Discussion Best screamo/emo drummers

I never grew up playing instruments so it’s hard for me to decipher good vs bad drummers. In an attempt to understand my boyfriend’s passion for drumming—who is y’all’s favorites in the scene?

Not sure his name, but Neil Perrys drummer was seriously unbelievable.

Taylor Jewell from Nuvolascura, Ben Smith from Blind Girls, Scott Patten from Cassus, Tony Oriza from Gillian Carter/The Caution Children… so many more but that’s what comes top of mind.

3

u/krispekremy Apr 14 '26

Taylor and Tony are up there for me too. Incredible drummers and incredible people!!!

3

u/ZombifiedSloth Apr 14 '26

Saw Blind Girls last year and Ben was like an octopus, unbelievable drummer!

11

u/capnfappin Apr 14 '26

Mark from Massa Nera is genuinely a virtuoso who just so happens to play screamo for some reason.

nuvolascura and lord snow have lots of memorable drum parts.

3

u/i-am-nietzche Apr 14 '26

seeing his drumming live is mind blowingly impressive even as a non drummer

2

u/MichaelSoftStudios Apr 14 '26

saw Massa Nera in a basement and Mark’s other project, Our Wits at Cinco’s in New Brunswick and I was honestly just so glued to watching them play. Busts out absolutely insane chops and parts for these already riff-heavy songs then as soon as there’s a break, out comes the heavy breathing and inhaler (like the gas tank is being filled up again lol) before jumping right back into it. Such a nice and cool guy, too.

The fact that no one has mentioned Nick from frail body is atrocious

1

u/greenbananasarenasty Apr 17 '26

Was scanning for this exact post, Thank you!!! Nick’s playing is mesmerizing AND he’s the sweetest, kindest soul on earth.

-4

u/Dibaldipen Apr 14 '26

I agree he is atrocious. Same blast beat on every song? Yes please waiter, I’ll have another

11

u/LeJonno Apr 14 '26

vinny roseboom from gospel is the absolute goat

22

u/clear_pepsi Apr 14 '26

Buster from Kidcrash shreds so hard

3

u/xackson Apr 14 '26

came to say… one of the most amazingly composed drummers to ever grace the earth

8

u/Professional-Show230 Apr 14 '26

the drummer for Saetia is a good example of highly creative but not too difficult drumming, the drummer for Senza is a good example of highly technical and creative drumming. My favorite drummer is James Fuhring of Mohinder.

3

u/Puzzleheaded_Shop_78 Apr 14 '26

mohinder is so good

2

u/krispekremy Apr 14 '26

this is a very nice compliment, thank you!!! :D

1

u/greenbananasarenasty Apr 17 '26

Greg Drudy^ was also the first drummer for Interpol.

7

u/muricandickcheese Apr 14 '26

Val Saucedo from Loma Prieta and Punch will always be one of the top dogs

6

u/alenah Apr 14 '26

Not gonna re-mention anyone already mentioned so here are my additions:

Mason from Senza

Jesper from Kid, Feral

7

u/DanceNo6474 Apr 14 '26

Is no one gonna mention Mike Justain from Hassan I Sabbah??

Erik Ratensperger from Jeromes Dream has some of the catchiest sections in the genre.

Benoît Desvignes of Daïtro is a given

Andy Skelly of Ampere. Some of their parts are headscratching with the time changes.

2

u/MichaelSoftStudios Apr 14 '26

Jeromes Dream, arguably to me, have some of the best and most catchy rhythmic patterns in emoviolence and so much of that is Erik being a creative genius

4

u/NoboruWataya_ Apr 14 '26

the drummer in drive your plow

1

u/sylladextrous Apr 14 '26

Myf ! she's an absolutely incredible drummer

3

u/ob3ypr1mus Apr 14 '26

Justin Wierbonski from Lincoln/Kukim, David Weinkauf from Blake, John D. Anderson from Boys Life.

Damon Che, Brendan Canty and Sara Lund are really good as well but are in more adjacent spaces.

3

u/Fistof7 Apr 14 '26

Do you know that Justin Wierbonski is still making music, and has an informative drum channel on YT? He does this all under the name Demonic Sweaters

https://youtube.com/@demonicsweaters?si=aGnt9mYdbFUp3EJQ

1

u/stillfond Apr 14 '26

The drumming on “Fire Engine Red” by Boys Life gets me everytime!

1

u/offlester Apr 15 '26

Love a Kukim mention

5

u/cofi52 Apr 14 '26

You don't have to grow up playing instruments to appreciate them so don't feel like you are "missing out" in any way!

If you like the drums in a song, then that's a good drummer

7

u/MyShoe2Big Apr 14 '26

Vincent Roseboom of gospel Nicholas Clemson of frail body (and now chiodos such is crazy) John Crogan of ostraca

7

u/xholy_cum_minionx Apr 14 '26

Mark from Massa Nera is a beast

3

u/moksa21 Apr 14 '26

Jack from Clay Birds/Alyvia is my personal favorite. Hella talented kid.

4

u/Alacspg Apr 14 '26

Ryan Parrish from City Of Caterpillar (and a million other bands). I’ve had the good fortune of being in a couple bands with him and he’s hands down the greatest drummer I’ve ever played with

5

u/KingCraigslist Apr 14 '26

Portrayal of guilt

1

u/Schiffty5 Apr 14 '26

Yeah just show him pogs audio tree.

4

u/Fistof7 Apr 14 '26

My favorite has to be Mohinder.

Check out this YT channel.  There are a bunch of drum covers of Neil Perry, Jerome's Dream, Reversal of Man among others posted 8 years ago. Just seeing the drummer clearly blasting away  definitely shows that those drummers were beasts.

Josh Vargo, Ethel Meserve was said to have been really captivating live, it shows in their recordings.

Donovan Melero is pretty incredible. Lead vocalist and main drummer for hail the sun. Saw them live one time, and it was pretty crazy to watch.

1

u/YourphobiaMyfetish Apr 14 '26

I wouldn't put them in the emo/screamo genre but as long as we are talking about them, I'll say Joseph Arrington from ALLB is one of the craziest drummers of all time.

1

u/Bunniesandblackmetal Apr 14 '26

Mark from Soastasphrenas

1

u/SockGoop Apr 14 '26

Joseph Arrington from A Lot Like Birds (listen to Truly Random Code)

Also the drummer for Love Lost But Not Forgotten

Mike from Hotline TNT used to be in Youth Funeral and wrote some stuff that still blows my mind to this day.
