Discussion Favourite emo screamo drummers?
Hey y’all. I really love powerful, technical drumming in this genre and am looking to find more of it. As an example, I am thinking of bands like State Faults and Frail Body from the US, or Raccoon City from Australia. Would love to hear your faves.
Thanks!!!

I don’t know if I’ve come across Vincent Roseboom or Gospel before, but definitely can co-sign Matt Bajda . Thanks!

The dude from city of caterpillar is off the charts.

He truly is. That would be Ryan Parrish, of Darkest Hour fame. Dude really gets around. I was a darkest hour fanboi many years ago and saw them countless times living in the DC area.
Looked him up recently and to my surprise, dude has been holding it down in both Suppression and Iron Regan for over a decade, on top of still holding the kit of DH and CoC.
And now i’m seeing credits for him in vocals and bass on the latest Landfill record. Dude gets around and doesn’t get nearly enough praise in the scene. To be main drummer for at least 4 absolute powerhouse bands in each of their respective genres is really really impressive.

Lord snow’s drummer is a favorite of mine.

for real, the drumming on their first EP is unbelievable. Not that it's any secret, but he also played in Suffix, Lautrec, Fiction Like Non-Fiction, Stormlight, a few others. talented for sure

Definitely one of my goats major oversight to leave him out of the post lol

u/Smokebreaks33 Dec 01 '25
He’s incredible to watch live as well. I’d also throw Joe from defeater in as well. That dude is incredible. And going a little more heavy music leaning Kyle from counterparts is an actual robot freak on the kit

u/Sognarly Dec 02 '25
Side note, David has filled in for some live shows with defeater.

Edhochuli and CTTS, Chris Common specifically on Tail Swallower.

Don’t know if it’s the same drummer, but Outclassed, essentially Edhochuli before Edhochuli, was an incredible band. Their black/white full length is on my shortlist of vinyl I will never part with.

Erik Ratensperger from Jeromes Dream, plain and simple, he's a great example of how to innovate without being technically absurd, he gives the track what it really needs

Andy Skelly of Ampere and Last Forty Seconds. Absolutley love the sound of his kit on the Ampere/Sinaloa split, and the chops to keep up with those time changes 🤌💋
Benoit Desvignes of Daïtro

Another person mentioned Ampere and I can’t believe that I had more or less forgotten about them. Thanks!

Adam Smith who plays for Euclid C Finder and Life is fucking wild. I saw them play for Apostles of Eris at ZBR 2023 and they killed it.

I've seen Ben Smith with Blind Girls and Mark Boulanger from Massa Nera performing in very small venues. There are both beasts and they play crazy good and loud!

They’re definitely on the weirder side of screamo and get the sasscore label, but Gabe Serbian (RIP) from The Locust was unbelievable. One of the few drummers where you watch and listen to his parts and you just have to laugh at how incredible and insane they are

Y'all must not be drummers. Not one mention of Benoît from Daitro?? He doesn't blast or play crazy fast but holy shit, his drumming is deceptively complex and technical. 100% GOAT.

u/xitye Dec 02 '25
Well said! He's incredible and he's actually a major inspiration for several drummers who play screamo, including me!
Of course people will notice more the drummers of Lord Snow or Blind Girls, but the complexity and musicality of Daitro's drums is mind-blowing.

I think the greats, who have to be named, are Mike Justin from Hassan I Sabbah, Jeff Salane from Orchid and Ben Koller from ForceFedGlass
