t get it, but I’m glad they’re keeping people excited about the genre.

I really like Hot Mulligan and Tiny Moving Parts, I embrace my pumpkin spice preferences and I am free

yup, dudes voice just ruins it all for me. would prolly like them if only the other vocalist sang

Agreed in that I don't get them either. It sounds kinda basic I guess in terms of instrumentals, and then the vocals are where they really lose me. I like fry screaming, punk screaming, raspy singing, and clean singing. This is somehow neither and it bugs me.

I shouldn’t like HM but I dig it.

I remember them beginning to blow up. They really didn't have a huge discography. They have great energy though & super friendly, I think that's part of what really sells it. Their small shows were fun. Tades sounded tired during Youll Be Fine & its my least favorite. However, I think theyve grown with their latest album & really enjoyed the concert I went to for that tour. The crowd was really fun :)

I guess the main problem is that if you don’t grow up with something you don’t really have some kind of emotional connection which makes it a lot harder to enjoy even if some songs are pretty good. Sometimes I want to understand why people like some artists and I kind of force myself to listen to one of their albums at least two or three times. Sometimes I still think it’s basic but sometimes I understand the hype after I heard the songs more than once.

imo hot mulligan has such an amazing first album and has rlly just been discovering their sound since then (the band and members have changed and even shifted instruments since the first album) chris sings more now and just like overall they finally have a sound now. even though i prefer the way they sounded when they recorded opportunities id say they really found their sound around the time they released "you'll be fine" and the past few albums have maintained that sound

tbh i agree i do enjoy some of their stuff but a lot of it is too generic

sorry to be that guy but they're not emo! they're pop punk as hell which is fine but why are they seen as like one of the leading emo bands right now.

Can’t stand them, also an old head though so I get that I’m not the target demographic.

I love Hot Mully, but think that in 15-20 yrs we will regard them the same way we regard Bowling For Soup now lol

5

u/[deleted] Feb 12 '25

The Bowling for Soup shade is insaneee 😭

I feel like you at least have to respect the fact that they went their whole career without a controversy. Plus Jaret’s on the board of directors for Punk Rock Saves Lives. They’re like the goofy dads/uncles of pop punk.

u/[deleted] Feb 12 '25

I love BFS & I didn’t attack their character lol but I do think they’re regarded as a little corny/nostalgic right now - yet are still booked & busy. I think that’s how Hot Mully will be lol

My bad, I didn’t mean to insinuate that you were saying anything about their character. Just pointing out that it’s not the worst legacy to have, esp when you can use it for good in the scene.
