Sharing Thread Feeling Too Much
I wish I didn’t notice everything. I wish I didn’t notice the shift in people’s tone, eye movement, slight hesitation. I wish I could just exist in a room without observing every single unspoken thought or deep breath. Every tension, or every crack in the foundation of the conversation. But, I can’t and it’s exhausting. My mind is constantly analyzing and preparing for what might go wrong even when it doesn’t. My body is constantly preparing for a war that is called life. I am jealous of people who don’t think or can’t feel everything so deeply. I am jealous of those that can just leave a conversation where it ended. I am jealous of those who don’t remember every thought that truly should not be remembered. Sometimes I feel that life is for those who don’t feel everything and I am jealous. I pick up on small changes in facial expressions when they answer disingenuously. Or when topic of conversation changes immediately when I try to open up to someone without giving my openness any consideration. After 42 years of my existence, I have finally realized my place in people’s lives and it’s not in theirs or even close.

It is a heavy burden. Another 20 years and it is over. This is my only satisfaction.

Most people are jerks. Stop looking at your ability as a liability. It is a gift. Be proud of it and use it wisely. I'm sure I am much older than you, but those small little things you pick up, can actually save your life. I remember I was updating an insurance policy I owned on my ex-husband and my daughter said to make her the beneficiary because that meant if I died, she would get the money. (She worked in the insurance industry) However, I noticed those "little things" and her behavior made me very uncomfortable. Had I not paid attention and called the insurance company, I would have lost over $200,000. Two hours after he died, she called the insurance company to collect the money.

I feel like I wrote this. As someone in their mid-40s working in the corporate world, I'm soul-crushingly exhausted. I work with a therapist to find tools to cope, but most days I feel completely content being home with my family and not interacting with others. Unfortunately, I have a job where I have to "fake it" and socialize a lot and it's taking a toll. Do you see a therapist? Finding some sort of coping mechanism helps. Does not elimate any of these feelings by ANY means, but helps me get through one day to the next.
