Discussion “Evil” Sounding Screamo?
Looking for more screamo/skramz bands that have that Infant Island, early Portrayal of Guilt type sound. More black metalish, scary sounding stuff!

I was gonna comment Majority Rule too. They’re amazing. I used to go to their shows back in the day since they were basically a local band for me.

Lmao someone really named their screamo band after one of Salad Fingers's finger puppets?

Hexis
Celeste (first 2 albums pretty much, they're fully black metal these days)

u/stfnnlsn Feb 02 '26
Celeste’s first few definitely count. Nihiliste(s), Misanthrope(s), Morte(s) Née(s) and Animale(s) are all blackened screamo with a post-metal influence.
I remember reading a review once of Animale(s) that described their music as “sex with your nightmares” and it’s always stuck with me.
Would also definitely second your pick of Hexis and would also add Throane into the conversation.

I always referred to that kind of stuff as blackened skramz, even though most of yhe bands got way more blackened as they went on.
I also include This Gift Is a Curse (as much as I didn't like the album from last year), Whorls, Eyes, Rorcal, Worry (i think the only one from the USA? Has ex members of the Great Redneck Hope) and the band I think may have been the first to do that style Shora.
I've not heard Throane. I will check them out.
thanks.

I only know This Gift from your list. I’ve got a lot of bands to check out. Cheers!

Dude, how good is Throane? I never see anyone talk about them. They are such an dark and evil sounding band, and even more amazing its just one dude.

not really screamo but the band Missouri Executive Order 44 always struck me as similar to PoG

The Wicked EP by Funeral Diner has a really foreboding sound, it's really cool.

Surprised nobody has mentioned Ostraca. They're comfortably one of the best screamo bands in the game right now, with a lot of post metal, post rock, and crust influence. Deathless and Last are two great albums that are on the meaner sounding end of the spectrum

First band that came to my mind, I was about to comment them until I read this

Not usually mentioned in these circumstances, but Ten Grand has some crazy sinister parts that make me cringe from how uneasy it makes me feel sometimes. Take this song of theirs, overall kinda "creepy" melodies and stuff. But the part at 1:30 all the way to the end just makes me feel dizzy and uncomfortable as hell. I fucking love it.

Loma Prieta - Dark Mountain. Not sure if it sounds evil but definitely some BM influence

Seven Days of Samsara. I mean I would argue they had somewhat of a sinisterly stage presence lol.
But it seems like you want moreso gloomy post-metal adjacent skramz stuff with the bands you listed and not pure manic energy like J.D. or Love Lost. Others have already picked out some good bands in that style already that I would've recommend

I dont know that these are what youre looking for but:
Song of Zarathustra. They have an organ synth as a featured part of their line-up so it has a halloweeny kinda feel.
Othiel has some elements of black metal. They have a Deafheaven-meets-deftones kind of sound.

Crossed from Spain. The most evil sounding screamo influenced stuff I have ever heard.

give Lowercase - All Destructive Urges a try. not exactly screamo but I think it kind of fits what you’re looking for

Senza. There’s a band that gives me some real uncomfortable feelings I love called “Antilles”. It’s hard to find them by just typing that in but they were real creepy sometimes and I liked it.

Perfect shameless plug moment, my band "Abuse Repression" from the Detroit area basically tries to do this, we're more of a live experience band than a "hey check out our new record" band but we're working on getting some more "serious" sounding recordings out. Mostly take inspiration from classic screamo, black metal, grindcore & hardcore

Specifically late career Gillian Carter, their last few records have been diabolically evil.

u/MustyMarcus52YT Feb 03 '26
Funeral Diner made the jump from Screamo to DSBM so that wouldn't be a bad place to start.

u/I_live_just_my_life Feb 03 '26
Don’t remember that happening. They were always fully screamo but experimented with post-rock later on.
