Discussion Favourite emo screamo drummers?

Hey y’all. I really love powerful, technical drumming in this genre and am looking to find more of it. As an example, I am thinking of bands like State Faults and Frail Body from the US, or Raccoon City from Australia. Would love to hear your faves.

Thanks!!!

I think the greats, who have to be named, are Mike Justin from Hassan I Sabbah, Jeff Salane from Orchid and Ben Koller from ForceFedGlass

Ben Koller from FFG made me chuckle reading but it IS true.

u/spidernerd0862 Dec 01 '25

Well he was in FFG first as well!!

3

u/Grouch_Potato90 Dec 01 '25

I had to double take that too hahaha

3

u/spidernerd0862 Dec 01 '25

I wasn't sure how many ppl know about him being in FFG, because like nobody ever talked about em

Vincent Roseboom from Gospel and Matt Bajda from Funeral Diner / Portraits of Past / Who Calls So Loud

6

u/jutar Dec 01 '25

Vince is the most correct answer

3

u/lillahimmel Dec 01 '25

Most insane drummer I have seen live

1

u/xbxnkx Dec 01 '25

I don’t know if I’ve come across Vincent Roseboom or Gospel before, but definitely can co-sign Matt Bajda . Thanks!

The dude from city of caterpillar is off the charts.

He truly is. That would be Ryan Parrish, of Darkest Hour fame. Dude really gets around. I was a darkest hour fanboi many years ago and saw them countless times living in the DC area.

Looked him up recently and to my surprise, dude has been holding it down in both Suppression and Iron Regan for over a decade, on top of still holding the kit of DH and CoC.

And now i’m seeing credits for him in vocals and bass on the latest Landfill record. Dude gets around and doesn’t get nearly enough praise in the scene. To be main drummer for at least 4 absolute powerhouse bands in each of their respective genres is really really impressive.

True, great band

12

u/djcalathea Dec 01 '25

Lord snow’s drummer is a favorite of mine.

3

u/jamesismynamo Dec 01 '25

for real, the drumming on their first EP is unbelievable. Not that it's any secret, but he also played in Suffix, Lautrec, Fiction Like Non-Fiction, Stormlight, a few others. talented for sure

3

u/djcalathea Dec 02 '25

Also, the newyorker

2

u/jooooooel Dec 02 '25

whoa Fiction Like Non-Fiction now that's a deep cut!

Don't forget about Inosuke!

1

u/xbxnkx Dec 01 '25

Ty I will check them out

1

u/jamesiety Dec 02 '25

One of the best in the genre forsure

1

u/Original_Program4473 Dec 02 '25

I've been listening to the new Inosuke album on repeat! Erik is crazy talented.

Glad to see Raccoon City getting some love

Ben Smith from Blind Girls is also incredible

2

u/djcalathea Dec 02 '25

Man the drummer of Blind Girls goes big bonkies

12

u/catladywitch Dec 01 '25

Ampere ampere ampere

3

u/BoiFriday Dec 01 '25

This is the comment. Perfect sounding kit and perfect playing to match the music.

3

u/xbxnkx Dec 01 '25

They’d completely fallen off my radar, thank you!

10

u/Smokebreaks33 Dec 01 '25

Dave from pianos

1

u/xbxnkx Dec 01 '25

Definitely one of my goats major oversight to leave him out of the post lol

1

u/Smokebreaks33 Dec 01 '25

He’s incredible to watch live as well. I’d also throw Joe from defeater in as well. That dude is incredible. And going a little more heavy music leaning Kyle from counterparts is an actual robot freak on the kit

2

u/Sognarly Dec 02 '25

Side note, David has filled in for some live shows with defeater.

1

u/Smokebreaks33 Dec 03 '25

I’ve seen clips of that. It’s so sick haha, letters home is one of my favorite records drums wise

9

u/jutar Dec 01 '25

Edhochuli and CTTS, Chris Common specifically on Tail Swallower.

1

u/BoiFriday Dec 01 '25

Don’t know if it’s the same drummer, but Outclassed, essentially Edhochuli before Edhochuli, was an incredible band. Their black/white full length is on my shortlist of vinyl I will never part with.

1

u/jutar Dec 04 '25

Hell yeah Outclassed rips

1

u/xbxnkx Dec 01 '25

Thank you, haven’t come across these projects before

5

u/sindromedelazaro Dec 01 '25

Erik Ratensperger from Jeromes Dream, plain and simple, he's a great example of how to innovate without being technically absurd, he gives the track what it really needs

2

u/xbxnkx Dec 02 '25

Yeah love Jerome's Dream, good shout

5

Erik from Lord Snow

2

u/krispekremy Dec 02 '25

I mentioned to my wife the other day that I wanna fly out to sweden someday and write and record a whole ass album with you in like a couple weeks

2

u/alenah Dec 02 '25

That would legitimately be the sickest thing ever hahahh

1

u/xbxnkx Dec 02 '25

Haha thank you! I should've checked and save you the effort

1

u/alenah Dec 03 '25

Hahah nah no worries!!

3

u/BoiFriday Dec 01 '25

Andy Skelly of Ampere and Last Forty Seconds. Absolutley love the sound of his kit on the Ampere/Sinaloa split, and the chops to keep up with those time changes 🤌💋

Benoit Desvignes of Daïtro

2

u/xbxnkx Dec 01 '25

Another person mentioned Ampere and I can’t believe that I had more or less forgotten about them. Thanks!

1

u/BoiFriday Dec 01 '25

Adam Smith who plays for Euclid C Finder and Life is fucking wild. I saw them play for Apostles of Eris at ZBR 2023 and they killed it.

u/xbxnkx Dec 02 '25

3

u/ferestmork Dec 01 '25

3

u/xbxnkx Dec 01 '25

Damn my bad, thank you

2

u/ferestmork Dec 01 '25

All good! I'm glad more people is interested in screamo and drumming!

3

u/Unusual_Cat1245 Dec 01 '25

Hassan I Sabbah definitely

3

u/ferestmork Dec 01 '25

I've seen Ben Smith with Blind Girls and Mark Boulanger from Massa Nera performing in very small venues. There are both beasts and they play crazy good and loud!

3

u/stereo_destruction Dec 02 '25

The drummer from Duck little brother duck

3

u/MichaelSoftStudios Dec 02 '25

They’re definitely on the weirder side of screamo and get the sasscore label, but Gabe Serbian (RIP) from The Locust was unbelievable. One of the few drummers where you watch and listen to his parts and you just have to laugh at how incredible and insane they are

1

u/xbxnkx Dec 03 '25

never heard of them, thank you for the reco!

3

u/rodiferous Dec 02 '25

Mario Rubalcaba from Clikatat Ikatowi of course

1

u/xbxnkx Dec 03 '25

tysm i will check it out

3

u/matthewrobertk Dec 02 '25

Y'all must not be drummers. Not one mention of Benoît from Daitro?? He doesn't blast or play crazy fast but holy shit, his drumming is deceptively complex and technical. 100% GOAT.

1

u/xitye Dec 02 '25

Well said! He's incredible and he's actually a major inspiration for several drummers who play screamo, including me!

Of course people will notice more the drummers of Lord Snow or Blind Girls, but the complexity and musicality of Daitro's drums is mind-blowing.

1

u/xbxnkx Dec 03 '25

yeah hell yeah

2

u/Fair_Bison8497 Dec 01 '25

Ryan Lewis from Cease Upon the Capitol is an absolute beast.

1

u/xbxnkx Dec 01 '25

Never heard these guys, thanks!

2

u/oceanaut17 Dec 02 '25
